To be annoyed my neighbour has painted their side of their fence?

... without telling me? My side looks awful now. If they had told me they were doing it, I would have arranged to get my side done too. Its a totally different colour and the the top and sides are the new colour, as are all the drips on my side. They did this a few years ago as well but it was the same colour and I still had to promptly paint my side because it looked so bad with the drips. I probably said nothing at the time. I will need to get my side painted the same (neighbours choice of colour again)- I don't know whose fence it is, if anyones, it was here before we both moved here, but it maybe is theirs. Just annoyed because I think we usually have a good neighbourly relationship. I have a family party planned at the weekend and have been getting the garden looking presentable and it now looks, well, shoddy and horrible

My new neighbours once painted their side of my fence in blue, all my fences were green. They painted the tops blue, then slid the panels out and painted our side blue as well! We had already sold and we're moving out, so I bit my lip on that one and thanked fate for my lucky escape.

22fgjiyt · 16/06/2022 18:57

Just ask them about the colour - they might even have some left they might give you.

Annoying as it is for you, they might've just done it on a whim while the weather is good.

Oh FFS of course they should have talked to you. It's nice, its neighbourly and it's what adults do.

AIBU is really full of aggy counts today who would pick a fight if they looked in a mirror.

Ignore.

Why though if they're painting their side of their fence?

They surely don't need permission?

CandyLeBonBon · 16/06/2022 19:00

Move out, burn the house down and relocate to deepest darkest Peru, op. It's the only way!

Clymene · 16/06/2022 19:02

Because if drips through and looks shit on the other side unless you're really careful @SmartCarDriver which I assume they haven't been or the OP wouldn't know

I'm sure most people can cope with a less than pristine fence for a couple of weeks and then can paint it themselves when the feel like it. Assuming it's their fence and the NDN agrees.

quicklybeendrivenmad · 16/06/2022 19:08

Or just do what I did and put in composite fencing that never needs painting

They do if they don't own it.

SmartCarDriver · 16/06/2022 19:13

@Azandme if you read the thread title it would appear they do own it? Contradicted by further information, but a very great area. You would've thought after the first situation the OP would've found out.

Snowflakes1122 · 16/06/2022 19:15

Look at your deeds. It will say who owns the fence.

YANBU if it is your fence.

YABU if it is not your fence.

Whoever it belongs to can do as they please with it.

But what if they didn't want to pain ttheir fence and were happy with it how it was? It's not really very fair.

OP just paint it neon. That should cover the drips.

Dishwashersaurous · 16/06/2022 19:29

Just paint it whatever colour you like and then if it drips on their side they will know what it's like.

Although then they would repaint again.

And you would have to the same again.

And again.

And again.

Or you could pop round and tell.them that there are drips all over your fence and could they please fix it.

TheNoodlesIncident · 16/06/2022 19:31

If you can't be bothered painting it tomorrow then do as Clavinova suggests and festoon the fence with bunting and the like. Nobody will notice a few wood stain splashes and even if they did, it's unlikely to spoil the party for them. Undercooked sausages, yes - paint drips, no.

Sorry posted too soon @Savemysoul21 , OP has been working on the garden and painted the thread previously!

Stop with your whataboutery!

If we’re going to exhaust all possibilities then we need to consider if the op is still able to do this? Clearly it is no longer as straight forward as ‘painting the fence’ otherwise she wouldn’t have come on here and made a thread about it. Op could quite possibly have been involved in a tragic accident leaving them wheelchair bound.

EatYourVegetables · 16/06/2022 19:37

Buy hot pink paint, paint your side, make sure it drips.

Dishwashersaurous · 16/06/2022 19:40

Also going forward could you do lots of planting on your side so that you can't really see the fence.

Then doesn't matter what they do with it.

SmartCarDriver · 16/06/2022 19:40

@ToughLover I hadn't thought of that, you of course are most likely correct!

SmartCarDriver · 16/06/2022 19:41

@skybluee how has it suddenly become OPs fence?

That makes no difference, it's not law which side they go. On our fence we put those ugly things on our neighbours side!

Yes, most people do, which was rather my point.

Leftbutcameback · 16/06/2022 19:44

We did this once. We were being unreasonable but I didn't know any better at the time. Didn't realise about the drips (we didn't paint the top). Ours neighbours are lovely and I was pretty embarrassed.

I was thinking the exact same thing. These things are always complicated

SmartCarDriver · 16/06/2022 19:53

@FourTeaFallOut if it's only most, it tells you nothing at all. You'll have people coming on adamant that it's the other way round.

FourTeaFallOut · 16/06/2022 19:56

Yes, of course. It was simply suggested by way of a clue. That's why I didn't wade on to the post saying I had the answer to the op's problem - it was just a quick question.

do they even know? Seems like a non-problem…knock on the door, ask them which paint it is so you can get the same one as it has ran through. Next time they will hopefully remember before they paint. They may even offer to do yours since they messed it up…I know I would
