To complain about cleaner walking in on me naked

Yolojo · 25/06/2022 07:20

Staying in a chain hotel, Western Europe, 8am. I'm up but also naked in bed, having a coffee. Someone knocks on the door, I ignore it, not sure if it's my door or someone else's. Then the door opens and a man calls out something, I dive under my sheets and I think I shouted out 'there's someone in here', so the door closes. I throw some clothes on, go in the corridor and say to the guy that check out is 11, and also angrily 'don't come in my room, what the hell!' I didn't have a 'do not disturb ' sign on my door, but then I wouldn't expect to have to use it if I'm checking out before 11. AIBU to complain?

I definitely wouldn't expect a knock and enter from a hotel cleaner at 8 am.
Never had that.
I would think that should only happen if they think the room has already been vacated, so are just checking, or it is after the check-out time.
I would complain. My first thought would be that there was a mix-up and they mistakenly thought the room would be vacant, and the knock was just in case.

He opened the door while I was naked. Stepping away now. Just a working class woman, survivor of sexual abuse who felt vulnerable. I started the thread to check what's normal in hotels, because I'm inexperienced. I wasn't going to complain without checking first, now I have and have received a lot of abuse for it based upon people's warped projections of me and the situation. Thanks to those who've kept it civil, I won't complain and will use DND at all times I'm in the room in future.

You've clearly had a fright. Sadly I think if you'd posted that you are a survivor and had had this experience at a hotel and were feeling shaken up you'd have had sympathy.

It's good practice to bolt/deadlock the dooe behind you overnight anyway, that may make you feel a bit more confident next time.

No it's not, don't be so fucking ridiculous
The room is her until 11, nobody should be knocking or attempting to come in unless she has requested it
Jesus wept.....
I'd complain too

I worked as a hotel cleaner. My shift started at 8, checkout was 11, rooms had to ready for guests to check in by 3, the problem being that if I had 10 or 12 vacated rooms on any one day (rather than stayovers), there was no way they could all be cleaned between 11 and 3. Some people would check out early, others could be half an hour or more late, easily, and with ‘automatic’ checkouts, there was often no actual information available, and/or people would forget and leave up a DND sign when they vacated.

It’s a fundamental mismatch between housekeeping staff shifts/workload and holiday patterns. But it’s why you will have cleaning staff knocking on doors without a DND from an early hour.

Blowyourowntrumpet · 25/06/2022 09:20

This is your fault. He thought the room was empty because you didn't answer the door

butterflied · 25/06/2022 09:20

Lol at putting a DND up being seen as "a mental checklist". Only on MN.

theemmadilemma · 25/06/2022 09:23

rnsaslkih · 25/06/2022 07:23

I do think it’s weird that he entered on the day of checkout, 3 hours beforehand.

Have you stayed in many hotels? Standard, they'll try to get in rooms as soon as possible by knocking and checking. (My experience of many large, chain hotels for work.)

MarvelMrs · 25/06/2022 09:23

8am is a bit early for cleaners but you didn’t put the do not disturb on so your own fault.

glowbabe · 25/06/2022 09:24

Grow up

blackteaplease · 25/06/2022 09:26

I think YANBU. I spent many summers cleaning in hotels and the housekeepers are updated by reception who has checked out. I would only use the DND sign for stays of multiple nights and would definitely not expect someone to try to clean my room before checkout time.

diamondpony80 · 25/06/2022 09:27

That's happened me a few times. I'm careful to use the Do Not Disturb sign now and it doesn't happen anymore.

MistyBean · 25/06/2022 09:29

I have never used dnd sign on day of departure, and think 8am is very early for them to start doing the rounds. I stay in hotels fairly frequently. I don't think there is much to complain about, but also don't think this is normal ether. Intrigued to know what cheap hotels others are staying in where this is expected.

DiscoBadgers · 25/06/2022 09:31

so you didn’t lock the door, didn’t put the sign out and ignored the knock on the door, but it’s the guy’s fault…..? Confused

KneeQuestion · 25/06/2022 09:32

Way too early and no you shouldn’t need to put the dnd sign on the door.

dnd signs aren’t a force field, I stay in hotels very often and they are sometimes ignored.

people talking about deadlocks, all hotel room locks can be overridden from outside obviously.

ive had awful experiences of this nature in hotels and it is mortifying so OP YANBU.

Twinstudy · 25/06/2022 09:32

If you're checking out that day there should be no need to use the dnd sign. There is absolutely no point in the room being cleaned until you've checked out as if you go back in they'd need to clean again before the next guest.

Housekeeping should have a list of who is due to check out/already checked out. Obviously the clean between guests is different to a standard daily clean

Having said that, it's just a mistake so I wouldn't bother complaining. Sorry your morning was disturbed op!

Ohrwurm · 25/06/2022 09:33

We've always put the do not disturb sign up on checkout days so we have the full time. Standard really. It was your fault.

KurriKawari · 25/06/2022 09:35

Drip feed.

WittyUser · 25/06/2022 09:41

SandyWedges · 25/06/2022 08:05

Yes! Have you not walked down a hotel corridor and seen them all hung out on the doors?!

That’s the thing, I hardly ever see them! Just got back from a business trip, hotel fully booked, did not see a single one up on my floor (at close to midnight, so I’d imagine most people already retired to bed).

SunniG · 25/06/2022 09:41

Yes definitely put in a complaint. You paid for your room until 11am and you should be able to enjoy your stay until then without any hassle. It doesn't matter that you didn't put your do not disturb card on the door not everyone remembers to do that. They are there mainly for if you are staying for more than one night and the cleaners come in during the day to do a clean. What if you had been fast asleep and not even heard the door knocking? Sounds like the cleaner was coming in regardless. Surely they have a checklist from reception who has checked out. I can understand you being angry and having a go, the cleaner was probably trying to get in early to get as many rooms done as quick as he could. Understand they probably have deadlines but a bit of common sense to go down the list of rooms which have been vacated would help him do his job properly.
Your leisurely morning was ruined and that is not what you pay for.

MrsPrimulaSpread · 25/06/2022 09:42

I appreciate that @HerTableLaid but with respect that’s not the guests problem
it’s the managers

Yolojo · 25/06/2022 09:42

"Drip feed." Oh, I'm very bloody sorry that I didn't disclose my sexual abuse so you could better 'judge' me earlier

OP posts:
MrsPrimulaSpread · 25/06/2022 09:43

@Yolojo , I’m so sorry , you shouldn’t have experienced that

Charlize43 · 25/06/2022 09:44

It's just tits and a bit of bush. You'd be surprised at how many men have already seen these.

The cleaner is probably more concerned with whatever chore is on their list and that required them to enter your room in the first place.

A 'Do Not Disturb' sign is more than something that just hangs from the door handle in hotel rooms. You might want to give that some thought.

lilao · 25/06/2022 09:48

I am really surprised at all of these responses - have never used the DND sign and never had anyone walk in on me!

I think 8am is too early to clean anyones room, check out day or not (unless specifically requested) but have never even had a knock on the door before check out time.

Judging by most responses this is the minority!

minuette1 · 25/06/2022 09:50

It was way too early - if I was away somewhere in a hotel I wouldn't even be awake at 8am, so wouldn't hear a knock until it was too late and my door was being opened..

LadyApplejack · 25/06/2022 09:54

I think cleaners knocking and entering is standard, and going out and confronting was OTT on your part. But 8am is too early. I think you're entitled not to be woken/disturbed or just "alert" for knocks before 9am during a hotel stay.

I wouldn't complain but if there's a feedback card in the room mention that the knock was too early.
