Roundabout who was in the wrong?

I am new to driving but still think I was not in the wrong. If I am can someone explain why thanks. I have attached a diagram to explain. I am the blue car and the blue line shows the path I am taking. I was using my indicators. The orange car is the other car in questions and the orange line is the path they deciced to take. They did not indicate and I did not know they wanted to change lane on roundabout until I got on. When I got onto roundabout (the outer lane) the car decided to change to my lane (see the orange line going from inner lane to outer lane) then pip their horn and then speed past me after both exiting roundabout and give me the middle finger. I am wrong to have got into the lane indicated in diagram (the outer lane) on roundabout when that lane was clear and only the inner lane had a car in it. Thanks sorry if not clear.

Splendid diagram though OP.

There are two lanes on road exiting roundabout as well and I assume if you are in inner lane you use the lane on the right? And there is plenty of time to switch lanes after exiting

I've been driving a long long time and I'd assume the same as you. They've change lane half way across. If the exit to the roundabout only had a single lane then fair enough but there were two lanes so I didn't think they switch. Mind I'd have waited to see what they were doing....

smileandsing · 20/06/2022 20:34

I saw exactly this happen at a roundabout I use all the time recently. The 'blue' car that pulled out was very much in the wrong and almost caused a multiple vehicle collision. They carried on regardless.
Always give way to traffic from the right

SavoirFlair · 20/06/2022 20:36

I agree with the reality that everyone should give way to the right

However it's fascinating that whoever is coming from the right, then seems to have impunity to do whatever nonsense driving moves they want to, irrespective of road markings or what the Highway Code shows, while the person at the next exit has to wait in case that person cuts lanes, shoots into their lane etc

HavfrueDenizKisi · 20/06/2022 20:36

Not RTFT but blue car at fault.

You give way to the vehicle that is ALREADY ON the roundabout - in practice this means the car approaching from the right.

Doesn't matter if you think they should be indicating or staying in one lane.

Onlyforcake · 20/06/2022 20:38

Experience would have made me watch them closely and wait. If there had been an accident the fault wiuld lie with you asthey are already udi g the toundabout and coming from your right. A LOT of drivers use roundabouts very selfishly when they vould clearly indicate or use lanes to accommodate others. 10/10 for the drawing.

Staffy1 · 20/06/2022 20:39

You need to wait until the roundabout is clear, not just the lane. I hate it when people come onto the roundabout alongside me, stopping me from changing lane to exit.

Looneytune253 · 20/06/2022 20:39

You don't enter the roundabout even if the orange car was going round you still need to wait for a clear gap

MiniCooperLover · 20/06/2022 20:40

I would consider the orange car to be in the wrong lane to go straight, they should have been in outside lane, but never assume you know what the car to your right is going to do. Give way and then move.

Supersee · 20/06/2022 20:40

Really hope any CF parking threads have this calibre of diagram going forward.

picklemewalnuts · 20/06/2022 20:41

If the orange line wasn't there, just the car, would everyone give the same answer? Imo, the orange car drive very badly, and the only mistake OP mad was assume they would drive correctly- which you can't ever do!

The Lane the OP pulled into was clear. She was allowed to pull in to it. The decision of the orange car to change lane unnecessarily, when the way was not clear, was not her fault. However, always assume the other driver is an idiot, especially on a roundabout.

I'm with you, @SavoirFlair .

You need to wait until the roundabout is clear, not just the lane. I hate it when people come onto the roundabout alongside me, stopping me from changing lane to exit.

Or where possible, you could change lane on approach so you're in the correct lane to exit

Just a thought

bumbledeedum · 20/06/2022 20:43

Question answered & not read RTFT but excellent diagram OP

Suddha · 20/06/2022 20:43

You were in the wrong. You always pause before entering a roundabout and give way to traffic already on the roundabout. Yes the orange car should ideally have exited in the lane to their right and then moved to the left lane afterwards if necessary. But regardless, you always give way to traffic on the roundabout.

Also the roundabout image you’ve drawn on is an American roundabout. The Give Way lines are on the right. A British roundabout has Give Way lines on the left - a clear indication that you’re meant to give way to traffic on the roundabout!

Thinkingblonde · 20/06/2022 20:45

Two lane roundabout, left lane is left turn only, huge road markings indicate this. R/H/L is straight on or right. I’m in the right lane, going straight on, I can’t indicate as I’m neither turning left or right. Driver to my left, turns right across my direction of travel, I had to swerve right to avoid her,, crashed into a lamppost and almost wiped us out. Police involved etc. The other driver tried to blame me, saying I was in the wrong lane. Nope.the photos I took at the scene of the cars and the road markings proved me right.

PerfectlyQuiet · 20/06/2022 20:52

OP, you wouldn't mind saying which roundabout it was then we can look at it on street view.

SomePosters · 20/06/2022 20:53

Always drive like other drivers may go on an unexpected rampage at any moment

especially at roundabouts

The week i passed my test a lorry cut me up at a roundabout.

just drove right into my lane out of nowhere on a 5 lane spiral roundabout.
i changed lane without looking first because it was that or certain death
when I looked over while 100% committed to the escape manoeuvre I saw over my daughters empty car seat a blessedly empty lane in my mirror

always give yourself room to escape a maniac in the road.
they could have a heart attack at the wheel or be having an argument with a passenger, they could be drunk or high or driving a sick child to the hospital

that’s why the give way on the right rule

i can see why you wanted to be able to pull this off as it would be efficient in heavy traffic but unless your stationary queuing I wouldn’t risk it. Act like everyone’s a maniac just in case they are

Tiani4 · 20/06/2022 20:56

Great diagram.

Sorry but you were in the wrong.

You shouldn't have pulled into roundabout as it wasn't clear - you need to always assume cars coming round the roundabout will be working their way outwards to exit. They could have helped by indicating left but it's fast and they were already travelling round & you have split second to go from indicating round roundabout to switching to im going off-

but in terms of right of way they had the right of way and you entered roundabout when it wasn't clear nor safe🙃 and nearly caused an accident

YABU as you nearly caused an accident on a roundabout by being impatient to sneak on there

Tiani4 · 20/06/2022 20:59

UsernameA1B2 · 20/06/2022 18:03

So do you always give way to people on right in both lanes even if you want the outer lane and they are in inner lane?

Yes as you don't know if they are going straight ahead about to change lanes to exit

There are two lanes on road exiting roundabout as well and I assume if you are in inner lane you use the lane on the right? And there is plenty of time to switch lanes after exiting

Unfortunately most motorists don't seem to know that they can (and should) leave the roundabout directly into the right hand lane of the exit when they themselves are in the right hand lane/inner lane of the roundabout. Most seem to carve off directly across into the left exit lane.
50/50 on this one - if they had exited into the RH lane as you turned left into the left lane the throughput of the roundabout would be significantly higher than all waiting one at a time. Pretty much why the roundabout has 2 lanes in the first place. Take it as a learning experience that virtually every other motorist is a blind prat and never assume they will do what they should do. Also multilane roundabouts often behave a single lane one if they are small roundabouts.

SavoirFlair · 20/06/2022 20:43

You don’t have the chance if some fool has come out alongside you at the exit before the one you want, that’s my point. No one should be coming onto the roundabout directly beside you or you can’t change lanes before your exit.

surreygirl1987 · 20/06/2022 21:05

Oops. You are definitely in the wrong. They should have used their indicator but they still have right of way. They obviously have to shift lanes at some point!!

bellabasset · 20/06/2022 21:08

I did a mock test with another driving instructor and he failed me on a big roundabout near Battersea Park, he said it's give to the right and that's how I've always remembered it.

whynotwhatknot · 20/06/2022 21:10

yes because i do this although i definitely signal theres 2 lanes so i use them its annoying about the indicator but you always have to give way to the right

PrivateHall · 20/06/2022 21:11

OP I recall making this mistake when I first started driving too. You don't indicate left until you are about to turn off - otherwise you would assume he is going to turn off at the exit you were at, so you might end up pulling out in front of him. You just sit and wait until there is nothing coming on your right. Always give way to everything on your right at a roundabout. Obvs he was a complete knob for reacting as he did though!
