To dye my three year old DD's hair pink?

DD 3.5 and has been pleading for 'pink hair' since she saw her older half sibling (DSD) with a funky colour.

I don't see the harm in it and im thinking of doing it for her as a treat over the summer holidays when she isn't at nursery, not a permanent dye ofc but one of those wash out in 6-8 washes ones. She has brown hair so it's unlikely to stain as blonde would. It won't be too noticeable but should reflect the light in the sun nicely.

So WIBU? Would you judge?

Yes

What is the impression you'd get?

Yeah, do it, a wash-in wash-out one is fine. I've quite often seen young kids with dyed streaks or totally dyed hair over summer, I don't think it's that unusual.

oofmehip · 28/06/2022 22:24

Use hair chalk- no judgement from me 🤷🏻‍♀️

BeautifulDragon · 28/06/2022 22:24

I wouldn't do that to a 3yo. What's wrong with hair chalk?

Echobelly · 28/06/2022 22:24

The impression I'd get is that anyone who does that is quite a cool, fun parent, personally!

TeapotTitties · 28/06/2022 22:24

Yes

FirewomanSam · 28/06/2022 22:25

If her hair is brown you won’t get it to look ‘pink’ and it’s likely to leave a coppery tinge for ages afterwards even if it’s not a permanent dye. You’d be better off using hair mascara or clip-in extensions to give her a pink streak or two.

MrsPartridgeKleio · 28/06/2022 22:25

Meh, I let my seven year old bleach her hair blonde. She had been asking for blonde hair since she could talk. She's now 11 and rocking a gorgeous balayage look.

ColmanFlamingo · 28/06/2022 22:26

Hair chalk, then she can have a different colour every day if she likes.

MermaidSwimming · 28/06/2022 22:26

I would get hair chalk

MrsPartridgeKleio · 28/06/2022 22:26

Oh and it's been blue and purple during this time too!

hangrylady · 28/06/2022 22:26

Why not, its fine in the summer holidays. You'll get some that judge but honestly, who cares? Your daughter will love it. You could also look at hair chalks if you want something that washes out straight away.

HelloBarkness · 28/06/2022 22:26

I'd be more inclined to use hair chalk or something rather than an actual dye. There's all sorts of chemicals in hair dye that I wouldn't want on a baby's skin.

TheKeatingFive · 28/06/2022 22:27

Definitely hair chalk

carefullycourageous · 28/06/2022 22:27

I wouldn't, I would just say that it is not good for young hair or something and buy either a wig or some of those clip in hair extensions things in pink. Or get a couple of pink braids.

I just think it is too young for pratting about with dyes. Like makeup on a very young child.

SirenSays · 28/06/2022 22:29

At that age, she might have more fun with clip ins. They will be far brighter than you can probably achieve with that dye.
She wouldnt have to sit still for as long if she's a wiggler

I'd get something like this for a primary child, rather than dye.

FatAgainItsLettuceTime · 28/06/2022 22:30

Go for it, manic panic or Direction La Riche dyes are really gentle and wash out.

Like you say the colours won't be vivid as you won't be bleaching her hair but if she wants it then it will do no harm.

Only issue to be aware of is that all of the fashion colours have a tendency to run or bleed so switch out any white pillowcases/bedding/clothing until her hair has been way she'd a few times and expect the bath water to turn pink.

I highly recommend using Vaseline on her forehead, ears and nape of neck while you have the dye on to prevent her skin being dyed in the process.

ExplodingCarrots · 28/06/2022 22:31

If her hair is brown the pink won't show up . Hair needs to be quite blonde to be vibrant . So hair chalk is your best bet (no judgement here , my hair is rainbow ) .

3peassuit · 28/06/2022 22:31

I wouldn’t like to use anything chemical on a 3 year old but would get some clip ins.

SmileyPiuPiu · 28/06/2022 22:32

I don't think it would be as pink as she was hoping so you'd be better with clip ins. I'd use hair chalks personally.
