This video is a prime example of how attitudes change. It seems we go just go from stupid to stupid all the time.

digg.com/video/this-1967-british-news-report-that-interviewed-drunk-drivers-before-it-became-illegal-is-bonkers

Another example is passive smoking. Obviously stupid and horrible to think we just smoked freely inside, thinking it was fine to breathe in smoke.

Fossil fueled cars will likely be the next as will idling cars outside of schools but I wonder what else we'll be scratching our heads over in future.

I sincerely hope it will come to be seen as unaccetable that people were kept alive for years with no quality of life and poor care, rather than allowing them an earlier, peaceful and dignified death.

Yes this. Dignity and the choice.

Glitteratitar · 29/06/2022 10:23

I genuinely wonder if trans issues will be in that category. 40-50 years ago, civil rights for black people was a contentious issue and I do sometimes wonder if trans rights will be fully accepted and therefore our children and grandchildren will judge us for wanting to protect women’s spaces.

The way we treat animals

Definitely.

We're just finding out that animals are more sentient than we'd naively thought.

We humans are so arrogant that we try to base intelligence etc by our narrow standards but animals are clearly different. It'll be interesting how our understanding develops in the next few decades.

I think social media algorithms and use of behavioural psychology in digital media such as video games will be regulated in the same way chemically addictive substances are now.

palygold · 29/06/2022 10:25

I honestly think trans people will become more accepted by 40 years, not less.

FourTeaFallOut · 29/06/2022 10:26

Medicalising and mutilating children to conform with conservative notions of gender conformity.

Log burning stoves.

-water in single-use plastic bottles
-the amount of sugar we consume

Well tattoos I don't get, but being fat shouldn't be glorified like it has been lately. Being fat and unable to do daily tasks is not good for your health, however anyone wants to dress it up. Even if you can move and exercise, it's still bad for your organs to have that much fat around them, they have to work harder to do their job and your joints will start becoming sore quicker than other people. It's not fat shaming, it's wanting people to be able to lead a long life and not die at 50

Utter rubbish. You don't believe that yourself! You don't care one fucking jot if Carol down the road is fat. You aren't thinking of her health and how patronising can you get. It is quite simply one of the few remaining acceptable things to insult people for.

Also, who is "glorifying" it? Do you mean fat people who are seen and heard and talk about being fat and want clothes to fit them and want to engage with society and love themselves and refuse to be shut down by thin people? Is that "glorifying" it? What you really mean is fat people should be ashamed like they used to be and I don't like it when they aren't.

There is also rapidly increasing evidence that actually being fat is NOT all that bad.

I agree -
so called glorification of ‘fatness’ is unhelpful from a health perspective- clearly

however, being overweight should not mean someone’s self esteem should be annihilated by society judging them -

it’s really complex why there is a western world obesity crisis -
and the problem is societal - like smoking was for so long and requires societal response not blaming individuals

powershowerforanhour · 29/06/2022 10:28

That video! I hope the smug arrogant law student got nicked and couldn't wangle his way out of it.

I agree with a lot on this thread.

I think- horse racing (possibly even horse riding), motorbike road racing, boxing, rugby. Especially for under 18s. (I wonder if 18 will remain the age of majority?)

Definitely casual flying. I see more and more people realising that taking a plane is a very high-cost activity, in terms of emissions - so they don't stop flying altogether, but they do it more thoughtfully. Maybe only taking flights once every few years, or only flying when necessary, rather than hopping on and off planes as if they were buses.

Indeed. It seems like lots of businesses have rushed back to pre-covid ways. Even my employer who prides itself on being sustainable and responsible, only has target to reduce pre-covid flights by 30% I have already contacted the sustainable business team and said I think it should be a much higher decrease! Very few should actually be necessary.

Accepted as trans people, yes, and able to live their lives as they choose.

Not accepted as actually having changed sex however.

riesenrad · 29/06/2022 10:32

Along with height. You can do something about your weight, but you can't do anything about your height. I hope all the small men "jokes" go the way of the Ark.

ClaudineClare · 29/06/2022 10:34

Smacking children. Most people don't think it acceptable but it is still legal

It is illegal in Scotland and Wales.

Kris02 · 29/06/2022 10:35

Our disgusting treatment of animals. Hopefully we’ll have lab-grown meat in a few years.

People in the future will think of slaughterhouses in the same way we think of public hangings. Anyone who owns a dog knows perfectly well that animals suffer. And they know the horrors that go on in slaughterhouses. But so long as they can shovel meat into their fat, greedy faces they don’t care.

I don't know! I'm basing that on the attitudes of the younger generation I've encountered.

It is not a lack of understanding. We know how animals suffer. People just dont care as it will impact them to change their behaviour. How mcdonalds keeps pigs is sickening. Absolutely sickening.

Would be frowned upon? Why? I suspect it will become more common place

Thankfully some of the younger generation still understand that it's impossible to change sex.

Fraaahnces · 29/06/2022 10:42

Wine consumption, coffee wankery (especially at the expense of the environment), ridiculous $$$ food fads, ie cronuts…Etc.

wellyelliebee · 29/06/2022 10:44

Some people are just listing things their middle aged brain doesn't like and wants to go away. But if a current 12 year old thinks differently, then I'm afraid you're the dinosaur. Not all future change will be "good" from the point of view of a current 40 something, in the same way that some of our parents wouldn't like things we accept as totally normal.

SmallPrawnEnergy · 29/06/2022 10:45

waveyourpompoms · 29/06/2022 08:09

Nothing wrong with any of that.

If you don’t think single use plastics are a problem there’s no hope for you tbh. And looking at your follow up post in reply to a pp “banning everything as everything is offensive” backs that up too.

Popcorn77 · 29/06/2022 10:45

yellowsmileyface · 29/06/2022 09:32

I'm not so keen on the idea of future with no meat, alcohol, or sugar!

I can see it going that way though. I predict we'll get to a stage where healthy lifestyles are enforced in such a way that's really restrictive and basically takes away our freedom of choice.

But you feel that way because of social conditioning. Our kids (well ones I know) see their future without meat, sugar and alcohol and they don’t fear it nor think of it in the negative. I think we can probably have a better one without those things. Less of those things has definitely made huge improvements to my life.

By the time a current 12 year old (!) is old enough to effect change, they'll presumably have matured just a tad and will see the world slightly differently.
