Strange appointment with GP - should I have said I'm pregnant (again)?

I had a GP appointment today for a UTI, I'm 36 weeks pregnant (so I'm very pregnant). I was asked to provide a urine sample on arrival. I said to the GP that I'm 36 weeks pregnant and I also said that my midwife had tested my urine and said there are nitrates and protein in there and that she had sent me to them for antibiotics. Then the GP asked for my symptoms and I told her. She then asked me to get on the scales, which I did and it said I'm 70.2kg, which she calculated as a BMI of 28 and told me my BMI is overweight. She then asked to measure my waist, which I said ok to, and it was 99cm. She told me my height to waist ratio was very high (my waist is just under 2/3 of my height) and that I should "work on that", recommending that I try to go for a daily walk and work on my diet to improve it - and that it might ease my symptoms. She then said to wait for the urine sample results and I'd get a phone call if I need antibiotics.

I feel a bit confused. I'm very clearly heavily pregnant so surely the whole issue of having a skewed height to waist ratio isn't a problem? Or am I missing something? Should I have reiterated that I'm pregnant? I didn't want to sound like an idiot...it was really obvious that I'm pregnant - she literally was measuring my waist so can't have missed my bump! Should I be trying to lose weight?

Haha!! You are not being unreasonable, she sounds insane 😂 pay no notice OP. Or better still, go back in 4 weeks time and amaze her with your miraculous weight loss 😆 Hope you’re feeling better soon.

Scaredycat259 · 30/06/2022 19:48

I'm 36 weeks tomorrow too, my weight on Mondays midwife appointment was roughly the same as you and BMI , midwife said right where I should be, your doctor clearly needs to go to specsavers if they didn't notice your bump 😅.

PinkiOcelot · 30/06/2022 19:51

That sounds absolutely ridiculous. At that stage in pregnancy you haven’t got a waist! And you’re hardly overweight. You’re pregnant!

Hugasauras · 30/06/2022 19:53

She told me my height to waist ratio was very high

No shit, Sherlock!!Confused How very weird.

Schoolchoicesucks · 30/06/2022 19:57

That's hilarious! Maybe she didn't hear you say about the pregnancy? Very odd if she did, especially to take a waist measurement.

This was my thought when I was in there so I was debating pointing out that I'm pregnant but (because it's bloody obvious that I'm pregnant) I then thought there's absolutely no way in hell she'd not have noticed that (especially because she literally measured my waist).

What a loon! Ignore with impunity.

FruitToast · 30/06/2022 20:04

How odd! At 36 weeks pregnant that UTI probably needs treating before the 5 days it takes to do a urine culture so I'd contact someone and explain the rather bizarre situation.

NoSquirrels · 30/06/2022 20:04

Actually, I think I’d call back and ask for a phone call with the same GP. It sounds like they didn’t listen to anything you said at all - the midwife has already analysed your urine.

Call your midwife and tell her the GP was really weird.

NoSquirrels · 30/06/2022 20:06

X-posted with Fruit. Tell the midwife, and call the GP again. They’re not giving you correct treatment.

5zeds · 30/06/2022 20:08

I’d go as far as today are you SURE that was the GP?

The only other explanation is she’s having some sort of breakdown.

phone midwife for support.

TheHorrorOfIt · 30/06/2022 20:08

Wouldn’t it be on your GP notes that you are pregnant? I imagined a big banner saying “baby on board” flashing across the screen, or similar!

This is kind of the problem. The midwife tested my urine during my appointment on Sunday and told me that either I needed to go to the hospital that day to get antibiotics or go to my GP on Monday - I opted for the GP on Monday. Then the GP said I needed an appointment and a test so needed to book through the online booking system, and they didn't get back to me until this morning. So, it's already been five days since the midwife did the test (and I'm pretty sure I had a UTI before then because there was protein in my urine a few weeks ago and I've had symptoms since then too).

UTI can cause premature Labour in pregnancy. Please don’t let the antibiotics wait - happened to a friend.

Dancingwithhyenas · 30/06/2022 20:08

I would complain. That’s beyond weird.

Surely!

That's mental and you should have been given antibiotics immediately as you're pregnant.
I am a GP nurse and I can't imagine any of my GPs being this dumb (okay maybe one actually...) I can only guess they forgot you were pregnant but surely the bump would be a giveaway!

Thethreecs · 30/06/2022 20:10

Very strange, she obviously wasn't listening. I would however ring back straight away as it's very important that if it is a uti it's treated immediately. I don't understand how she didn't spot you are pregnant, is your bump small?

NineToFiveish · 30/06/2022 20:11

I would get to a hospital then, op. This is taking too long for your distinctly unobservant GP to sort out.

SmileyPiuPiu · 30/06/2022 20:11

Can you get to the hospital now?

Guidelines are to give antibiotics immediately while waiting for results of the urine test, in pregnant women.

SouthOfFrance · 30/06/2022 20:12

So weird.

What are you going to do now?

Apparently it's not small enough... I should get walking and hit the salad apparently.

Not easily. Do you think that's necessary?

OP posts:
SausageinaBun · 30/06/2022 20:13

I think you need to bypass the GP and go to the hospital as offered by your midwife.

I'd also try to speak to the practice manager about the weird GP appointment.
