Irresponsible text on homework

DD1 is in Year 1 and got a weird text for her homework.

The text is about a boy who wakes up in the middle of the night and sneaks into the kitchen to eat chocolate cake.

AIBU to think this is totally inappropriate and irresponsible?.... These kids are 5/6 years old, they don't need to be encouraged to have this kind of unhealthy and also deceitful behaviour (the boy complains the floor creaks and is going to wake up his parents).

It's a Michael Rosen poem and the mother gets upset with the boy in the morning when she finds out. However the excerpt in the homework doesn't include this last part.

It's quite a fun poem but for older children who know better..... and maybe not something to show at school....

My eldest (now 8) studied that poem in school too, and loved it. Talked about it for ages. Didn't turn him into a delinquent. I think you need to ease up a bit.

SmartCarDriver · 16/06/2022 21:21

I'd raise it with the chair of governors or maybe get a snap ofsted inspection done?

Honestly, it'll be The Exorcist by year 3, if you don't step in now!

The biggest issue would be a responsible adult telling a child that food is something to be feared and scared of, therefore implying food is such a massive thing in life and must be mastered like maths. What the kids are actually going to hear is being one ounce above average means they're failures, which will send half-way down the path to disordered eating as adults.

AmaryIlis · 16/06/2022 21:23

You're going to have a nasty shock if you ever read that dangerous subversive Beatrix Potter to your child, especially the story of Peter Rabbit stealing the veg from Mr MacGregor's garden..

ittakes2 · 16/06/2022 21:36

if you are shocked about this you are going to have a nervous breakdown in the next few years - wait until they read Ronald Dahl!

saraclara · 16/06/2022 21:36

I was brought up on My Naughty Little Sister. Now there was a book full of Bad Ideas!

alfagirl73 · 16/06/2022 21:39

I want to thank the OP for this thread... because until today, I had actually never heard of Michael Rosen or the Chocolate Cake poem. I have just checked it out and what a joyful thing! I watched him read it with a big silly smile on my face and now every time I eat anything yummy I'll have his "MMMMMMMMM!!!!!!" noise in my head!

It's also made me want to write a little story about a wonderful midnight feast I had as a child that to this day remains one of my most treasured memories.

OP - I'm sure that your child isn't on her way to a life of chocolate cake inspired crime or pondering the skills she needs to avoid creaky floorboards! Let her enjoy a wonderful, fun and joyful poem!

🤣🤣🤣 1 of my kids is in y1 too, have you really got this much time on your hands?

That poor teacher.

alfagirl73 · 16/06/2022 21:42

@saraclara OMG My Naughty Littler Sister! That takes me back! Bad Harry... biting Santa... the trifle incident! Loved those stories!

Arsewangry · 16/06/2022 21:44

This is definitely a case of precious first born. You'll cringe at this one day, op.

BrylcreamBeret · 16/06/2022 21:49

I agree op. The last thing we need during an obesity epidemic is to have poetr condoning the binge eating of fats AND carbohydrates post 6pm. It's not good enough. I hope your school doesnt allow birthday party bags or cupcakes?

SleepSleepRaveAsleep · 16/06/2022 21:50

Just had a thought matilda the book/film with Bruce bogtrotter must be sensored, omg encouraging children to stuff their faces with a huge cake 🤣🤣. I have such fond memories of my nan reading me all the roald dahl books when I was around this age.

Soooonotoverit · 16/06/2022 21:55

You’ve complained about books from school too, OP.

Homeschooling may be worth considering? Or maybe look into what exactly is the issue so you can move forward productively.

Or they hear Albert and the Lion, you'll want to keep them away from zoos forever incase the poor child pokes the lion with a stick. That's probably such an old poem that many on here will never have heard of it, I've just realised.

So many parents seen their child's world through adult eyes, children love gore, mischief and poo, not necessarily together though, hence the success of Horrid HIstories etc..

We performed Albert and the Lion in middle school - I was the lion 🦁 😁. I'm now 43.

A few years ago my 'virtually family' friend and I did a repeat performance at a bbq for our parents. "An a stick, with an 'orses 'ead 'andle..."

Great memories.

Have a word with yourself OP 🙄🙄🙄

You’d win the daily prize in the staff room for “who had the most ridiculous parent today” though, so it’s not all bad 🤷🏻‍♀️

Meem321 · 16/06/2022 22:05

You should read your daughter some Carol Ann Duffy poems instead. You'll love them, I promise.
Maybe start with 'Salome' and take it from there. Enjoy x

GoodThinkingMax · 16/06/2022 22:05

Oh come on, OP. Really?

winterchills · 16/06/2022 22:05

Wtf 🤣🤣i was expecting it to be highly inappropriate when I opened the thread.

tillylula · 16/06/2022 22:15

The best part about having a chocolate cake in the house is sneaking down at 2am whilst everyone's asleep and having a slice 😏 we've all done it!

Luredbyapomegranate · 16/06/2022 22:18

You sound fun!

alfagirl73 · 16/06/2022 22:19

I want to buy a chocolate cake now just so I can have it in the kitchen and sneak downstairs in the middle of the night for a bit! Life is too serious - everyone should have some child-like fun sometimes!

FreetheKhalo · 16/06/2022 22:23

This thread is full of fools. Chocolate cake is obviously symbolic of heroin. It’s how they get them involved into county lines.

ddl1 · 16/06/2022 22:23

Goodness- if this bothers you so much, how will you deal with your child hearing stories about naughty Goldilocks stealing all Baby Bear's porridge, or rhymes about Little Boy Blue sleeping on duty when he's supposed to be looking after the sheep?
