Strange appointment with GP - should I have said I'm pregnant (again)?

I had a GP appointment today for a UTI, I'm 36 weeks pregnant (so I'm very pregnant). I was asked to provide a urine sample on arrival. I said to the GP that I'm 36 weeks pregnant and I also said that my midwife had tested my urine and said there are nitrates and protein in there and that she had sent me to them for antibiotics. Then the GP asked for my symptoms and I told her. She then asked me to get on the scales, which I did and it said I'm 70.2kg, which she calculated as a BMI of 28 and told me my BMI is overweight. She then asked to measure my waist, which I said ok to, and it was 99cm. She told me my height to waist ratio was very high (my waist is just under 2/3 of my height) and that I should "work on that", recommending that I try to go for a daily walk and work on my diet to improve it - and that it might ease my symptoms. She then said to wait for the urine sample results and I'd get a phone call if I need antibiotics.

I feel a bit confused. I'm very clearly heavily pregnant so surely the whole issue of having a skewed height to waist ratio isn't a problem? Or am I missing something? Should I have reiterated that I'm pregnant? I didn't want to sound like an idiot...it was really obvious that I'm pregnant - she literally was measuring my waist so can't have missed my bump! Should I be trying to lose weight?

Goodness - OH, DEAR, BUT AND I AM NOT A DOCTOR BUT YOU COULD RULE OUT MY THEORY IS THAT YOU COULD HAVE "GESTATIONAL DIABETIES" AS IN MY 2ND PREGNANCY I PUT ON 4 STONES IN WEIGHT, baby worn was nearly 11 lbs in weight, SO THINK YOU SHOULD ASK FOR YOUR SUGAR LEVELS TO BE TESTED AS IF IT SUGAR DIABETIES THAT CAN BEGIN IN PREGNANCY THEN MAY OR MAY NOT CONTINUE AFTER HE BABY IS BORN (MINE DID) AS ITS A "condition" YOU CAN GET INFECTIONS AND ALSO THRUSH WHICH IS ANOTHER ISSUE. WORTH ASKING TO SEE ANOTHER DOCTOR THATS WHAT I WOULD DO OR ASK FOR AN APPOINTMENT WITH MIDWIFE WHO CAN DO FURTHER URINE + BLOOD TESTS.

Just came across this thread and think it’s totally appalling and people behaving at their worst. At best some of the responses on here are batshit, at worst unpleasant. Good luck with the rest of your pregnancy OP. Sorry you’ve had such a hard time on here but I’d recommend in the future never bothering to come on Mumsnet with an issue like this again. And frankly anything else for that matter.

During my first pregnancy I had a UTI at 13 weeks. I phoned my GP and they sent my prescription straight through to the pharmacy for my husband to pick up. They didn’t even expect me to leave the house.
I stayed in the bath all morning until the antibiotics started to kick in and my symptoms eased a bit.

The midwife wanted me to have the emergency appointment and I had the emergency appointment over the phone exactly like the midwife said I should. After that, I followed the advice given to me at that emergency appointment by a medical professional. I've followed the most recent medical advice at every stage.

Not sure if I'm missing something here, but you said that the midwife told you you need to go to the hospital or see your GP on Monday. But you didn't see your GP on Monday. I get it that that was because they wouldn't offer you an appointment that day, what I don't get is why you didn't then go to the hospital.

PoseyFlump · 02/07/2022 09:57

I think you've summed that up pretty well @AmaryIlis

Sometimes with the NHS you have to be proactive and chase things up yourself rather than sit and wait.

Joysutty · 02/07/2022 11:31

As when being pregnant they do say not to drink (meaning alcohol) as it gets through "apparently" to the unborn baby? The same "could" apply when taking any antibiotics - so they will no doubt have been "careful" which ones to have given you. Maybe that was the reason/issue on the weighing/BMI was to get the correct strength/dosage ? Who knows - Is just a thought. But, Maybe this GP could have explained in depth further and given you the reasons on why she was doing stuff all the way through the consultation/appointment.

Policy obviously varies massively between different GP practices. I had a UTI last year and was prescribed antibiotics without giving a sample or even speaking to a GP. The receptionist asked for my symptoms and immediately notified the local pharmacist to give me antibiotics!

maryleboneym · 02/07/2022 12:56

I wonder if uou should complain?

thats worrying isnt it? It’s the GP who needs medical assistance surely

utterly insane

ellyeth · 02/07/2022 17:43

It seems odd that you have been told that antibiotics couldn't be prescribed anyway. As someone else said, surely there are antibiotics which can be taken during pregnancy? A UTI does not always clear up on its own. Paracetamol can help with discomfort and pain but it will not clear up an infection.

wentworthinmate · 03/07/2022 09:55

Contact your midwife and maybe the practice manager with this story. Just plain weirdness and that gp needs checking.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 03/07/2022 10:08

I think they're reluctant to prescribe antibiotics without confirming it's definitely a uti in pregnancy due to the risk of issues the antibiotics can cause.

My sil is pregnant and took antibiotics for a uti, she's been told she's at increased risk of step B and the baby has a kidney issue which they've linked to the antibiotics.

I can see why they'd want to wait for it to be confirmed as definitely a uti.

How are you feeling op?
