The Royal Family cost taxpayers £102.4million last year.

As the nation struggled in the cost of living crisis, spending on the royals rose £15million – 17%.

YANBU OP, but there are some right royal arselickers on here.

Buckingham Palace would be an ideal place to house Asylum Seekers with it's 775 rooms, rather than spending £millions flying the to Rwanda. It's got it's own gardens for them to get out and exercise in, plus it's under armed military guard 24 hours a day.

Yeah because that'll deter illegal immigrants & unsafe channel crossings & people trafficking won't it

🙄🙄🙄🙄

MintJulia · 30/06/2022 16:37

That's £1.50 each.

Given the diplomatic/tourist value I don't object at all.

Would you want Boris or Keri as President?

MintJulia · 30/06/2022 16:39

MaybeIWillFuckOffThen · 30/06/2022 14:05

And that’s not the real overriding benefit - they’re worth every penny because of two words - soft power

You name one single solitary thing the royals have done with their 'soft power' to the benefit of this country in the last 30 years. Anything.

Charles was campaigning for the environment before most mps had even heard of it.

TimeFlysWhenYoureHavingRum · 30/06/2022 16:42

Yanbu. The utter guff about them "bringing in more tourist money than they cost" will be wheeled out. Utter nonsense. Meanwhile Charls is accepting 3 million in cash (literally in suitcases) for uknown services rendered from a very questionable source.
They need to go.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 30/06/2022 16:43

For me, the most damaging aspect of having a royal family is that is is the ultimate example of breeding automatically making you more valuable or more worthy to lead, in some respect. I think the knock on from that is the nepotism we see right across our political landscape and the fact that the vast majority of those in power all went to the same school together and all are interconnected. It has led us to a place of intense corruption, back handers, dodgy deals and people with some big jobs they are not remotely qualified to do

Very well put - and the exact reason why for some of us it's about the principle rather than just the money

For those who prefer to focus on the £££ though, why are so many repeating "£102 million" as if that's the real cost? Have they not noticed that security's not included in that, or any number of other things?

OnaBegonia · 30/06/2022 16:54

That £102 million cost is a drop in the ocean to the billions of money that our Royal Family raise and attract into the country.
Utter nonsense, ppl don't come to see the Royal Family, they come to see the buildings, they would come whether they existed or not.
We should not be funding a billionaire who has 2 homes with nearly 1000 rooms between them, we are in an economic crisis and yet £millions can be found for
this nonsense.

queenmabb · 30/06/2022 16:55

Along with other powerful people they own this world and its people like a commodity. It isn't as simple as costing us money. They own this world and can't ousted with laws or protocols because they set and own them and live outside of them.

Getoutofthis · 30/06/2022 17:01

soundofsilver · 30/06/2022 11:57

Get rid. The argument that they bring in tourism is a load of rubbish. France brings in more tourists than the uk and what did they do to their royal family?!
Open up all their houses to the public for tourists.

I hear this a lot.
France is a stunningly beautiful country with the French Riviera, warm weather etc. We are not that. I know people who come to visit the UK specifically for the pomp but prefer to holiday in the med.
I visited London during the jubilee ( not on purpose) and it looked so regal and well done, I can see why people like to see that.

WishILivedInThrushGreen · 30/06/2022 17:09

I'd like to see the monarchy streamlined and minor royals pushed out of 'grace and favour' apartments in , now useless, properties like Kensington Palace and other lodges in Windsor ( like Andrew and his sycophantic ex wife.)

willithappen · 30/06/2022 16:21

Does anyone complaining about this actually understand the Sovereign Grant?
You do realise this money isn't coming out of your pocket right? It's literally money they bring in which is then handed back to them after the government take their cut.

The money they bring in suitcases?

You do realise it's the invertebrates known as the Royal Trustees who set the percentage of the SG. Boris is a royal trustee: that fact alone tells you there's absolutely nothing here to suggest a fair, transparent and equitable process in the wider interest of the British public.

And still the grasping f*ckers passively-aggressively complain (read the last paragraph):

Pretending to give with one hand while grabbing hard with the other. Cornish oysters & game shooting for starters.

WishILivedInThrushGreen · 30/06/2022 17:18

I remember ( hopefully someone else will too) when the Queen had to have chats with her mum about her mum's gross overspending. Not once, but a few times... all in the news.

I might be wrong, here, but I have vague memories of The Queen Mum's annual florists' bill being a six figure sum.
She insisted on them at both her Scottish castles , despite spending hardly anytime there.

Iflyaway · 30/06/2022 17:21

It’s £102 million that could be far more usefully spent on something else.

It's a disgrace when a footballer has to remind the country that children are living in poverty and not having enough to eat....

jcyclops · 30/06/2022 17:35

Of the £102m, £63.9m is for work on Buckingham Palace (which is owned by the country, not by the Royal Family). The 10 year project is expected to cost £369m.

By contrast the cheapest option for renovation of the Palace of Westminster that MPs are currently considering is around £10billion over 12 to 20 years, and the most expensive option is £22billion.

WishILivedInThrushGreen · 30/06/2022 17:52

@Iflyaway that reminds me , though, look at the eye-watering amounts that is paid to many footballers to kick a ball around .

Yet a junior barrister can earn but £12,500 pa.
A junior doctor can be on call for up to 90 hours per week.

Care workers can be made to feel guilty or threatened if they don't extend their hours to accommodate sickness/absence.

We need to think about our priorities.
I'm not sure that our country does.

entropynow · 30/06/2022 17:53

CounsellorTroi · 30/06/2022 11:41

There will be people along to argue that it’s only a few pence per head of the population but they are missing the point. It’s £102 million that could be far more usefully spent on something else.

Could be. Probably won't be

Puzzledandpissedoff · 30/06/2022 17:57

Charles was campaigning for the environment before most mps had even heard of it

Does that include pootling up to the Davos meeting in an electric car for the attention, having just flown there in a private jet?

Caring about the environment? Give me a break ...

Literally- the Queen owns the seabed. What a bizarre setup we have created for ourselves.

AllHailKingLouis · 30/06/2022 16:20

If there was a public vote, what do you reckon the outcome would be?

Keep the royals.

Execute the royals and everyone else being subsidize by the real taxpayers.
Fair's fair surely.

Pedallleur · 30/06/2022 20:45

Worth reading about the sovereign grant. It's a % handed back but look up golden ratchet. Means the grant never falls. Introduced in 2012. In fact the Queen has just got a 30 million pay rise apparently. If someone was to reveal the real wealth of the RF, property, land, investments, off shore accounts, jewellery, art etc I think there would outrage at the value. Won't happen though.

MissFancyDay · 30/06/2022 20:56

They give millions of people a massive amount of pleasure, my very elderly mother being one of them. But that would only probably be true of the oldest half of society, and their views don't count.

Their views don’t count? They gave us Brexit and continue to give us Tory governments. Their views are very well represented.

France gets more tourists because it has better weather. And better food
I never understand why posters keep mentioning Versailles, Buckingham Palace is in no way comparable as a tourist attraction.

AuxArmesCitoyens · 30/06/2022 21:18

Prince Charles is the biggest environmental hypocrite out there. He has a fleet of about 20 cars, gid knows how many homes and takes private jets everywhere.
