Covid is a bad cold now

God comments like this wind me up. You've obviously not have COVID.

There are currently multiple strains around. I'm triple vaxxed, caught it 4 weeks ago, felt like absolute shit for a week, and it took 10 days for me to test negative. My sense of taste and smell took another two weeks to come back and I'm still hit with fatigue in the afternoons.

Never felt like that with a 'bad cold'.

How can it wind you up when its the truth for the vast majority?
for 80% of people COVID IS JUST A BAD COLD.
I've had it twice and I've been more ill with the flu than I was with Covid!

Hellsbe · 24/06/2022 14:00

The fact is that covid is a mild illness for the vast majority of people and lasts a few days.
I had it and it wasn’t even a bad cold. I’ve had worse. Sinusitis for example. Much worse than covid!

Hellsbe · 24/06/2022 14:05

TwilightSkies · 24/06/2022 13:26

I’m the same. Day 5 and I’ve been so sick. I’m 36 with no health problems and I’ve felt like utter shit.
This new strain is more severe but selfish twats won’t care until they or one of their loved ones gets it and is completely floored (or worse).

Which stronger strain? It’s a virus. Viruses mutate. There could be hundreds of strains.- just like the common cold or the flu.
I’d forgotten how much the covid restriction lovers revelled in the drama of it all😀

Idontlikehim · 24/06/2022 14:17

I would go, I can’t believe people are buying tests.

Same for me. Actually had it twice now, in December and then again in April. I had burning sinus pain the first time and lost my sense of smell for a few days but that was it. Second time I had zero symptoms at all. Definitely had worse colds.

boysmuminherts · 24/06/2022 14:18

Selfish selfish selfish....
I don't care what it's like for the vast majority of people.....what about the people who end up in hospital or dead - don't you care about them??????
I have covid right now and feel fine but I haven't been outside at all. I missed my childs sport's day, I wont attend an event on Sunday - not for my benefit but FOR OTHER PEOPLE......

Ok, good for you love.

All those still suffering from fear and paranoia around covid would do well to read Professor Van Tam’s comments in the press today.

He says the covid situation is now much closer to that of seasonal flu ,both in terms of lethality and how we should deal with it. Basically accept we might get it, be ill for a couple of days if we do, then carry on with life.

GoldenSongbird · 24/06/2022 15:35

This has interesting statistics on the current situation.

Covid Infections in the UK are up by over 40%

You are confusing colds and flu

colds are generally ‘be I’ll for a few days’
flu is routinely a couple of weeks of feeling very poorly if you are lucky and have no complications

Van Tam is saying covid is now like flu

GoodThinkingMax · 24/06/2022 16:22

If you go, wear a mask (preferably the N95 ones) over your nose and mouth.

Doris86 · 24/06/2022 16:24

@Schmz I am quoting what I heard Van Tam say. Maybe he said a few days, but pretty irrrelevant really. The point he was making is we should treat Covid like Flu. i.e Not constantly testing ourselves, getting on with our lives, and if we catch it then just deal with it

TheKeatingFive · 24/06/2022 16:25

I think the FR of covid is now lower than seasonal flu.

Those people have the opportunity to get vaccinated, to stay at home themselves, to wear a mask and practice good hygiene, they make their own choices and are responsible for themselves.

We’ve already had vaccines to protect those especially vulnerable, even if they had very little benefit to ourselves, how much more do you expect people to sacrifice on the off chance they transmit a virus to an unvaccinated stranger.

Yes I’m sure you are quoting VTam
but flu is not a few days then on with your life,
that is why we have had a comprehensive flu jab programme for a long time !!!

you are confusing colds and flu and therefore minimising what VTam
is actually saying to fit with your narrative !

Doris86 · 24/06/2022 16:43

@schmz Please ignore my two days comment then, rather that focussing
on it to suit your narrative.

As I said the point Van Tam is making is that Covid should be treated in the same way as we treat Flu (not colds!)

zingally · 24/06/2022 17:01

I'd go, without a great deal of thought tbh!

Stroopwaffels · 24/06/2022 17:11

carefullycourageous · 23/06/2022 23:51

Depends whether you prioritise yourself or others.

This has to be the epitome of the whole covid thing. EVERYONE prioritises themselves and their nearest and dearest over some random stranger who may or may not be sitting near someone who may or may not catch covid from someone who may or may not be infectious.

Nobody had even heard the phrase "clinically vulnerable" before Feb 2020. People would think that they'd better keep their bugs to themselves but the constant test test test and agonising over whether you are or are not infectious needs to stop.

Hope you have a lovely time OP.

Hellsbe · 24/06/2022 17:33

@boysmuminherts More fool you!

What you mean is, you hadn't heard the phrase clinically vulnerable before Feb 2020. Those of us who are clinically vulnerable, and those who have loved ones who are CEV, absolutely had.

That said...

School staff/students have to come into school after 5 days (in fact didn't I read on here it's 3 for pupils?). Many retail staff have to come into work if positive. Why is it ok to do that but not go on holiday after five days?

I fully expect to catch covid again and again (currently on my sixth bout, just tested positive today). But life has to go on. I've had five jabs, I wash my hands regularly, there's not much more I can do really, short of never leave the house, but that's neither feasible nor desirable.

@dottydoglover

"Covid is a bad cold now"

++++

Covid has always been a bad cold for the majority of those that catch it. However for a minority it can be bloody serious and is still hospitalising and killing people even if this data is no longer being publicised.

What I struggle with is that the threat has not really changed in the last two years. There are still people being hospitalised, there are still people dying, there are still people with long term health impacts. Yes people were vaccinated but the majority had their 3rd booster more than 270 days ago. Yes the virus has evolved to be more contagious but it's lethality has stayed pretty much the same.

What has changed is that people got fed up with trying to hide away from the threat and now the urge to us all is to try to live with it and that things are "not as bad now". But the 7 day average deaths from Covid in 22 June 2021 was 12 yet now it is 64, so statistically it's actually worse now.

Does that mean that from the restrictions, the sacrifices we made on our children's education and their futures plus the massive impact on the economy that will take 10 to 20 years to repair and which we now and will continue to feel the pain from was all pointless?
