Styling yourself as Lord or Lady is the height of twattishness?

Googling an old ex of mine and found he's now changed his name (it would appear) to be 'Lord' and his newish wife is 'Lady'.

Don't you think that's the height of twattishness to change your name like that? See also adding a well-known/famous name to your own surname to make it double-barrelled so someone thinks you're related to them, e.g. Jones-Connery. The ex always did have delusions of grandeur! Grin

Accidentally added Lady on a school uniform order website, and I am unable to change it ..luckily there awe delivered to my home address, not school. I could ask them to change it, but that’s more embarrassing 😳 👸🏻

Fortnum and Mason and other posh shops are brilliant for this. I recently sent my dad a box of scotch eggs addressed to Air Commodore :D

That’s how we know a delivery is a birthday present from DD. I sent her one back to her Uni college address, addressed to some unlikely compound like “Right Rev Lady…” or something. It’s turned into an arms race now. So yes I suppose titles have a use now I think about it. 🙃

PolkaDotMankini · 17/06/2022 21:44

Hotel Chocolat send me junk mail to 'Commander xxx'. It's purely to give myself a chuckle when I pick up the post.

lookforthesun · 17/06/2022 21:46

@GettingEnoughMoonshine go somewhere like www.highlandtitles.com and you can take your pick! Not even that expensive considering the price of land and you can visit and have a tour of the estate etc.

😃

VestaTilley · 17/06/2022 21:50

How very non-U.

EcoEcoIA · 18/06/2022 07:53

@GonnaGetGoingReturns I'm part German too. At first I read hun's in the modern sense of honey's, and thought you must be dead posh to be on such familiar terms with the royals 😄

Patienceisntvirtuous · 10/09/2022 20:54

I'd never do it because I do think it appears twatty however some are for a good cause. Established Titles plant a tree for every bit of land bought by their customers, for example.

georgarina · 17/06/2022 12:30

Loool, my cousin's friend's mum did this. Bought a title and now she's Lady of whatever made-up thing. So ridiculous.

All 'titles' are made up and a total ridiculous sham

Seeingadistance · 25/12/2022 12:29

RustyShackleford3 · 17/06/2022 12:47

I told student finance that my title is "Princess". They actually use it on all correspondence. It makes me very, very happy. I can't quite explain why.

You've made me happy too, now! Brilliant!

@MrsWarboyss there’s surely a bit of a difference between professor and lord - one is earned, the other inherited or bought as described above.
My title is Dr. Never used to use it until I was treated like shit by the NHS (I have a PhD not a medical degree) - I use it everywhere and all the time.
It is my title and not more pretentious than “mrs” of “ms”. It states a fact if anything and does not imply I think people will bow to me (might be nice though 🤣).
Lord on the other hand… I had a neighbour who bought the lady title and changed her passport and driver’s license. She thought people were impressed (absolutely was not).

I am in total awe of anyone with a Phd - well done you!
(hoping that doesnt sound patronising!)

SnowAndIceLobelia · 25/12/2022 12:33

I know someone who added a Lord to his name. Then he committed a very little petty crime that would have gone completely unnoticed- until the local court reporter realised that 'Lord' something or other was in the dock and reported it extensively.

Very very extensively.

Purplechicken207 · 25/12/2022 12:34

The bought titles from Scottish land are inherited too...my great gran had one bought for her as a bit of a laugh (she grew up in Scotland, then moved to England). It's going to go to a cousin at some point as its inherited down the generations 😂

Finebonechina123 · 25/12/2022 12:42

All titles are made up and pretentious. Deciding to call yourself Lord Lady is no more or less stupid than aristocracy adopting / being given titles and using them. It's all make believe nonsense. Why do we buy into it when it's all a nonsense.

Dustyblue · 26/12/2022 06:53

I'm Australian and had no idea you could buy titles on the internet! It sounds about as legitimate as buying real estate on the moon (which is also a thing).

What a brilliant scam both of them are, wish I'd thought of it.

MissTrip82 · 26/12/2022 07:09

Not sure how it’s really different to an inherited title?

That’s not earned either. And also a bit embarrassing.

PuttingDownRoots · 26/12/2022 07:26

During Lockdown I used to get parcels delivered to Princess Roots. It made DDs laugh.

(They used to think I was really a Princess when they were 5yo... as due to DHs job we went to a lot of black tie events and they linked the long dresses to bring a Princess)

topcat2014 · 26/12/2022 07:39

I looked at doing an online course in America so you could become Reverend..

topcat2014 · 26/12/2022 07:41

My father never uses Dr in case he gets asked to help sick patients on planes..

LoobyDop · 26/12/2022 07:58

Buying a title and using it with a straight face is pathetic. If you’ve earned or inherited one, it’s as much your legal name as Mrs or Ms Jones is someone else’s. I don’t see why other people’s insecurities should stop you from using your legal name.

ThisSolstice · 26/12/2022 10:06

topcat2014 · 26/12/2022 07:41

I’ve been using ‘Dr’ for nearly 30 years, and have never once been asked to give medical attention on a flight, despite flying relatively often.

Shehasadiamondinthesky · 17/06/2022 12:57

Are they witches? In the USA 3rd degree witches style themselves Lord and Lady but anyone doing that over in the UK gets laughed off the planet.

Yeah I know a few over here. An awful couple who introduced themselves to me as The Lord blah blah and The Lady so and so asked me if I would do their 3rd degree. I said come back when you've learned some humility. They never came back.

Willyoujustbequiet · 26/12/2022 10:17

I did this with a plot of land in Scotland for my teengage daughter. All proceeds went to restoration/conservation.

She doesn't use it but its a conversation starter and she's tickled pink by it. I think given the rationale behind it, its a great idea.

Daisy75 · 26/12/2022 11:13

My DH has an inherited title but chooses not to use it. He doesn’t feel comfortable. Sometimes we get post that uses it - mainly sales brochures for yachts we couldn’t ever dream of affording; companies find us in Debretts and send all sorts of sales blurb.

Emanresu9 · 26/12/2022 19:47

Same willyoujust was it with Highland Titles? I liked the conservation aspect and you can visit the land. Not that we will probably ever get up there but who knows!

Notthetoothfairy · 26/12/2022 20:35

I find this post offensive.
