Styling yourself as Lord or Lady is the height of twattishness?

Googling an old ex of mine and found he's now changed his name (it would appear) to be 'Lord' and his newish wife is 'Lady'.

Don't you think that's the height of twattishness to change your name like that? See also adding a well-known/famous name to your own surname to make it double-barrelled so someone thinks you're related to them, e.g. Jones-Connery. The ex always did have delusions of grandeur! Grin

Is this really a thing people do though?

PistachiokindaBear · 17/06/2022 12:17

Someone I work with literally bought his Lord title...he is such a twat Grin

HerTableLaid · 17/06/2022 12:18

Hang on, so you’re saying they both changed their names by deed poll or whatever from Gary and Sarah Jones to Lord and Lady Jones?

Imissmoominmama · 17/06/2022 12:22

I know a couple who have done this, but they’re really into dressing up in period costume (all meticulously sewn by her), and fantasy stuff (not kinky!!).

It’s all in context.

TheKeatingFive · 17/06/2022 12:22

Well that's weird

This sounds really cool. DH and I are into fantasy and DnD, I wish I could sew costumes!

Loool, my cousin's friend's mum did this. Bought a title and now she's Lady of whatever made-up thing. So ridiculous.

GettingEnoughMoonshine · 17/06/2022 12:33

How do we buy a title? It would tickle me endlessly to have the postman to deliver to Lady Muck, at the doctors etc. 😁

I don’t know if they still do but they used to sell them in WH Smith where they have all those other experience gifts like adopt a penguin and have a star named after you. You can buy ‘lordship’ of some random square meter of the highlands.

Brefugee · 17/06/2022 12:41

i think the deal is that if you own land in Scotland you are allowed to style yourself Laird which then gets translated to Lord.

I know a few people who have done this, mostly to make sure that areas of land remain undeveloped.

Ah well that's no fun. Why would anyone want to be Lord or lady of a random bit of land? Certainly sounds twattish to me OP.

antelopevalley · 17/06/2022 12:46

So people who inherit titles and use them are not twattish?
Why is that?

RustyShackleford3 · 17/06/2022 12:47

I told student finance that my title is "Princess". They actually use it on all correspondence. It makes me very, very happy. I can't quite explain why.

Putasmellonyou · 17/06/2022 12:49

Me and my partner have bought those titles - i did it as a gag gift one Christmas - I wood never dream of actually using them 😮

was funny for a couple of weeks round the house calling each other my lady etc 🤣

Putasmellonyou · 17/06/2022 12:50

Would* 😳

I have never heard of this in my life.

MrsWarboyss · 17/06/2022 12:51

I think it's ridiculous; I work in a hotel and we get people booking as 'Lord' 'Professor' etc. As if they thinks we will bow and scrape to them

Vikinga · 17/06/2022 12:52

Don't know of anyone who's done this but then these titles are meaningless now aren't they?

FourChimneys · 17/06/2022 12:52

I don't use a title such as Mrs or Miss but sometimes an online form can't cope with that concept. So I select something from the drop down box like Lady or The Rt Hon.

Deidretheelf · 17/06/2022 12:54

How do you know he didn’t inherit or get given the title? It is possible. A childless uncle or cousin could lead to that.

Well to be fair I see nothing wrong with people using hard earned titles such as Professor and Dr- no one is suggesting you should bow it’s just a title they are able to use.

brookstar · 17/06/2022 12:55

But the title of Professor has been earned and they are entitled to use it! Like Dr......it doesn't mean people expect you to treat them any differently.

Although I do like using Dr as it means people don't know if I'm a man or a woman ( although they often assume man!)

Turnthatoff · 17/06/2022 12:57

Even if it is inherited, I think it’s still cringe.

Shehasadiamondinthesky · 17/06/2022 12:57

Are they witches? In the USA 3rd degree witches style themselves Lord and Lady but anyone doing that over in the UK gets laughed off the planet.

Blue4YOU · 17/06/2022 12:58

@MrsWarboyss there’s surely a bit of a difference between professor and lord - one is earned, the other inherited or bought as described above.
My title is Dr. Never used to use it until I was treated like shit by the NHS (I have a PhD not a medical degree) - I use it everywhere and all the time.
It is my title and not more pretentious than “mrs” of “ms”. It states a fact if anything and does not imply I think people will bow to me (might be nice though 🤣).
Lord on the other hand… I had a neighbour who bought the lady title and changed her passport and driver’s license. She thought people were impressed (absolutely was not).
