Should I have said something to this mum?

I was waiting for my husband in my car earlier when a woman pulled up next to me and got out of her car. As she walked away from her car she said "do not open the door or talk to anyone" and when I looked inside she had left her her daughter in her car seat whilst she went into the shop. It's really hot where I am and she didn't leave the window open, and the little girl can't have been older than two.

We left after about 5 minutes but it's been niggling me ever since. Should I have said something? WIBU if I did?

Hardly. Was sat in my own car minding my own business when she made it clear she was leaving her small child unattended.

There was q man who was charged by the police for neglect for leaving his kids in the car when he went into a shop. And the children who died in a car fire after an electrical fault whilst parents popped into their friends house.
My ex H left the kids in the car, one aged 7 and the other 3. The 3 year old got out on a busy main road to look for ex H and 7 year old was beside herself trying to find him .

If I was the OP, I would have gone into the supermarket and told security.

@SinnermanGirl
Seemingly there was a faulty light which created a hot spot which then sparked the fire but I don't know if it was ever proved!

The girl who survived wrote a book about her life story a few years ago.

Yourcatisnotsorry · 21/06/2022 20:42

I’ve had this happen and stayed with the child in the car (on a hot day, no windows left open) only to have a mouthful of abuse from the ‘carer’ who returned half an hour later. I wish I had called the police/somehow notified social services. No car seat there either.
children die from being left in cars. There was one just last week. In any temperature a 3 year old should not be left alone.

SarahJane83 · 21/06/2022 20:52

Are you for real??? That child could have died!

Hmm1234 · 21/06/2022 20:53

Would of thought if she was going to leave her child inside the car she’d put the child lock. So crazy a toddler not to open the car door and she probably left the windows shut incase they started crying. I think I’d wait till she came back but have to report her along with car reg somethings odd there!!

This is awful who would leave their young child alone in a car?! I still take my three year old with me to the bathroom when I need a wee (our only toilet is upstairs)

Why??

This was not aimed at you OP. This was my reply to someone on here saying that you should mind your own business.

Your parenting medal is probably in the post 😂😂😂

dramalama22 · 21/06/2022 21:00

I see this one mum park on double yellows outside the nursery at pick up and drop off. She runs inside with her older child and leaves newborn in the car for the 5 minutes it takes to drop off the older one. Similar !

Angiemum24 · 21/06/2022 21:02

You should gave xalled the police,I think uts awful when I see parent leaving kids under the age of 11 on their own in the car for more than 2 minutes.

Don't be ridiculous.

Children have been left in cars which have overheated

But that wouldn't bother you?

Dear God. It explains a lot 🙄

88milesanhour · 21/06/2022 21:14

I recently watched an episode of a program called Bondi rescue where a toddler actually got trapped in a car accidentally and they helped a hysterical grandmother get her out. OK it was Australia but the poor kid was looking really quite ill and dehydrated after just a few minutes. This really is one of those situations where you don't stop to think. You absolutely interfere, stay with the child and bust them out if necessary.

Not really. Obvs she shouldn’t have parked on double yellow lines but the rest I get. She knew how long she would be and everyone knows what a nightmare it is to disturb a newborn.

Hoing shopping and leaving a small child in a public carpark is much more risky.

Autumn61 · 21/06/2022 22:16

No she’s not ! It’s a pain in the arse but the rugmunchers can whip up a speed when they want :then there’s heavy things on tables, sockets to poke fingers in, peeling off wallpaper, attempting to strangle the cat ….I let was easier. To hoist aforementioned child onto hip and dump them on the toilet floor and you can pee in peace.

"rugmunchers" Hmm

Do you mean rugrats?

Strawberriesaregreat · 21/06/2022 23:06

I saw something similar whilst at a click n collect outside a supermarket. Mother popped in leaving 3 small dcs in a 4 x 4. One of them unlocked the door and was laughing and closed the door again. I waited and told a shop assistant. I waited until she returned and didn't say anything. She'll probably do it again.
Some people just haven't a clue.

BossyFlossie76 · 21/06/2022 23:30

I think it might actually be illegal to do that? I remember some stern letter from the nursery about drop off.

Anyway. I wouldn’t leave a child in the car, even my 7yo trustworthy stepdaughter.

Once or twice I have left a sleeping child in the car when I pop into the petrol station shop, if I can park in sight of the queue area. Not in the heat though.

Three year old to the bathroom a bit OTT I think.

OP- I probably would have made a point of waiting, and when clocked say “I was just getting a bit worried about her in the heat, I’m glad you’re back- bye”

Graphista · 21/06/2022 23:45

Wtf! I'd have called the police - and have done for similar and been assured by them I was right to do so. They gave the adults a right talking to as well!

In terms of safety most likely issue with a child that age is them running into the road or getting into strife IN the car I've a ton of scenarios involving falls and strangulation going through my head

What an idiot!

jaynecooper · 21/06/2022 23:48

Yes. This.

Blantw · 22/06/2022 00:10

As a firefighter, I have attended so many car fires that I never left my kids in the car whether I could see them or not. Inconvenient yes, safe yes.

Blantw · 22/06/2022 00:13

Yet, you did nothing about it.

Blantw · 22/06/2022 00:27

Temperature in the care increases very quickly and goes far beyond the temperature outside. Think about it, on a hot day you open the door of the car and don't want to get in because of the heat.

Laurajane1987 · 22/06/2022 00:35

Does no-one remember that case where the man left his I'll child in the car outside a pharmacy while he bought calpol? He was charged with child neglect and via cctv was proven to only have left them for 7 mins.
A toddler, in the heat, unsupervised, no open windows, in a supermarket car park, out of sight of mum,and the car unlocked.
There shouldn't be a single person on this thread defending or excusing this and if you are it's because your likely guilty of the same.
If Op saw this and heard this, what if it hadn't been her? What if it had been a theif? A opportunist, a frikken pervert anything. I've seen people threaten drivers with death for leaving a fucking dog and some.of you think a two year old is just fine and dandy? Wtf.
Did you know all it takes for a child under four years old is an unventilated heat of just over 24⁰c to start feeling the effects of heat stroke? They could literally die in 17 mins? That's it, 17 mins 'grabbing a couple things' and your baby is dead.
I truely boggle at not only people lack of common sense/basic knowledge but their ability to defend the glaringly obviously wrong to protect their pride.
