To wonder what we do now that will be frowned upon in 30-40 years time

This video is a prime example of how attitudes change. It seems we go just go from stupid to stupid all the time.

digg.com/video/this-1967-british-news-report-that-interviewed-drunk-drivers-before-it-became-illegal-is-bonkers

Another example is passive smoking. Obviously stupid and horrible to think we just smoked freely inside, thinking it was fine to breathe in smoke.

Fossil fueled cars will likely be the next as will idling cars outside of schools but I wonder what else we'll be scratching our heads over in future.

"The posh woman who ‘drove drunk all through Kenya’!"

Keeenya!

That a sleazy, corrupt, immoral prime minister was able to cling onto power despite breaking the law, lying in parliament and making the UK a laughing stock.

  • Pro-life vs Pro-choice and the belief by some that they can choose whether a woman carries a child or not
  • american gun control - school shootings in particular
  • Russia being allowed to do what they want
  • China - or just communism in general
  • gambling with almost no restrictions or responsibility

i think all of these things will be addressed (except gun laws in America because they’ll never get any legislation past) and in 40 years time people will look at this stuff and not understand why we allowed it.

oh and the kardashians and similar. That’ll be seen as ridiculous

Chemotherapy - it will be seen as an absolutely barbaric way of treating cancer. I've had chemo by the way, and I thank God it was available to me as an option, but I think in 40 years time it will barely be used.

Performing double mastectomies on young women who don't have cancer, aren't at high risk of cancer and haven't even reached their twenties.

Humans have been eating meat and animal products for millenia, so I highly doubt it will be 'frowned upon' in a few years time.

Bit of a contradiction in terms there, since real grass tends to lead to meat production, but I digress... Grin

People had no choice but to eat meat thousands of years ago, and the early evolution of humans meant that we were like savage animals. Fortunately many of us have evolved intellectually, developed a conscience and understanding and empathy for the animals suffering and the horrendous volume and loss of life.

I suspect animals, wild and domesticated, will be given far more rights. Trees will become heritage status etc. licenses for dogs, cats etc and caged animals banned. There is already progress and consensus in these areas already.

What an absolutely first world privileged luxury point of view. What do you mean 'thousands of years ago'?

There are many places on this planet where humans regularly consume animal products in order to thrive because they can't get quinoa, avocado and Marmite in Waitrose to fulfill their nutrient requirements. Are they 'savages' and not 'intellectually evolved?

The place where my own dad grew up regularly consumed animal products because there wasn't the abundance and variety of food that you clearly enjoy and thrive on.

Taking baths

beeeeeeeeeeeeeeee · 30/06/2022 19:30

Posted before I finished.
Bathing as water becomes a scare resource.
Washing your clothes, self cleaning for the future.
Food waste, on the scale we have today.
I also think there will be a backlash against all the lefty stuff . We're going back to traditional values and conservatism.

Having hamsters and rabbits as pets in cages

Rabbits need space, but hamsters are fine in large cages with things to do.

ThickCutSteakChips · 30/06/2022 19:35

Bottled water in countries where you can turn on several taps in your own home and have access to clean, fresh, safe water.

I cannot understand people who buy bottled water for at home use.

I think we’ll learn a lot about childhood emotional abuse/neglect in the next few decades and realise how rife it is.

Thanks for acknowledging this. The impact is deep and last a lifetime

User112 · 30/06/2022 19:36

I think we’ll be looked down for keeping animals in cages. It’s wrong on so many levels.

DyingForACuppa · 30/06/2022 19:40

I've long thought that we will look back at the huge numbers of car deaths/injuries of the current era in the same way we look back in horror at Victorian factories and mills (radium girls, cotton lung etc).

Documentaries without the informed consent of the participants ie when participants have consented, but without fully understanding how the TV company is going to portray them. Much as I like Louis Theroux I already feel uncomfortable about this and I think there'll be more awareness in future.
I remember seeing a documentary about 10 years ago featuring a couple having their children taken away from them. It showed them at their most vulnerable and they had learning difficulties so really couldn't have understood what they were letting themselves in for.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 30/06/2022 19:57

I think we will be a better, fairer and more equal society. Someone upthread said the opposite, but l think it’s about evolution, America had akways been full of right wing nut jobs, and the right wing world is pretty grim at the moment.

But the Millennials and Gen Z will be in charge. And they have grown up with equality.

l would also like to think that the age of consent has been raised to 18. To stop predators and the like.

I really hope cosmetic ‘enhancements’ will go… injecting/inserting poison/foreign bodies into your own healthy body in the name of beauty blows my mind (and looks pretty shit) The fact that people feel the need to do this to make themselves feel better doesn’t say good things about our society. I would like to live in a world where having crows feet wasn’t considered something to get rid of!

Why would it go?
We're more likely to have more of it.
You may not like the way you look, but it doesn't seem to be unhealthy.

Gwenhwyfar · 30/06/2022 20:07

"I can't think of anything 30-40 years ago that was absolutely fine then but entirely unacceptable now."

I was a child 30-40 years ago and the freedom we had then would be illegal neglect now.

"fireworks. I think we won’t be able to buy them for personal use. We will have to go to organised events where we will be having drone light shows."

I think this will happen in the next 5 years, fortunately. We'll still have them, but at organised events only.

"brexit. The youth of today will vote to rejoin the EU."

Yes. Might have to join the single market first.

Veganism, our bodies are not designed to not eat animal products (although we do eat too much meat as a society)

Yes, I also think we may see some health problems among the new generation of vegans and this may slow down the transition to vegetarianism for all that some people are predicting.
Also with the backlash against highly processed foods, people will realise how reliant the new-style vegan places are on porcessed foods and think twice about how healthy it is.
