To not understand why people go abroad on holiday in the summer?

My social media is full of people on holiday abroad at the moment. It's glorious here and I've got a few days off work so I've just been for a walk round my village and will spend the afternoon in the garden reading in the sun with a couple of glasses of something.

Britain is lovely in the summer - I'd far rather go abroad later or earlier in the year when the weather is not so good here and make the most of the weather here while we have it.

I've never really understood the desire to go abroad while it's nice here. Anyone else with me?

And never underestimate the joys of mooching around an unfamiliar foreign supermarket.

I like this too. My husband took me to Sweden to show me where he is from, I loved the supermarkets, I definitely didn’t like the prices though!!!

SquirrelSoShiny · 15/06/2022 13:38

And yes, also British prices are insane. This year is exceptionally expensive for flights but in general it's better value and guaranteed good weather abroad. It's a no brainer.

whoruntheworldgirls · 15/06/2022 13:38

Might be nice now but the weekend is looking naff.
I'm tied to school holidays
I don't go abroad just for the weather, we like to get out an explore.
I'm not paying a ridiculous account for a UK holiday when i can go abroad for not much more and know I'll get the weather and a nice pool for my daughter.
Packing for a UK holiday drives me mad having to pack for all weathers plus a load of toys incase of being stuck indoors.
I honestly try to avoid UK holidays if i can, as beautiful as some locations are (Devon/Dorset/Cornwall)

notacooldad · 15/06/2022 13:38

It was a joke 😂 I was pointing out the absurdity of someone asking if it was a male poster given that it has little/nothing to do with holiday preference. Honestly I do wonder where this website finds posters because I’ve never met the likes of these people in real life
oh heck, this thread is mashing my head now!!😂😂😂😂

These threads are always such a failure of imagination. Not everyone lives in the SE of England which does actually get summer weather fairly consistently. And yes, there's more to holidays than weather. There's food, music, speaking another language, lovely scenery, cool city culture. What's not to love?

What’s evident from this thread is that lots of people don’t want to experience different things - they want the same climate, same scenery, same foods and drinks etc as they get at home.

to me these people are insular and booooooooring!

Strawberrypicnic · 15/06/2022 13:41

You can't really talk about British weather as a homogeneous thing. I grew up in NW England and now live in SE. When I moved here I was surprised to discover that there is a part of the UK that actually gets a 'summer' as such. And even that's not guaranteed.

It does people (adults and children alike) good to experience different culture!

You don’t have to go abroad to do that. I can count three different cultures and four different religions among my immediate family alone.

I'll be glad if we get that here in Scotland

Snowdropsarelovely · 15/06/2022 13:43

Because it's cheaper and the weather is better!!

@ForestFae

but you can get a far fuller experience abroad - can you really not understand that?

Othersideoftheagean · 15/06/2022 13:46

@worriedatthistime but nobody’s saying go on holiday in the UK (unless you want to ofcourse). The OP raised the point that people go on holiday abroad in the summer when they could be at home enjoying the best of the UK weather and go on holiday abroad at a different time when the UK weather is horrendous.

I hate UK dark winters so a bit of winter sun perks me right up mid winter. Nobody is suggesting spending money on a UK holiday instead of an abroad one? The OPs query was why leave when the UK is nice and stay when it’s less nice in the depths of winter when you could be sunning yourself then.

You can - you can also sit on a beach and do nothing. Not all abroad holidays are the same and neither are all uk ones. Stop pretending people who go on holiday in the uk are less cultured than anyone who sets foot on a plane.

Somersetlady · 15/06/2022 13:47

If i had a swimming pool at home then I would agree with you but for us the water makes it sea or pool.

BinBandit · 15/06/2022 13:47

I only had one holiday as a child, it was about 5 miles from where i lived, in a caravan near the sea. It was a sunny week but that's very unusual for where we live. However what I really wanted for my DC was to be able to swim outside in a pool or the sea and feel the warmth on their skin. We did a real mixture of holidays as they grew up both in the UK and abroad, but they still as adults love a holiday with sea warm enough to swim in. I love that for them.

Revive this thread 3 weeks into the summer holidays when Devon and Cornwall are having a cold and wet spell

@Othersideoftheagean

i think it’s cos a lot of people are constricted by the school holidays

@ForestFae @riesenrad

how could you prefer Yorkshire to the Caribbean? Like genuinely youre being serious?

if you’re not taking the piss, then how can you possible prefer Yorkshire to Caribbean?

can you explain to me as I find it really hard to understand!

I have never been to either, but I would love to go to Yorkshire over Carribbean! Definitely. But I would go to Spain, Amsterdam, Germany, Vienna, Japan, Korea, China (post covid), Malaysia, Bali, Boston, Edinburgh over Yorkshire.

I didn't grow up in the UK though so I feel like I have to explore the UK more!

You can’t predict when the UK will be nice, I once went to Northumberland in July and it rained every single day, one night the wind also took out the power. So we spent most of our week in shops in either Newcastle or Edinburgh.

BinBandit · 15/06/2022 13:51

Unless you are prepared to go long haul then weather in the normal europe spots isn't guaranteed outwith the summer either. We had a lovely week away last week but still had a few cloudy days where it was ok to swim but not warm enough to sit about when wet. Long haul really needs more than a week which generally means higher costs plus potentially taking DC out of school. It's really a mix of personal choice and affordability for most people.

TenoringBehind · 15/06/2022 13:52

The weather is generally rubbish here in August.

onthefencesitter · 15/06/2022 13:56

ForestFae · 15/06/2022 13:43

That isn't the same. I live in London where 100 languages are spoken and there are people from every country you can think of. I work in a company which basically feels like the United Nations. But I would never claim I understand a specific culture just because I met someone from XXX country.

You need to visit another country to really understand what life can be like. It's not as good as living there (I have lived in 3 different countries) but visiting another country is at least a window into another culture.

Othersideoftheagean · 15/06/2022 13:57

@Simonjt not precisely no but as I previously mentioned if you look back (and as a generally widely accepted concept) it’s far more likely to be warmer in July than February.

There been freak July hailstorms in Spain in July but I’m talking about generally. Generally speaking the UK is warmer and has more hours of sunshine in the summer than the winter.

I don’t know if there really is a shift in the climate but I have to say in over 20 years of taking my kids abroad which only finished about 3 years ago I can honestly count on one hand the days I’ve had rain. I know this because it was so unusual.
We used to go to France every May, Spain in October, Skiing in February and different places at Easter. The days I remember rain are one year camping in France for one day - I was in a mood so that made me grumpier!. Another time on the Costa deal Sol where it rained really heavily for two days and once in Ibiza. Maybe I was just lucky with my timings, I don’t know but we planned our destinations around what the weather was likely to be like.
