Would this bother you?

I was shopping in Sainsbury’s and thought I’d take a quick look at the undies section. A man (in his 60’s maybe) was standing in front of the bras just staring at them. At first I thought he was with someone and just zoning out while she was looking at knickers but no, he seemed to be on his own.

I was opposite looking at the knickers myself for a little while so I noticed him just standing there, entranced by the array of bras. After I turned to carry on my shopping, I saw him dart out his hand and start awkwardly fondling a couple of the bras. Then he looked about shiftily and shuffled off.

I don’t normally notice or care about men in the wimmens section, I assume they’re either with someone or looking to buy something. But he just seemed ‘off’ somehow.

YABU: Who are you to question his motives/Wouldn’t bother me
YANBU: Seems a bit odd/Would bother me

If poking fun at others is how you get by day to day, crack on.

Dirtylittleroses · 28/06/2022 08:28

I’ve seen men buy women’s undies before, they’re usually fairly decisive and don’t linger. Maybe this one simply hadn’t been given clear instructions

really? My husband is like a deer in the headlights, and plenty of retail staff have been interviewed and said they all seem embarrassed and unsure.

He’ll never know, much as I’ll never know why he was caressing polyester in Sainsbury’s

*For the record, I don’t think he was committing an offence or anything bordering on it and I didn’t find it offensive.

I was him being shifty that was weird.

Maybe he has a fetish.

As a PP says, I’ll never know*

You spend too much time observing men buying "wimmen" underwear! Get a life!

😂

I can’t help what my eyes see!

I wasn’t watching his every move, just noticed him as he was behaving rather unusually

Poor bloke.... it's comments like some of the above which have some men worried/apprehensive about buying underwear for their partners/family members etc

RiverSkater · 28/06/2022 08:52

No, not at all.

He was having a 'Father Ted' moment maybe?

Ponoka7 · 28/06/2022 08:57

There's an answer between your A & B. I'd find it odd but it wouldn't bother me. I touch items of clothing to see if they are close to a cotton feel. He could have been sent out for more breathable bras.

HollysBush · 28/06/2022 09:03

My mum has dementia and my dad has to buy all her clothes now, aged in his seventies (never having had need to buy womens clothes before and being poor in eyesight I’m sure he’d look shifty trying to work out what to get her) How awful to think he’s being judged 😔

You were and you observe how other men but their partners underwear as well, as you detailed....... seems quite odd, maybe a bit perverse?

It wasn't touch according to OP. He was fondling it!?!

For drama I expect!

HollysBush · 28/06/2022 09:14

A widower perhaps, in a trance remembering the happy times with his wife? Sorry, I’m notorious for seeing the good in people. Even if he was fantasising, what harm in that?

Mally100 · 28/06/2022 09:15

Busybeedle · 27/06/2022 22:49

Never insinuated he was harming anyone.

Just that he seemed a bit odd and furtive

Nah you were implying something, don't back track. It actually makes you sound the weird one if your mind suddenly goes to dodgy places. For all we now he was sent to buy something and it was you watching him making him uncomfortable and that's why he shuffled off 🙄

Agree OP observes other men buying underwear as well, but she deems the way they buy it ok, because she says so!

I've never observed men buying underwear, I just buy what I want and move on. It's quite weird that OP does this 🤔

HollowTalk · 27/06/2022 23:06

Do you really think his mother has sent him to buy her knickers for her? Really?

Of course it happens,
my grandma lives in a different country she often asks my uncle to get her underwear from M&S to send it to her as she use to live over here and that’s what she use to buy she is elderly and he will go and get what she asks and send it to her.

Hallyup89 · 28/06/2022 09:54

Why do people on here always have to create an issue with men? There are multiple reasons why he would be there and none of them are any of your business! Would you have thought a woman looking at men's underwear was dodgy, or would you assume she was looking for her husband?

Why does it bother you so much that you need to create a thread about it? I'd have forgotten by the time I'd moved to the next aisle.

Mischance · 28/06/2022 09:59

Reminds me of Father Ted and crew lost in the women's underwear department!

Saracen · 28/06/2022 10:02

YABU. There are many reasons why he may have been checking out the bras. Even if he was doing it for his own personal pleasure, I don't see why that's a problem.

It would be different if he'd been leering at you, making inappropriate remarks, or otherwise trying to make you feel uncomfortable. It doesn't sound like that was the case.

Proudboomer · 28/06/2022 10:09

I remember a couple of years ago when my son first started living with his girlfriend. She sent him to the local Tesco express to buy her sanitary towels as she has started sooner than expected and was stuck in the loo with only toilet tissue. He was clueless took an hour to do a 5 minute task and came home with a carrier bag full of different packets as to be on her safe side he had bought one of each.
He is educated now but. She had enough towels to last the first year together.

Yes, I think you’re right - I found it odd but it didn’t ‘bother me’ in a pearl clutchy way

And yes, he may well have been buying for someone else but got bemused. I can imagine someone not educated in bras would be befuddled by all the different permutations of sizes, fabrics and styles.

I accept the verdict of YABU !

Thank you all

Yes, I think you’ve summed up the possibilities

And given he wasn’t ACTUALLY wanking in Sainsbury’s biggest lingerie aisle I believe IWBU unreasonable to feel bothered.

I was mostly amused to be honest but I’m pretty sure he was wank-banking

But as you say, I’ll never know!

Thanks for your thoughts everyone, interesting first thread not sure I’ll start another one!

You are pretty sure he was wank banking?? Oh give over and mind your own business!

I think it reflects worse on the op, because she's the one with the dodgy thoughts. I remember buying dh some underwear. I stood there probably an age, looking and feeling the material. I even took a photo to send to him to check if he would like something like that. Now that is weird if someone was watching me.

FrankLampardsBrokenHand · 28/06/2022 10:34

It's probably about as odd as you stood observing him. There could be a myriad of reasons why he's looking at bras. As long as he's not stood rubbing his cock whilst he's looking at them he's not really doing anything which could be offensive is he?

Lalosalamanca · 28/06/2022 10:35

It's a bit off yeah, but wouldn't bother me. Worse things happen at sea lol
