To wonder what we do now that will be frowned upon in 30-40 years time

This video is a prime example of how attitudes change. It seems we go just go from stupid to stupid all the time.

digg.com/video/this-1967-british-news-report-that-interviewed-drunk-drivers-before-it-became-illegal-is-bonkers

Another example is passive smoking. Obviously stupid and horrible to think we just smoked freely inside, thinking it was fine to breathe in smoke.

Fossil fueled cars will likely be the next as will idling cars outside of schools but I wonder what else we'll be scratching our heads over in future.

Telling people, especially children that you can change sex, and giving them “affirmative” care. Calling men women, even when they have been convicted of rape.

Cornettoninja · 29/06/2022 10:04

I think PPs foretelling the downfall of consumerism, binge drinking, children on the internet and processed food are going to be disappointed!

I agree, particularly the things that have histories spanning centuries - alcohol, tattooing and ownership of assets appeal far too much to the basic human psyche to be shunned completely in the next forty years. They’ll change for sure but they’ll be about and acceptable.

coffeecupsandfairylights · 29/06/2022 07:58

I reckon one day we'll look at alcohol in the same way we've already started to look at smoking.

Agree with this

CoastalWave · 29/06/2022 10:05

Allowing your cat to just roam outside.

Killing animals for meat.

Mobile phones/microwaves/smart meters/ear buds etc etc

wellyelliebee · 29/06/2022 10:07

Lots of things which we already know in our hearts are wrong but don't want to give up (e.g. the convenience of plastic and cars).

balalake · 29/06/2022 10:07

A minority of people currently think Boris Johnson is a decent human being and should remain Prime Minister. In 30-40 years time none of them will admit to having thought this and will view his tenure in number 10 as almost a form of collective mental illness.

detectora · 29/06/2022 10:08

Alcohol
Social media
Addictive computer games for young children
Ultra processed foods
Meat
Everyone owning a car

Having hamsters and rabbits as pets in cages

Having pets at all (with the possible exception of cats, as they tend to "own" the human, rather than the other way round).

wellyelliebee · 29/06/2022 10:08

Antibiotics will be a massive one. In a few years people will be dying all the time due to antibiotic resistance and the younger generation will be livid that people wasted Antibiotics on minor infections that could have healed without them, but it's one of those things that will only become obvious to most people after it's already too late.

I think this applies to meat eating also. It's been a key aspect of human culture/celebrations since the dawn of time. Less consumption, better quality are all changes I can see, but not elimination.

Just came on to say exactly this!

Definitely not my intention. That video, if you watched it, was an eye opener.

There have been some great responses and totally agree with PP's mentioning social media, internet and kids exposure. But also some funny ones, which is what I was hoping for (some funny some serious).

When I was a kid, I remember being tossed into the back of a friend's car with no seatbelts and a seat squab that would come undone under hard braking. It was fun sliding off and being thrown into the front seats but am horrified by it now.

I had to laugh at a PP who said, "turning gardens into Love Island sets' 😂. We have friends that have done this and it looks great (if you're into that) but may well end up like watching old episodes of Changing Rooms!

I think health awareness will become better- less alcohol, healthy living and exercise will just be expected and future generations will be horrified by the culture of fast food, vaping and binge drinking. Mental health will be better supported.
Environmental issues will be better supported from the baseline- manufacturers and factories will carry more responsibility for ethical choices.
Homes will all have working from home spaces, and the thought of trekking to the office 5 days a week 9-5 will be a source of horrified humour.
In the next generation or two.

ArabeI · 29/06/2022 10:12

Oh and tatty hair extensions

I hope so! Though the similar Victorian hair pieces, used to add volume, etc, also received censure and criticism. I don't think we have much hope in 30-40 years.

Katya213 · 29/06/2022 10:13

There will be a jail sentence if you debate on certain subjects.

ArabeI · 29/06/2022 10:13

I'm also hoping a lot will be environmental. Eating less meat, etc

gluenotsoup · 29/06/2022 10:14

I also think we’ll look back at the trend for fillers, fake lips, lashes , nails and brows and wonder why.

palygold · 29/06/2022 10:15

'Stay at home mums' will be rare and the preserve of the wealthy. The moving over of everyone onto universal credit by 2024 will set the ball rolling on this.

HellonHeels · 29/06/2022 10:16

The way we treat animals

SexyLittleNosferatu · 29/06/2022 10:16

Well tattoos I don't get, but being fat shouldn't be glorified like it has been lately. Being fat and unable to do daily tasks is not good for your health, however anyone wants to dress it up. Even if you can move and exercise, it's still bad for your organs to have that much fat around them, they have to work harder to do their job and your joints will start becoming sore quicker than other people. It's not fat shaming, it's wanting people to be able to lead a long life and not die at 50

Utter rubbish. You don't believe that yourself! You don't care one fucking jot if Carol down the road is fat. You aren't thinking of her health and how patronising can you get. It is quite simply one of the few remaining acceptable things to insult people for.

Also, who is "glorifying" it? Do you mean fat people who are seen and heard and talk about being fat and want clothes to fit them and want to engage with society and love themselves and refuse to be shut down by thin people? Is that "glorifying" it? What you really mean is fat people should be ashamed like they used to be and I don't like it when they aren't.

There is also rapidly increasing evidence that actually being fat is NOT all that bad.

Putting photos and video of your children all over social media/insta mumming. I wonder if I’m future this will be seen as a huge invasion of privacy.

Fast fashion - hopefully!

Brexit - what a shit show that is.

Yes this! It won't be allowed as they're unable to consent.
