Hairdressers or Barbers for teen son's haircut?

My husband wants our son (13 years old) to go to his barbers for his haircuts from now on but I think he should keep going to my hairdressers because she knows how to do it properly.

Who's right here because we've had a row/argument about it? What do your teen son's do?

My son's hair is slightly longer than most boys hair so that's also another reason why I think My hairdresser should keep on doing it. That being said I might try to have a conversation (last time my husband just came up to me and said that he was going to the barbers next time and when I tried to have a calm conversation with him he just started shouting and arguing) with my husband and see if he thinks his barber would have a good grasp of his longer hair

Have either of you considered asking your son?

Yes we’ve asked him and he’s said he doesn’t mind x

I've been taking my son to the barbers since he was 3. At 13 I hope he will be getting his hair cut without me getting heavily involved.

Poor kid, stuck in the middle of a ridiculous squabble.

DelurkingAJ · 09/06/2022 23:06

Both DSs (9 and 6) go to the barber with DH. They have lots of younger gents in there with haircuts that aren’t ‘shot back and sides’. For a while as an impoverished student I went to a barber who did an amazing job with a Flickr bob for me for about a fifth of the price. Try it? It’s cheaper and hair grows back.

magicaldaytime · 09/06/2022 23:08

I think DH’s problem is more that he doesn’t want to see DS go to a Salon as DH thinks it’s girly etc

I should add that he's 7 now and he loves the atmosphere of the barbers shop, the music, the banter. He doesn't have particularly short hair either.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 09/06/2022 23:09

Yep, ds has going going to the barber with dh since he was about 6. Barber also does long hair.

whatnowteenager · 09/06/2022 23:09

Barbers.. from about his age, with two now older teens 12-14 was the age they switched.

try a few but they actually do a better job and much cheaper.

magicaldaytime · 09/06/2022 23:09

I did suggest to DH maybe a mobile hairdresser who comes to the house but he just walked off in a huff

He is 13. Let him decide. And if he doesn't mind than it doesnt matter does it
But if it is only slightly longer than the average boyhair (?) Than just take him to either.
You would only be better off at a hairdresser if he had shoulder-length hair or longer.

WindyKnickers · 09/06/2022 23:09

Maybe your DS should give the barbers a go if he's never been, then he can make up his own mind.

AdalineStephen · 09/06/2022 23:10

Why are you making such a fuss? What difference does it make, apart from the barber probably being cheaper?

Let your DS go and see if he likes it. If not, he can go back to hairdresser.

Cameleongirl · 09/06/2022 23:10

If he’s not bothered then let him decide when he’s ready for his next haircut. My DS (also 13) has switched from a hairdresser with me to a barber with DH. I think it’s because he likes hanging out with his Dad and they usually eat something while they’re out, I. e., he gets a treat. 😂

magicaldaytime · 09/06/2022 23:11

How much cheaper are barbers? No idea how much they cost to be honest x

magicaldaytime · 09/06/2022 23:11

It was DH who brought all this up, not me or DS x

My teen son goes to a barber who also cuts hair for women with short styles.

It's up to your son imo.

TrashyPanda · 09/06/2022 23:14

Why do you think a barber won’t cut his hair “properly”?

magicaldaytime · 09/06/2022 23:16

TrashyPanda · 09/06/2022 23:14

Why do you think a barber won’t cut his hair “properly”?

Because his hair is longer than most boys hair and the hairdresser knows his hair as she’s cut it for years xx

Our sons are 14 and 11 and been going to a barber with their Dad since they were tiny. He takes them, I get a bit of me-time and they're all happy with their cuts. But I don't think his reaction to you is on at all.

It’s his reaction and the fact he mentioned it out of nowhere that bothers me x

DS is now 20 but I took him to his Dad's barbers for his 1st ever proper haircut- aged 11 months. The intention was he and DH could go together and it was one less thing for me to deal with. Once he got to 5/6 ish I left them to it and DS is now 20 and still goes along with DH Grin Same barbers/staff 20 yrs later- the lady who did DS's first cut is still there and often still cuts his hair. He does not have a shaved head / short back and sides- they are v professional and do a great job on all lengths of hair. Be honest- how many men do you see in your salon?

To be honest, not many
