Styling yourself as Lord or Lady is the height of twattishness?

Googling an old ex of mine and found he's now changed his name (it would appear) to be 'Lord' and his newish wife is 'Lady'.

Don't you think that's the height of twattishness to change your name like that? See also adding a well-known/famous name to your own surname to make it double-barrelled so someone thinks you're related to them, e.g. Jones-Connery. The ex always did have delusions of grandeur! Grin

I don't use a title such as Mrs or Miss but sometimes an online form can't cope with that concept. So I select something from the drop down box like Lady or The Rt Hon.

I do this as well when ordering stuff online. My last parcel was addressed to 'Sister Northsea Crone' 🙏

Fluffycloudland77 · 17/06/2022 14:04

Dhs ex boss bought a title and has a house plaque saying “surname manor”.

Everyone takes the piss behind his back over it. That and his long coat with matching hats.

He thinks he’s a style guru.

I told student finance that my title is "Princess". They actually use it on all correspondence. It makes me very, very happy. I can't quite explain why.

I think I love you! Doing this from now on

Nodancingshoes · 17/06/2022 14:19

Well if they bought the title then, yes, it's twattish. I know an actual Lord and Lady who are very down to earth and normal but they do use the titles as they are inherited. I think I would to...actually I KNOW I would 😂

Online booking for the ROH gave a wonderful range of options — I think I got tickets for Tosca as ‘Admiral’ once. 😀

Fortnum and Mason and other posh shops are brilliant for this. I recently sent my dad a box of scotch eggs addressed to Air Commodore :D

Sapphirensteel · 17/06/2022 14:37

Know someone who did this as a joke, said he was “ common as muck” so they’d become Lord and Lady Muck. It was something they bought online, you buy a square foot ( might have been a square metre) of land in Scotland , chose their title and got a certificate with Lord and Lady Whatever printed on it. No idea what it cost. Just think he was a person with too much time on his hands b

It’s a bit of fun. My very immature son bought a Lordship with his Uni friends just to use for their Amazon parcels! Gives the delivery drivers a laugh and it’s harmless. Lighten up!

ChangedMyNamrButStillMe · 17/06/2022 14:40

@Bobcat246 The option to put silly titles is, I’m sure, part of the reason why F&M have survived. All my family send each other bits from F&M each year to “Brother”, “Sister”, “Father” and the cat who is “Wing Commander”

Not in his case trust me! He'd love to be mistaken for that and when he lived in UK was always poncing about posh areas trying to be that way (sadly he had a strong accent from another part of UK).

Don't the proper aristocracy regard the Mountbatten-Windors as nouveau riche arrivistes?

and if you're channelling the Mitfords, they're huns really Grin!

Not that I can talk as I'm part directly German!

How can you buy a single square metre of land that has it's own 'estate' name associated with it? Otherwise, how do you know what to call yourself? Or do you just go by What 3 Words, so you're Lord & Lady Unfortunate.Penguin.Diarrhoea?

I'd love to meet Lady Muck & Sir Reverence, though Grin

Sense of humour anyone??

imnotwhoyouthinkiam · 17/06/2022 16:51

DS1 got a 'Lordship' for Christmas. He has a sq meter of land in Yorkshire( I think). He doesn't do "stuff" and that's what he asked for. Luckily he won't GAF if people think that him a twat!
The bank wouldn't accept it as a title though as its not hereditary, so he's plain old Mr there.

I always fancy being a Sultana.

Basilbrushgotfat · 17/06/2022 16:54

Lots of peerages were bought in the first place to be fair - it's a practice that goes back hundreds of years (and not just linked to more recent governments).

It is kind of tw*tty to buy a Lord/Lairdship though just so you can legitimately call yourself by a title.

Why? Because buying titles might be historically normal, but one never admits to it! One may climb the social ladder but one is only ever supposed to be lifted up it 😆

Plus, you know, having a title implies certain connections and background etc. Historically, they tend to have come with political influence etc etc

LoobyDop · 17/06/2022 16:56

I don’t see why it’s any more twattish to call yourself Lady Jane Bucket because you are the Duke of Bucket’s daughter than it is to call yourself Miss Bucket because you’re Mr Bucket’s daughter. If I had a title I’d use it- I wouldn’t see any reason to try and hide the family I happened to be born into, any more than anyone else. Buying one is a bit sad, though. It’s not like the Queen would be fooled if you were introduced, and how embarrassing would that be? 😂

Ds got a 'Lordship' from his friends as a joke birthday gift.

He uses it for internet shopping. Cracks me up every time a parcel arrives Grin

You don't actually need a lordship to do that though. You can have a parcel sent to whatever name you put on the order.

declutteringmymind · 17/06/2022 17:15

Yes. They are on groupon. Was sorely tempted to buy it for my uppity SIL for her 40th.

antelopevalley · 17/06/2022 13:33

@GonnaGetGoingReturns so can men only use the title Lord if they own a castle? Even if they inherit the title?

No, the title and the lands can have separated. I know someone whose elder brother became the 12th Baron X, but the estate had been sold off in the 1930s — the younger brother bought back the (now ruined) castle and was restoring it. The elder brother lives overseas.

I used to work with someone else who, when an elderly cousin died, would inherit a title, but no estate, and whose life was going to be entirely unchanged.

CathyorClaire · 17/06/2022 17:19

But then he wouldn't have the square metre of real estate that's going to make his fortune when he's the last one holding out over granting fracking rights Wink

FindingMeno · 17/06/2022 17:21

A bit wanky if you ask me. But I don't really care - each to their own.

Meghan, is that you?
