The Royal Family cost taxpayers £102.4million last year.

As the nation struggled in the cost of living crisis, spending on the royals rose £15million – 17%.

It is difficult to work out how much they bring in but they do bring money in

Not really a rock solid argument though is it?

the royal family c oh st a fraction of this I’d sooner stamp out the above 2 first

Why would it be either or? Do them all. The royals take benefit fraud into the stratosphere after all, so it's all the same issue really.

How do we know they bring money in. I think that's a myth peddled by them to justify their existence. I know that tourists visit royal palaces etc but they'd probably become even more popular if empty. The perfect example being the Palace of Versailles.

Tarasharp - Well they obviously do give pleasure to a lot of people. You only have to see the thousands who were outside Buckingham Palace and lining the mall during the Jubilee celebrations to realise that they are still popular. The same with royal weddings.

Obviously they are popular to certain people. But some people are happy just plodding along with the old familiar way, never stopping to think below the surface on how wrong it is. It's the familiarity and continuation that people seem to want. The royal family exploit it the the core. If an institution is corrupt it's wrong whether people like them or not.

Are you sure?
What options for you think we'd be likely to get?
Just look at the political has-beens who would likely be in the running...
No thanks!!

Well look at who's in the running within the royals. Would you vote for any of them if you had to? But they don't even have to try to win anyone over. They just had to be born.

. People think that's fair, and preferable to an elected democratic president? 😲

the NHS looses an estimated 5.7 billion due to fraud
benefit fraud cost an estimated 65.2 million

Did you find out how much was spent on security, blocking roads off etc? It really isn't a strong argument for having a monarchy.

Charles was campaigning for the environment before most mps had even heard of it.

Charles has to do something to justify his existence. He's hardly going to want to sit twiddling his thumbs all day. He could if he wanted though. Do want they want.

So we justify them because they cost less than the money lost through NHS and benefit fraud? What a strange comparison. Hmm.

How about comparing the cost of them to the cost of the Irish presidency. Two and a half times cheaper than our monarchy, much better value for money. The people of Ireland don't have to fork out for the security of a huge extended family, nor pay for the upkeep of umpteen castles and palaces. I envy their democracy.
