To wonder what we do now that will be frowned upon in 30-40 years time

This video is a prime example of how attitudes change. It seems we go just go from stupid to stupid all the time.

digg.com/video/this-1967-british-news-report-that-interviewed-drunk-drivers-before-it-became-illegal-is-bonkers

Another example is passive smoking. Obviously stupid and horrible to think we just smoked freely inside, thinking it was fine to breathe in smoke.

Fossil fueled cars will likely be the next as will idling cars outside of schools but I wonder what else we'll be scratching our heads over in future.

I think it will be mostly environmental

  • car ownership
  • eating meat
  • flying
  • consumerism
But also alcohol and in particular drinking in front of DC will be frowned upon.

I hope porn and surrogacy, but I doubt it.

Kokapetl · 29/06/2022 09:46

Eating meat on a regular basis rather than just occasionally, especially red meat.

Eating ham and other food preserved with nitrates in particular and especially feeding it to children. I think people are starting to realise how bad this is (proven serious carcinogen). Having read up on this, I wince when schools and other parents feed ham to children.

Flying short haul when other options are available.

Smacking children. Most people don't think it acceptable but it is still legal.

Excessive packaging.

motogirl · 29/06/2022 09:48

I strongly doubt many of the things here will be frowned upon, except petrol cars but that's already in the pipeline (I still want to know how they intend imposing electric vehicles for the half of car owners including most of my large development of 10,000 houses that do not have anywhere to install a charging point due to covenants saying no power in the garages which are to the rear of our houses with coach houses above!)

There's nothing intrinsically wrong with any of those three things, it's only the implementation details that make them problematic.

People who want to ban things seem to have a huge lack of imagination.

It's like people assuming flying must be restricted, because it burns fossil fuels. A more logical solution is to continue flying, without burning fossil fuels. Which can be done with the planes currently in existence, it's just that the fuel might cost twice as much. (OK, so using fuel that cost say twice as much would restrict flying somewhat, by pricing out some flights, but only as an unfortunate economic side effect, not because of an arbitrary and illogical rule deliberately created by people without much thinking ability.)

I'm not sure I'm the one lacking in imagination to not see a problem with single use plastic, tbh.

Cyclebabble · 29/06/2022 09:49

I think it is up to us to control what the future looks like. Following last week's news in the US I am concerned that we might see a very different and quite hostile future where we move backwards. In 80 years a more authoritarian structure might look back on the "evils" of abortion, gay marriage and even inter-race marriage. You may say I am scaremongering, but I never thought I would see a day where abortion was illegal in nearly half of the US.

OPTIMUMMY · 29/06/2022 09:49
  • That women’s health was so poorly researched and funded.
  • That many women were denied adequate pain relief for labour etc.
  • That we used so many fossil fuels
  • That Britain left the EU, and that Boris Johnson remained in power for so long.
  • That humans completed lots of the jobs that robots will in the future.
  • That we would go into shops to buy things
  • That we worked so many hours yet weren’t all that productive.

There will be an expectation on older people to opt for euthanasia once they reach a certain age

I agree this will probably happen.

In developed countries, birth rates are low but population is rising because quite frankly, people live so long now. It's quite unsustainable. The focus continues to be on to try to lower the birth rate more and more in order to curb population growth because that's more palatable than telling people they are living too long. However eventually the population will be so old without enough young people to support it. Eventually euthanasia will be legalised and subtlety encouraged I think.

Voluntary euthenasia is a very slippery slope. There are some people whose lives are so tormented that they wish to die, but who makes the decision, and how long for the decision to be made on less compelling circumstances? A dangerous idea.

DeepSeededUrbanDecay · 29/06/2022 09:51

Eating meat hopefully. I can't believe we ignore their suffering now tbh.

Having hamsters and rabbits as pets in cages

My hamster actually goes back to his cage of his own volition after free roam :) I was once sitting with him in the reception and he disappeared and I was frantically nsearching for him and found he had found his way back to his cage in the study!

the standard advice for pet rabbits is free roam nowadays and bunny proofing your entire house. I do think the standard for hamster cages will be bigger..now it's 1m by 0.5 m, I think that will definitely increase. It's sad because Brexit meant a lot of the larger German cages can't be shipped to the UK now so people have to DIY. European hamsters are extinct in the wild for example so it's not all great for wild animals.

Exactly, it’s so silly. People need to chill the fuck out and stop being offended by everything and finding reasons to ban everything 🙄

What a totally odd pair of responses. The OP's example was drink driving and other people have cited things like smoking inside and single use plastics. Why the extreme reaction to examples of changes that have or will make a huge improvement to our lives?

Giggorata · 29/06/2022 09:53

Cinnabomb · 29/06/2022 09:27

PFAS and micro plastics. It’s actually terrifying what we have sleep walked into in terms of poisoning practically all life on earth, from micro plankton to elephants to humans.

This is the one I put at the top of the long list.

I'm not at all sure you undertsand what kinks are or much about human sexuality.

I understand plenty.
What a bizarre comment from you.

ivykaty44 · 29/06/2022 09:53

banning cars from cities

when you ban cars in cities, the flat smooth roads become clear for people with disabilities to use with various aids to get about. Mobility scooters, trikes, wheelchairs are hindered by car storage and use

its far better than with cars for access

Helium balloons. We will be horrified that we ever wasted a precious and limited natural resource for bloody balloon arches.

Yes, this! I forgot this one. If we want to have working hospital diagnostic equipment we really need to stop wasting helium. Once you read up on it, you realise that having such cheap helium balloons is shockingly bad.

Giving young children devices ( ie smart phones ) that have free range to the internet.

This will come to be seen as on a par with the abuse of children in institutions, eg the Magdelene laundries, only it's worse. it's the parents who are enabling it, at the same time bemoaning every problem it causes and expecting others, eg schools, to sort out their careless parenting.

Wood/fuel burning stoves.

Ablism

I agree in some respect. I have a highly efficient British made wood burning stove and we use local sorced hard wood. We live in a rural area with no mains gas and do not have central heating. This is so different from a trendy city house with a Chinese made stove burning anything for the aesthetics; they should be banned.

Another one I really hope for - the utter madness of the UK property system, with homes seen as a way of getting rich and pulling the 'ladder' up behind one. I hope future generations will be ashamed of the appalling tenancy laws and collective shaming of 'renters' and look on it the same way we look on Victorians sending children up chimneys.

What is your solution to this?

CoalCraft · 29/06/2022 10:01

I think eating meat will take a bit longer, maybe 60-80 years, but will get there.

Within the time frame specified -

  • non-electric cars
  • driving a car yourself outside of niche hobby settings
  • single-use plastic in a domestic setting (though it will remain in, e.g., medical settings)
  • maybe brachycephalic dogs?

I think PPs foretelling the downfall of consumerism, binge drinking, children on the internet and processed food are going to be disappointed!

onlywhenidream · 29/06/2022 10:01

Council housing - good quality homes with low rent and stable tenancy so that people have a real alternative

Ah silly me, this is just a thinly veiled "unpopular opinions" thread. I see we are already onto tattoos and fat people.

Well tattoos I don't get, but being fat shouldn't be glorified like it has been lately. Being fat and unable to do daily tasks is not good for your health, however anyone wants to dress it up. Even if you can move and exercise, it's still bad for your organs to have that much fat around them, they have to work harder to do their job and your joints will start becoming sore quicker than other people. It's not fat shaming, it's wanting people to be able to lead a long life and not die at 50.

PollyPatella8 · 29/06/2022 10:02

I agree with this!

this

and cars in cities will become more uncommon, some cities have banned cars successfully, to the point residents don’t want them to return

Some people dont want them to return.
Unfortunately, York have now made it impossible for people with a blue badge to visit. I can see more and more disabled people being pushed out of society

TheKeatingFive · 29/06/2022 10:03

Why would tattoos be frowned upon? That makes no sense to me.

Allowing minors unfettered access to the internet.

This! I really hope so, anyway.
