To be annoyed my neighbour has painted their side of their fence?

... without telling me? My side looks awful now. If they had told me they were doing it, I would have arranged to get my side done too. Its a totally different colour and the the top and sides are the new colour, as are all the drips on my side. They did this a few years ago as well but it was the same colour and I still had to promptly paint my side because it looked so bad with the drips. I probably said nothing at the time. I will need to get my side painted the same (neighbours choice of colour again)- I don't know whose fence it is, if anyones, it was here before we both moved here, but it maybe is theirs. Just annoyed because I think we usually have a good neighbourly relationship. I have a family party planned at the weekend and have been getting the garden looking presentable and it now looks, well, shoddy and horrible

Oh FFS of course they should have talked to you. It's nice, its neighbourly and it's what adults do.

AIBU is really full of aggy counts today who would pick a fight if they looked in a mirror.

Ignore.

Oh, is it? My neighbour didn’t tell us when they painted their side of our fence. Some splodged and dripped through, as it will, but I wouldn’t have expected them to tell us first, we could hardly say no, how dare you. My other neighbour also didn’t tell us they were moving house, which is awfully unneighbourly according to MN, but we have had no problems or bad feelings with either.

Tilltheend99 · 16/06/2022 20:46

That fence looks not treated at all. Surely any colour would have bled through but the moss and rot would have got to it eventually?

Fencepanels · 16/06/2022 20:47

My neighbours painted their side, had their painter put sheets on their side but let him splash paint all over my side on my newly paved garden

they then hammered and screwed the panels in without telling me so I can’t take the panels out to paint them properly on my side

Do you need permission to put a hook for a washing line into a fence? I'm not sure who owns the fence, newbuild so was here when we moved in.

If it's a new build, fence ownership almost certainly goes with whoever has responsibility for that border - which is on your deeds. And technically, yes, if it's not your fence you need permission. Though I've never lived anywhere where that's been bothered with (but also never lived anywhere with newish fences).

Fencepanels · 16/06/2022 20:48

I’d have absolutely paid to do a joint job

Fuck me, I never knew I was transgressing by painting my side of our fence (which legally belongs to the neighbours)

well there you go - it is could amount to criminal damage

Hard to make a good faith fence painting into criminal damage because of the lack of criminal intent.

Do you need permission to put a hook for a washing line into a fence? I'm not sure who owns the fence, newbuild so was here when we moved in.

We're on a new build estate (10yrs old) & our fences with our neighbours either side on the estate are jointly owned; any fence with the perimeter of the site belongs to us. So when our back fence (perimeter) came down in the storms, we had to pay for it to be replaced.
But our neighbours on the right painted their side of the jointly owned fence dark grey (didn't tell us, didn't need to) & we've now painted ours sage green (didn't tell them, didn't need to).
So you might find it's joint responsibility for you too.

Maybe they are teaching their kid karate?

CanYouNotReadTheSign · 16/06/2022 21:34

Well this escalated quickly, didn't it?!

Fulbe · 16/06/2022 21:51

I've been this neighbour, until this thread I never knew it was a problem.... Maybe just try talking to them? They might have some paint left over. TBH after this I'm going to talk to the neighbours and offer to paint their side too. Maybe they just don't realise.

Goldencarp · 16/06/2022 21:57

If it’s your fence they aren’t actually allowed to Paint it without getting permission. If it’s theirs I guess you’ll have to ask them if you can paint your side.

cheesersqueezer · 16/06/2022 22:03

Ok, I should have titled it, painted their side of The fence, not Their fence. Thanks to those who agreed that it was fair enough to be annoyed about having an unsightly fence. My neighbour has since said, sorry, I should have told you I was painting the fence- I hadn't said anything about the fence, so she must have forgotten. So, I posted too soon, but fear not, I won't post again.😊 Just as the drippy paint will 'ruin the party', this thread has cured me of ever posting to sound off again 😕

That's a shame, OP.

I was going to suggest painting your side with a clashing colour. It can seep and spread into their side then, and help them remember to be more considerate!

Again, thank God most people IRL aren't batshit.

MrsSkylerWhite · 17/06/2022 20:50

Have you invited them to come and look at your side? If not, YABU.

Paint your side the colour you want. They can get the drips this time.

Don’t solicItors offer 30 mins free about this kind of thing?

SmartCarDriver · 16/06/2022 18:41

That makes no difference, it's not law which side they go. On our fence we put those ugly things on our neighbours side!

When we put up new fences (at both sides and bottom of garden because couldn't be arsed with looking at neighbours awful fences a day longer), the company putting up the fences asked us which side of the fence we preferred and put the fences our preferred way on all three sides.

Whatever way they face has no bearing on who owns them.

BlackbirdsSinging · 29/06/2022 22:39

Plant a hedge instead. Much better fur the environment and looks better too. It will be full of nesting birds and hedgehogs will make a home under it if you are lucky.
