AIBU ice cream truck

Hesalwaysplayinggolf · 12/06/2022 20:23

So we live on a quiet residential road.
My daughter goes to bed at 7pm every night.
3-4 nights a week an ice cream van drives and parks down our road blaring his ice cream truck music. This varies in timing but can be as late as 8pm. Usually between 7-8pm.
This wakes my daughter every time and she takes ages to resettle. She’s genuinely scared.

AIBU to talk to the ice cream man about this?
My husband thinks I’m ridiculous. I think it’s a mickey take to be blaring loud music at 8pm.

We have her window closed and white noise in her room but it still wakes her. I know I could put her to bed once he’s been but he doesn’t come every night so it’s hard to know and she is tired by 7pm.

Fir example tonight dd went to bed at 7pm, I sat down to eat at 7.45 and by 7.50pm he had woken her up. Just got her back down 30mins later.

YABU - Put up with it he’s just earning his living
YANBU - This would annoy me too

Called the pokeyman where I am cuts any confusion 😆 The Maine man sells the lemonade.

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 13/06/2022 20:21

Sure they're not selling drugs?

popcornfrenzy · 13/06/2022 20:45

Rosehugger · 13/06/2022 12:42

And why only ice cream? What’s next? Cheese trucks? Frozen peas trucks? Dog food trucks? Wine trucks?

When I was little (early 1980s) this may blow your mind, but we had the pop man come round once a week. Selling all your lemonade, cola, cherryade and dandelion and burdock requirements! He would also take the empties.

Yes! The pop man IIRC he paid 10p for empties

@TigerLilyTail im going to have my binoculars at the window next time he comes late and get hubby to rock the baby 😂

Very much appreciated!! 😆

Im pretty sure Daimbar is a bloke. I think most people in the UK are aware that van and truck are used interchangeably, so I think posters are incredulous that you were unaware of this. English is one of the least pure languages out there, so it seems a bit silly to be “purist” about it, but I’m sure it’s been like this throughout the ages too!

MushyPeasPrincess · 14/06/2022 00:20

@FilterWash excuse me, what do you mean by "you people"? Are you aware of my ethnicity? Confused

No I don't have any of those. I live in rural north Scotland and am over 30 minutes drive from the nearest place to even have a basic takeaway.

Someone on MN says something ridiculous - so therefore they MUST be a man? You haven’t been around here long, have you?

No, he mentioned on another thread that he was a bloke. Not that it matters, I suppose.

I wish the ice cream man came round us, I would love a Mr Whippy 99 with raspberry sauce.

bozna · 14/06/2022 02:39

Mine kept coming af tea time so few times kids weren't allowed them, now we've been blackisted 😂

I came on to say that!

Are you in Glasgow, OP?

daimbarsatemydogsbone · 12/06/2022 20:25

What is an Ice Cream Truck?

UABU for calling it a truck instead of a van unless you are American!

Rip pop man! Now I want some dandelion and burdock

RunningChaos · 14/06/2022 04:44

Our 4m sleep regression was hideous. 45min waking for 6 weeks. An ice truck did the same. But every night.... by night 6 I lent out if the window and gave him what for. Its totally out of character and I hate confrontation.! Never seen him again though! I believe he now parks the other side of the village. I feel awful now. I was very very tired

It's always easy to spot the person who hasn't read the thread. 🤦‍♀️

Onwards22 · 14/06/2022 06:13

Me too!

OP I think you’re being a bit U.

There will be plenty of children who don’t go to bed so early who will want a ice cream and it’s this person’s income.

If he never gets any business at that time then he’ll soon try somewhere else and won’t be an issue for you but if he is getting business then he’s going to carry on.

What happens if someone has loud music coming from their car?
You can’t control all of the noises outside unfortunately.

I would ask if he parks down the road more as then it will be further away.

Ive never heard an ice cream van who continually plays the music though. I thought the music automatically cuts out when they stop?

Sorry you’re thread was high-jacked by a poster trying to cause an argument.

HeckinMiffed · 14/06/2022 06:44

Not sure if you're BU but I guess ice cream van isn't aware of the impact he;s having so perhaps a chat might help?
DS9 loves going to the icy but only at the weekends. Feel like a crap mum though cos when he was wee, we used to tell him the icy only played the music when they ran out of ice cream! Grin

daimbarsatemydogsbone · 13/06/2022 14:43

It's not faux confusion - it was genuine and accentuated by the confusing use of both terms in the OP.

It takes a special kind of person to use such advanced vocabulary in all their posts but still be like "duhhhhh what's a truck?" and expect people to believe there was no malice in the question.

Pruella · 14/06/2022 06:53

What were you confused about though?

No I don't have any of those. I live in rural north Scotland and am over 30 minutes drive from the nearest place to even have a basic takeaway.

It was an attempt at humour on a humorous thread.

"You people" referred to everyone saying how amazing it would be if you could get booze, condoms, crisps etc. delivered.

And absolutely nothing at all to do with "ethnicity" in any way, shape or form ?
(wtf).

Never mind. 😑

ahunf · 14/06/2022 07:57

Surely if he came around 4/5 he would get more customers?

Perhaps OP is at the end of the route.
Perhaps it's their evening job and can only sell ice cream in the evening.
Maybe they're after the people going out for the evening who'd like an ice.
Whatever the reason its a bit late ( though it's never really to late or early for ice cream)

How does an ice cream truck (heh) manage to be in all locations at the same time?

It's obviously a later part of their round.

Before Covid a woman near me (you know the type, hun, tried every venture nappy cakes, bad shirt printing etc) bought herself an ice cream van as her latest venture.
Presumaby she had no licences in place etc and she certainly didn’t have an MOT on it.

Anyway, off she went on the local streets, but, there was an existing ice cream woman, she’d had the route 25 years and was distinctly unimpressed. What followed was comedic. Hun would go out and find herself followed by existing van. There was even a video of hun driving round and round a roundabout with her following and desperately trying to lose her.

This went on for about a month, both vans would stop together and people in the know would go to existing woman, leaving hun huffing behind her counter. Hun then took to local Facebook, posting the video someone had taken of the roundabout issue. I think ‘what did you expect you’ve tried to steal her livelihood’ comments came as a shock to her.

It all fizzled out after that, then Covid came and she’s now back to making personalised water bottles, but it does make me chuckle when I think of the pair of them tearing up the street playing two different tunes.

Exactly. Diam must have the EI of a brick to not see why people interpreted their question that way. The first post by them was just a total blunt "what" which can easily be a dig, and ONLY when challenged was then all the "I'm interested in words" angle brought out.
Doesn't take Poirot to see what happened Grin
