Strange appointment with GP - should I have said I'm pregnant (again)?

I had a GP appointment today for a UTI, I'm 36 weeks pregnant (so I'm very pregnant). I was asked to provide a urine sample on arrival. I said to the GP that I'm 36 weeks pregnant and I also said that my midwife had tested my urine and said there are nitrates and protein in there and that she had sent me to them for antibiotics. Then the GP asked for my symptoms and I told her. She then asked me to get on the scales, which I did and it said I'm 70.2kg, which she calculated as a BMI of 28 and told me my BMI is overweight. She then asked to measure my waist, which I said ok to, and it was 99cm. She told me my height to waist ratio was very high (my waist is just under 2/3 of my height) and that I should "work on that", recommending that I try to go for a daily walk and work on my diet to improve it - and that it might ease my symptoms. She then said to wait for the urine sample results and I'd get a phone call if I need antibiotics.

I feel a bit confused. I'm very clearly heavily pregnant so surely the whole issue of having a skewed height to waist ratio isn't a problem? Or am I missing something? Should I have reiterated that I'm pregnant? I didn't want to sound like an idiot...it was really obvious that I'm pregnant - she literally was measuring my waist so can't have missed my bump! Should I be trying to lose weight?

Your DH should surely realise that your immune system is suppressed given the fact you’re pregnant? So a bug or not, it’s irrelevant if he’s feeling fine. He’s not going to be one of those ones who is competitively tired after you’ve given birth is he? 🙄

sparepantsandtoothbrush · 30/06/2022 22:22

You had the choice of going to hospital Sunday or seeing the GP for antibiotics Monday. It's not almost Friday and you're finding it "bemusing" that you still don't have the antibiotics you clearly need?

And as for your DH, what a useless prat. You're carrying a baby and have been told you need antibiotics but he's telling you it's just the same big he's got?

MyneighbourisTotoro · 30/06/2022 22:22

OP you really need to phone 111 or go up to the hospital, take your midwife’s advice. You shouldn’t let a UTI stick around, it can cause serious issues if left untreated.

Blankel · 30/06/2022 22:23

Just in the midst of a massive row with DH about it. To his credit, he's usually very attentive, supportive, kind, considerate (etc etc etc) but if he decides something might be serious then he completely shuts down and insists everything is fine (he does this with his own health too).

He really needs to get over this before the tiny defenceless human enters the world, it’s just not ok. Contact 111 and see what they say, sounds like bypassing your crazy GP is the best bet to be honest.

Well, that's just the most stupid thing I'd ever heard.

The situaion you are in is dangerous for pregnant women. It is dangerous for your baby.

You walked out of the doctor's without speaking up and getting what you needed. You're just going to have to be assertive with your husband and go and get what you need now.

This is just bloody stupid.

SugarDatesandPistachios · 30/06/2022 22:26

Ring Out of Hours, they should be able to prescribe you appropriate antibiotics. We do not wait for cultures in a symptomatic pregnant woman in her third trimester.

PeopleRStrange · 30/06/2022 22:27

Please also report this to the practice manager when you have time. I had a similar strange encounter with a solicitor I had used several times previously for property. Poor woman wasn’t well 😢

Unwell heavily pregnant woman asking for help on a parenting site… yeah let’s repeatedly call her stupid, thatl help! 🙄

Regularsizedrudy · 30/06/2022 22:29

Omg I can’t believe what I’m reading! UTIs in pregnancy are really fucking dangerous! You don’t need your husbands permission to seek medical help! Surely you know what a UTI feels like vs a bug? You need antibiotics ASAP!!

Blankel · 30/06/2022 22:33

Phoned the maternity unit at the hospital - they said to take paracetamol.

I missed the part about the midwife saying you need to see your gp monday its thursday today why did you wait so long

Dishwashersaurous · 30/06/2022 22:33

Op..please just forget about the ridiculous GP situation, which was clearly something rather odd.

Please get yourself to an out of hours gp or to the hospital now, and get some antibiotics.

Just get in a taxi and go to get antibiotics. Now

Teaandcrumpets95 · 30/06/2022 22:33

What you do with your own health is your choice.

However, your baby has no choice. Your baby cannot advocate for themselves. They have you and only you to advocate for them.

Presumably, if you were holding your newborn right now and they had a fever, or were visibly unwell you would seek medical help for your vulnerable, defenceless child?

Don't let your baby down.

The GP wouldn't see me when I phoned on Monday and said I needed to go through the online booking form, which meant I didn't get an appointment until today.

I assume they can’t prescribe antibiotics though anyway? 111 is what that’s for OP, it can’t hurt to call.

Did you tell them you've already been told you need antibiotics or just tell them you weren't well? I find it hard to understand why they would tell you to take paracetamol instead of getting you the antibiotics they said you need

Dishwashersaurous · 30/06/2022 22:34

Did you tell the hospital that you have a suspected uti and that the midwife, nearly a week ago said you need antibiotics.

Please, you need to advocate for yourself.

He needs to grow the fuck up. Right now.

And you need to stop prioritising pandering to him and putting the health of your child first.

blugray · 30/06/2022 22:36

It’s a dumb thing to have a massive row with your partner about.

I think the GP was aware that you are pregnant but was just giving generic advice regarding BMI. Overweight women can become pregnant and would look larger than a slim woman who is pregnant eg larger physique elsewhere than the stomach/waist. I’m not saying you’re overweight, but there might have been something that concerned your GP about your weight/BMI/symptoms together regardless of your pregnancy.

Dishwashersaurous · 30/06/2022 22:37

Op you seem really passive. Please, please you need to push for yourself.

Every gp has emergency appointments. You needed to say that you are an emergency.

I completely understand that you don't want to make a fuss or be difficult. But sometimes we just need to be pushy.

Blankel · 30/06/2022 22:38

@sparepantsandtoothbrush @Dishwashersaurous I said everything I've said on here and they said that the test results aren't back so they won't prescribe antibiotics so to take paracetamol for the symptoms.

Will you have rows with him if your baby is ill and you want to see a doctor?

Hadituptoheremate · 30/06/2022 22:41

I’m a midwife and in my trust if there is anything in urine then it’s sent off to be tested (the same test your gp will have sent for) and the results will be put on your record and shared with the gp. Midwives can’t prescribe as you probably know - therefore, when you go to your gp they would have the results in front of them and be able to prescribe that day.
not only has this gp potentially made you feel shitty about your weight/measurements, she unnecessarily did those measurements in the first place! We do not weigh or measure women throughout stages of pregnancy aside from the first point of contact as it’s not a true BMI or reflection of your weight due to the 20lb of extra weight you’re carrying! I think I would try and get a telephone appointment and see if a different gp will prescribe over the phone if you explain that your midwife found nitrates and protein and if you have any symptoms, most will!
good luck with the delivery and enjoy your baby OP
