To think 2 weeks is an unusually long summer holiday?

How long do you take off on holiday if you go away over summer - particularly if you work full time?

I think half a month is a long time to expect to just walk out of a job and them to carry on without you.

But is that what most people take?

Thanks all, that pretty unanimously settles that then! No, I'm not the employer - it's just highly unusual for people at my work to take 2 full weeks at a time, they usually split 1 week holidays over summer. DH and I were arguing about this.

And yes, I'm UK

Very normal! A lot of people do this every year.

3 or more tends to take a bit more planning.

EllenWaiteourkid · 23/06/2022 20:30

This is the last time we are doing a two week break.

We retire in August, next week three weeks, year after a month. 🤣😂

LifeIsARollerCoaster22 · 23/06/2022 20:31

Completely normal.

Woodlandarchitect · 23/06/2022 20:33

Perfectly normal to take 2 weeks off in the architectural world! Husband works in marketing - same there too

paddingtonstares · 23/06/2022 20:34

I'm currently coming to the end of my holiday, 2 weeks off work, away caravanning in the UK. Had a great time! I've got another 13 days to book off when I get back to work. 2 weeks is perfectly normal.

Ahgoonyegirlye · 23/06/2022 20:34

You sound like my US family who seem terrified that someone else might take their job if they’re away for more than a week!
2 weeks is pretty standard. 3-4 even in the summer for bigger trips…

CeeceeBloomingdale · 23/06/2022 20:37

Totally normal. I work part time so can be out of the office for nearly a month around a fortnight holiday.

WellThatsMeScrewed · 23/06/2022 20:37

I bloody love having 2 weeks, it takes me at least 5 days to properly switch off from work and then spend the last day worrying about work! So actually only get about a week relaxed!

Inkyblue123 · 23/06/2022 20:37

2 weeks in summer and at least a week at Xmas - based in Uk. In. Italy it’s normal to have the whole of August off , in Netherlands 3 weeks in the dummer. Depends on where you are really….

PrettyLittleCryer · 23/06/2022 20:39

It's an American based company I work for so maybe that's part of the difference. It really is viewed as unusual to hand off your workload for that long to someone else on the team - a lot can't be handed over anyway so basically just has to go on hold for 2 weeks.

This is very odd. I work for an American company in the uk. Taking two weeks off is totally and utterly standard. I’m struggling to understand how you don’t know this. Don’t you have friends? Relatives, family members, neighbours, anyone who works who goes on holiday? It’s the most normal of normal things.

Zazdar · 23/06/2022 20:44

Half a month? We often go away for a whole month.

Zazdar · 23/06/2022 20:44

Nobody else gets my workload when I am away.

Thedogscollar · 23/06/2022 20:45

Two weeks summer holiday is standard OP. Annual leave is usually booked in advance nobody just walks out without any discussion.

This might blow your mind after 30+ years in the NHS I get eight weeks annual leave!! I take two weeks in the summer and the rest spread over the year.

IwaswhoIam · 23/06/2022 20:45

When I was working I use to take at least one 2 week holiday a year . The others were week long ones . I would say that’s pretty standard with most people I know .

That just seems like bad management. No one needs to know everything everyone else is doing or be able to do every single role but having no contingency for holiday, illness, or even death is a poorly run company surely?

Some places insist you take 2 weeks in a row at some point as a fraud prevention measure

How on earth does that prevent ‘fraud’?

VestaTilley · 23/06/2022 20:47

Are you American by any chance?

Two weeks summer break is very standard for British working people.

MaryShelley1818 · 23/06/2022 20:48

Totally normal.

This year I've had a week off in March, week off in May, then I've got 2wks in July and 2wks in August.
I'll have a couple of days in October too and then a week at Christmas.

Surlybassey · 23/06/2022 20:49

That sounds like an awful and, for the UK, highly unusual working environment OP. I too don’t understand how you don’t know that two weeks is perfectly standard, and in many workplaces it’s perfectly fine to take three, even four weeks consecutively (although most don’t as they prefer to spread out their leave allowance).

ChocolatemilkBertie · 23/06/2022 20:50

This is why I could never live in America! Two weeks for a holiday should not be seen as excessive, we get one life and there’s way more to life than work. A lot of holiday destinations aren’t even worth going to for a week because of the travelling time.

One of my old managers used to be so funny about annual leave, tried so hard to con people out of it, didn’t understand the need for a proper break. I don’t get it at all. I don’t care how people use it, leave should be used to make you happy and I think 2 weeks is much better to actually switch off.

Yes very odd, my job can’t be handed over, so I just let everyone know it needs to hold for two weeks, and I plan everything in advance so that’s fine. Any emergency my boss can step in. I also periodically check my emails when away, My peers are the same. It’s not a big deal.

I just don’t understand how the op doesn’t know two weeks is standard. She must know other people who work and not for her company.

Libertybear80 · 23/06/2022 20:53

Remind me not to ever work for an American company!!
