To dye my three year old DD's hair pink?

DD 3.5 and has been pleading for 'pink hair' since she saw her older half sibling (DSD) with a funky colour.

I don't see the harm in it and im thinking of doing it for her as a treat over the summer holidays when she isn't at nursery, not a permanent dye ofc but one of those wash out in 6-8 washes ones. She has brown hair so it's unlikely to stain as blonde would. It won't be too noticeable but should reflect the light in the sun nicely.

So WIBU? Would you judge?

If her hair is brown the pink won't show up . Hair needs to be quite blonde to be vibrant . So hair chalk is your best bet (no judgement here , my hair is rainbow ) .

Oh wow can I see?! Amazing

I thought you weren’t supposed to dye children’s hair because it’s more like to trigger allergies against the chemicals.

If she has long hair, could you just dye the ends to avoid getting the dye on her skin,

SSDDagain · 28/06/2022 22:34

Magnet. Not magnetic. Why does autocorrect hate me. Oh for an edit button.

scrivette · 28/06/2022 22:35

Hair chalk is great and if you get lots of different colours you can have rainbow hair.

I haven't really looked into it too much just yet, it's just a floating idea. I would definitely be looking into things like that though beforehand.

Doing just the ends could work

Would hair chalk show on brown hair?

I've used the Umberto Giannini Flowerology pink colour mask on my now 4yo DDs hair a few times. It's basically an intensive conditioner that also colours. She's blonde so it shows up quite well but washes out after a few shampoos.
So I'd say YANBU 😀

Paq · 28/06/2022 22:36

I'd be really cautious about any unnecessary strong chemicals on young skin, and of damaging baby hair.

Girls skin is thinner than boys and therefore more fragile. Just be careful.

LubaLuca · 28/06/2022 22:40

You'll get very disappointing results without bleach, so I'd go for the clips or chalk. It seems more fun to have an instant result and instant removal too.

Box dyes contain PPDs which people (me) can become allergic to. Either through use of hair dyes or black henna tattoos (thank you teenage holiday in Greece).

The fashion colours like Manic Panic, arctic fox and Directions don't contain PPDs, they are conditioner with colour pigments.

@MrsPartridgeKleio is she taking fashion tips from Miss Lingoss as well? Raising a true disaster magnetic there!
😉

DD asked for pink hair a few times. I took her to Claire’s and bought pink spray, she washed it out at the end of the day. We had a few uses out of it, along with glitter hairspray.

hulahooper2 · 28/06/2022 23:02

You’ll ruin her hair , can you get a spray or a pink dress up wig?

FilePhoto · 28/06/2022 23:06

My nieces had their hair dyed with tissue paper. They are very blonde though so I don't know how well it would work on brown hair.

Pacoean · 28/06/2022 23:12

I would use colored hair wax - will look bright pink even on brown hair and will wash away super easily

PyongyangKipperbang · 28/06/2022 23:15

When the DDs where young they all had long dark hair so I carefully bleached the ends on the first days of she school hols (outside to minimise fumes) and gave them ombre dye jobs all colours of the rainbow. Then it would be cut off before school. That said they were all older so 10 to 14 in age.

I wouldnt judge, so many people have mad hair since lockdown, me included. It seems to no longer be a taboo like it used to be. My favourite customer at work is an 84 year old lady who was so proud the day she walked in with bright pink hair. She said her mother would be disgusted but she didnt care!

TheFormidableMrsC · 28/06/2022 23:20

Don't dye it for goodness sake. Use a chalk or a wash out spray. In fact Bleach London do a rose soap for the hair that gives it a bit of a pink sheen. I remember a mum at school doing this for her DD during the summer holidays. It was Christmas before it finally disappeared. It looked awful on a young child.

scrivette · 28/06/2022 23:22

Purple hair chalk shows up on my very dark brown hair.

Bringonsummer19 · 28/06/2022 23:23

Yes chalk, better result. She is so little, dong need to rush these things

Narwhalelife · 28/06/2022 23:26

I dyed my 4 year old daughters hair lilac one summer she absolutely loved it!! She is 12 now and still talks about how cool that was!

in this day and age, get all the joy where you can 💕

JuneJubilee · 28/06/2022 23:27

I wouldn't dye it, not even with the so called gentle ones. Hair chalk or clip ins or 'wigs'. The colours if those are amazing!!

if she yammers tell her little children have delicate hair & skin and the dye is not ok for them, when she's 12 she can dye it, until then it's hair chalk or attachments.

all the little girls I've ever had anything to do with lived there various wigs/clip ins! Blue pigtails to pink shiny hair in 2 seconds, no fuss!!

withiceplease · 28/06/2022 23:28

Hair chalk did not come out of DD's hair just in case this useful to anyone. Had a right game - she was senior school at this point. Nothing shifted it (head and shoulders etc). Permanently coloured her blonde hair.
They told her she'd have to get it cut out until I spoke to the head and agreed she could hide it in a bun until it grew out.

withiceplease · 28/06/2022 23:29

YANBU btw

WorryMcGee · 28/06/2022 23:30

Manic Panic or Crazy Color as no PPDs, just do the ends so if you want to you can cut it off, and ignore anyone who judges 😊

kittenkipping · 28/06/2022 23:32

A three year old? 100% I'd judge. I'd consider that you aren't that sensible and are comfortable using very strong chemicals, and taking risks for no reason. Not only allergy risks (and I hope you'd do a patch test first) but dye stays in for what? 20/30 mins? That's without bleaching. And can't be touched. Or fiddled with. If she does get some on a hand she could easily eat/ put it in her eye. Washing it out could also hurt her eyes and be challenging. It's just so unnecessary at that age. She won't even remember it when she's older for you to get the cool mum points some people want.

A ten year old? I wouldn't judge at all. They would have known the implications, been able to sit and have it done carefully etc. I'm not against hair dye at all- my two had a myriad of colours throughout lockdown- all the colours of the rainbow, sometimes all at once- changing their hair for the monthly call to grandparents was one of the highlights (pun intended) for them. But at 3? I would think it's more for the parent than the child. Sorry.
