Does anyone else have an unpopular job?

And is just sick of the negativity towards it?
I've worked my way up to a decent position in a call Center dealing with home insurance (for a global company) and worked there for 15 plus years.
It's obviously not the most exciting job in the world and certainly isn't where I saw myself working when I was little, but hey ho, it suits my life!
We actually work extremely hard at our place. Dealing with all sorts of situations which can be triggering and unpleasant, dealing with all types of customers who can be verbally abusive.... more often then not!
Home insurance usually peaks in the winter, I've had my Christmas holidays cancelled and been under the most pressure around the holidays pretty much every year. It's hard, really really hard.
But when do you actually hear anyone say anything nice about us poor buggers answering the phones? Dealing with 20+ claims/customers every. Single. Day.
Heaven forbid you say something negative towards the NHS or a teacher on here (not that I do I will point out, but seen it time and time over) and the Mumsnet brigade comes out on full force. Why do people in these jobs only seem to get recognition for working hard?
I worked through the entire pandemic. Until all of our WFH equipment was set up (which took a while) we were going into office every single day with 200+ people... didn't matter whether you were vulnerable or not! Not a single hour was lost.

Anyway I am rambling. I just find the "free pass" for certain jobs tiring. Anyone else feel the same?

I feel for you, OP. There are silent heroes in the society that deserve as much respect as people in the NHS get. Bin men, people who maintain the sewers, police, supermarket workers - they work super hard to keep us going.

Skulldrudgery · 29/06/2022 20:27

Ha! I’m a dentist and people tell me they hate me every day!

Nidan2Sandan · 29/06/2022 20:28

I work in Social Housing dealing with ASB, to many on here I am the devil reincarnate and all Housing Associations are the route of evil.

GiltEdges · 29/06/2022 20:30

I mean I take your point OP, but teachers are far from loved on MN either.

Flyonthewall01 · 29/06/2022 20:31

I’m not really sure what you want from this post? Everyone who works, works hard. Why do we need recognition? I don’t work in a “recognised” role but I get paid well for doing it so don’t need people to clap me

eurochick · 29/06/2022 20:33

I'm a lawyer. Everybody hates us. Until they need us.

SparklyLeprechaun · 29/06/2022 20:35

I wouldn't say working in an insurance call centre is an unpopular job? I've always had good, pleasant interactions with my insurance company.

A really unpopular job would be working in a call centre making unsolicited calls. But they deserve every negativity thrown at them.

This, I have never seen so many teachers ripped to shreds before mumsnet.

I was just reading through my sons reading book this year and I remembered a post I made at the start of the school year, as a new reception mum I might add, where I asked if the teachers read the comments or not and I literally got eaten ALIVE because how could I even suggest a teacher read the reading book and how I greatful and entitled I was to even think they did that! Because they are busy enough and have enough to do.
I just think well trust me I work my absolute ARSE off every single day. I don't stop and rarely get as much as a thank you from anyone. Don't we all work hard 🤷🏼‍♀️

Hmmm I'm not exactly asking for an applause either just here for a chat!

Tbf a bad teacher can significantly impact a dc and whilst most are hard working and lovely there's a fair amount of knobheads who should get a different job.

Ahhh wel that's a nice comment, glad you feel that way ☺️ I once had to make a car insurance claim and they were soo lovely, it really made a difference!
But trust me... on the other side of the phone this is not normally the attitude! You have to have an extremely thick skin.

If I had a penny for the amount of times people say "insurance companies are only out to con people out of money" I would literally never need to work again, haha!

It's not an unpopular job but you feel unpopular because you take a lot of shit on a day to day basis. It's not like you're a traffic warden is it?!

I'd let it go OP. No point nursing a martyr complex.

People think my job is boring (accountant, it's not boring) I don't care what they think because I'm the one who has to do it and I feel pretty damp smug about having a well paid job with nice people at a good firm and lots of variety.

As long as you like your job its all good. If you don't find a way to make a change!

ZenNudist · 29/06/2022 20:40

Damn not damp!

Lulu1919 · 29/06/2022 20:41

I'm a TA not a valued job !!!

dudsville · 29/06/2022 20:43

I know nothing about your job OP, so your post was illuminating. I think the things about jobs is old fashioned hierarchy based on the difference between "The Professions" and "white collar", there are so many new jobs now.

janesmithsdog · 29/06/2022 20:45

YANBU. Teachers particularly seem to think they hold the fabric of society together more than the rest of us put together.

We all work hard, we all play our part in making the world go round and I have no time for one group trying to elevate themselves above the rest tbh.

TabithaTittlemouse · 29/06/2022 20:47

Teachers and NHS staff are seen as extremely negative on here (and real life).

I work with people who have done bad things (this is my sons description!). I don’t have to like what they’ve done but I will nurse them as I would anyone else. Everyone has a story.

TroysMammy · 29/06/2022 20:50

GP Receptionist. No other words needed.

Satsumaonaplate · 29/06/2022 20:50

Yes, as I work in the oil industry...

I don't think anyone working hard in whatever sector deserves "every negativity thrown at them".

The cold calling sector itself is horrid but taking a job in that sector doesn't define a person.

Sorry you feel so invisible OP. But rest assured that to some people- possibly 20 a day by the sounds of it!! - you're 'the lady' who listened, 'the lady' who helped, 'the lady' who explained. I think it's amazing that in all kinds of jobs in all kinds of places we all impact on each other, hopefully mostly positively!

frenchie4002 · 29/06/2022 20:55

Most people have hard things to deal with at work.

DorritLittle · 29/06/2022 20:56

I hear you. I work for the council so I am personally responsible for all manner of incomprehensible decisions and annoyances.

ItWasntMyFault · 29/06/2022 20:59

Rent Officer for a HA doesn't exactly make me popular.

Lacey247 · 29/06/2022 21:01

I’m a social worker. Not a career which is ever really respected or praised. I too work extremely hard and I feel that if people knew the work we did and how positive it actually is then their attitude towards us would change. I would in adult mental health rather than child protection. I think child protection social workers probably have an even harder time of it
