To think 2 weeks is an unusually long summer holiday?

How long do you take off on holiday if you go away over summer - particularly if you work full time?

I think half a month is a long time to expect to just walk out of a job and them to carry on without you.

But is that what most people take?

In my old job (banking) half of the company were legally (well, regulatory) required to take a two week holiday at least once every year

The idea being that if you are away for that long, any cock ups, bad deals etc will come to light and you’ll be found out

Mrsmch123 · 23/06/2022 19:59

Yeh 2 weeks is standard I would say. It's not the employees job to worry about cover🤷🏻‍♀️

Okeydoky · 23/06/2022 20:00

It's often less disruptive for people to take a fortnight than two individual weeks off as it only means one lot of handovers and whoever is covering their work is more likely to crack on rather than just leaving it for when they're back.

galacticpixels · 23/06/2022 20:01

In my experience 2 weeks is standard. 3 weeks is very common in my company, and it's also not uncommon for someone to take 4 weeks if they're going on a very big trip.

usernotfound0000 · 23/06/2022 20:02

I normally prefer to break my holidays up a bit more but where I work (university) it's quite normal for a lot of academic staff to take the whole of august off.

CakeParty · 23/06/2022 20:02

2 weeks is a minimum I would say. In Nordics it's normal to take at least 4 weeks (July).

Rocketpants50 · 23/06/2022 20:02

We go for 3 weeks but DH works remotely whilst we are away for the odd day.

C152 · 23/06/2022 20:03

I don't think it's long at all! If holiday was unlimited (as it is in some companies), I would definitely take a month off in the summer.

RedRec · 23/06/2022 20:03

That is really fascinating about the fraud prevention. Had never heard that before and am a bit mind blown actually!

KeepYaHeadUp · 23/06/2022 20:04

We often go away for 10 days but I book off two full weeks to give me some time either side. Completely normal IMO

AngelsWithSilverWings · 23/06/2022 20:05

Totally normal but I worked in Banking where as someone has already mentioned it was a requirement to take a full two weeks off once a year.

In the year you got married you were allowed three weeks off as you were given an extra 5 days off. I think that's now for major life events but back then it was for honeymoons.

Floydthebarber · 23/06/2022 20:05

Totally normal, and also not new as factories traditionally have a two week summer shutdown.

Musicaltheatremum · 23/06/2022 20:05

Pebble55 · 23/06/2022 18:43

Normal for us here in Germany. Some people take three weeks at certain times of the year. Our childcare closes for two weeks in late summer anyway, and we will be away in Zell am See for the full two. Can't wait

@Pebble55 I had a fabulous 2 week holiday in Zel am zee in 2006. Fabulous outdoor pool. Love Austria.

Lifeismeh · 23/06/2022 20:06

Eh? Why wouldn’t it be normal? 😂
I’ve never heard of anyone thinking two weeks is too long!

Wallywobbles · 23/06/2022 20:08

Most companies in france shut for 2 to 5 weeks in August. It's great.

I remember when i joined the Civil Service you got extra holiday for getting married. That's long gone.

Bore off!! Two weeks is really normal, not even a particularly long holiday!

hahahahahaah

Are you serious?

Jobs are there to pay for our lives and breaks from them; we don't live to work!

Was so much easier when people only got every other Sunday off work.

🤣🤣🤣

MargosKaftan · 23/06/2022 20:12

Yes - believe the financial conduct authority advises all employees take 2 weeks in a row at some point. DH works in IT but whenever he's worked for a bank, he's had it in his contract about holiday leave that he had to take 2 weeks of that leave together at least. One place wouldn't allow bank holidays in that as well so if your holiday fortnight included a bank holiday, you had to take an extra day to make it 10 business days in a row out of the office.

This year we are only going away for 1 week but he has 3 weeks off work.

MajorCarolDanvers · 23/06/2022 20:13

Completely normal in my line of work and amongst pretty much everyone I know.

I recently had a week off and regretted not taking 2 weeks as one week was just not long enough.

OneCup · 23/06/2022 20:15

2 weeks and a half at Xmas and Easter
1 week in may or june
4 weeks and a half in the summer.
My employer copes fine.

ilovebrie8 · 23/06/2022 20:16

It’s the norm! You sound like you’ve an attitude problem. I pity anyone working for you 😳..lot of places encourage a 2 week break...

Zilla1 · 23/06/2022 20:22

Normal for UK and Western Europe and we even help engineer longer (up to 6 weeks sometimes) for honeymoons and people to long haul and spend time with family spread out abroad in India/Pakistan and Australia. Wonder if the disappearing OP is from USA or has little experience of non-family businesses if in UK.

maddiemookins16mum · 23/06/2022 20:24

It’s 2022, not 1908 when the ‘yearly holiday’ was a day trip to Margate on the second Sunday in August.
Two weeks has been a normal summer break for decades.
