To wonder what we do now that will be frowned upon in 30-40 years time

This video is a prime example of how attitudes change. It seems we go just go from stupid to stupid all the time.

digg.com/video/this-1967-british-news-report-that-interviewed-drunk-drivers-before-it-became-illegal-is-bonkers

Another example is passive smoking. Obviously stupid and horrible to think we just smoked freely inside, thinking it was fine to breathe in smoke.

Fossil fueled cars will likely be the next as will idling cars outside of schools but I wonder what else we'll be scratching our heads over in future.

That would be fun

I was vegan as a child around 35 years ago when the differences were very stark. One vegetarian cafe in the city centre only (and it was mocked by many for being new age/hippy). The large supermarket only stocked one brand and type of soya milk, and then only a few bottles. Anything else you'd need Holland and Barrett or a specialist shop.

So I think in another 30-40 years we might have fewer people eating meat, but I'd really be most interested in what will happen in another couple of hundred years or more. Sadly I'll never know.

Lunar27 · 30/06/2022 10:33

I don't think veganism is a trend. It's not huge but the shift has only really gained traction over the last few years and the old stereotypes are fading.

I'm not vegan but will happily eat vegan when out as it maintains demand and can be a great alternative.

My daughter is vegan so we tend to eat less meat as a result. I'm not sure if/when we'll give it up but surely reduced consumption helps in the meantime.

It's been shown that the environmental impact of rearing livestock is horrific so we do need to do something.

People had no choice but to eat meat thousands of years ago, and the early evolution of humans meant that we were like savage animals. Fortunately many of us have evolved intellectually, developed a conscience and understanding and empathy for the animals suffering and the horrendous volume and loss of life.

I suspect animals, wild and domesticated, will be given far more rights. Trees will become heritage status etc. licenses for dogs, cats etc and caged animals banned. There is already progress and consensus in these areas already.

Meat eating has long been at the centre of cultural celebrations across all kinds of cultures and historical periods. It's not just a question of 'no choice', eating meat has always been something human's valued.

The idea we'll have moved away from it on 40 years is absurd. I would hope to see less consumption, higher welfare standards and even lab grown stuff in that time however.

Nothing will be acceptable anymore. You are allowed no feelings, or it's emotional abuse or clinical depression or some other disorder. It will be a bit like in the film equilibrium. We all have to be the same and think the same, otherwise we are unacceptable to society. It will be fun !

Reactionary bollocks. The internet has made people more emotive than ever.

Sythetic meat is future, though probably not for a century or so. It won't be about morality, it'll be for basic sustainability.

I don't eat meat because I come from a non-meat eating culture and was reared on lentils instead, but I totally agree with your post. It's not that easy to give up meat if you are used to it from birth. And I don't think people can be guilted or shamed into it.

Facebook became really popular around 2007. I fully expect after 2025 lots of cases from 18 year olds who are suing their parents for sharing photos of them as children.

Absolutely poor kids and babies did they give their permission to be plastered all over FB
?

This!
Things happen that no one sees coming. No one on the morning of November 9th, 1989 knew the Berlin Wall would come down, leading to the end of the Cold War and the Soviet Union.
Who saw the internet coming and the extraordinary changes wrought by its arrival?
There will be some other left field happenings which aren’t predicted and change everything.

TheKeatingFive · 30/06/2022 07:56

Because its already started.

Cutting down, yes. Cutting out is not so common.

whenever people find out they are at pains to tell me how little meat they eat

I work in consumer research. The say/do gap here is massive. There's a huge amount of virtue signalling.

Probably true tho meat sales have fallen by 18% and bacon sales by 48% so cutting back a bit is making a massive difference

JuneJustRains · 30/06/2022 15:49

think the idea of gender will change such as we won’t have separate toilets for men and women.

God, I hope not, at least not till the Inaccurate Willied People have learnt to wipe up after themselves so that the Vaginaed People don't have to sit in it.

Or did you mean by 'idea of gender' one loo for the male-women and male-men, and one for the female-women and female-men, but with different names?

The bonkers house prices vs wages thing
Smoking, drinking, gambling
Owning dogs - the shit, the noise and disturbance to others, the vast number of animals that have to be killed to feed them
Most single use plastic, such as used for drinks, shampoo, shower gel (why the feck was that ever invented when soap is much better - oh yes, the enormous extra profits)
Using oil, solid fuel and gas to heat homes

The way we treat the trans community. They're treated in exactly the same way the gay community was 30 years ago. I hope in 30 years time we're much kinder to trans people.

KittenKong · 30/06/2022 17:17

That’s a load of rubbish. The gay community protested to get marriage rights - legal rights. no one was scared for their job/life to speak agains this.

Todays T (how exactly are we defining this group?) are going after rights that women have fought for.

LGB activists never attacked women. They never said lesbians were Nazis for not wanting to date maleborns. They never demanded that the word woman be deleted from healthcare literature and adverts (because they didn’t like it).

The activists bully and abuse - they threaten and shout down anyone who doesn’t completely parrot them. London is currently awash with trans and Pride V3 flags. Shops are swelling Anything you can imagine with a twee new pride flag on it - including the DSD inclusive circle (which people with DSD have begged them not to do).

so tell me again - what does this have to do with gay rights in the 80/90s?

What?! None comparable

LobeliaBaggins · 30/06/2022 17:29

Actually I think some of the rights that trans people enjoy today will be walked back. Already the tide is turning in women's sports. Next, women's spaces. As it should be.

Yes this is somewhat true, but you can’t change biology, so it’s likely some of the rights afforded Today will be refused tomorrow, particularly in the sporting arena, where a biological advantage may be seen as exactly that, a biological advantage, and an equal playing field critical. No sports person should want anything different.

CMZ2018 · 30/06/2022 18:53

Hopefully not pander to the weirdos, snowflakes and other odd balls that seems to be trying to tell people how to think

Surrogacy, ivf, puberty blockers for kids.

tiggergoesbounce · 30/06/2022 18:55

It will be seen as obscene that we allowed our youths such access to the internet and we neglected to protect them.

rachmultiplemum · 30/06/2022 18:57

Dear me.... some of you lot will believe anything that the media tells you.

Farming and eating meat isn't a big baddy. Many farms are carbon neutral and in fact companies in the cities are buying carbon credits from farmers.

Cities produce far more environmental damage then farms. Transport does. Fast fashion does. Flying on holiday does.

Honest do you lot seriously think that you can survive without farming?!!
