Hairdressers or Barbers for teen son's haircut?

My husband wants our son (13 years old) to go to his barbers for his haircuts from now on but I think he should keep going to my hairdressers because she knows how to do it properly.

Who's right here because we've had a row/argument about it? What do your teen son's do?

My son's hair is slightly longer than most boys hair so that's also another reason why I think My hairdresser should keep on doing it. That being said I might try to have a conversation (last time my husband just came up to me and said that he was going to the barbers next time and when I tried to have a calm conversation with him he just started shouting and arguing) with my husband and see if he thinks his barber would have a good grasp of his longer hair

My DS just goes wherever he can get it done quickly (not one for planning ahead)

My daughter (17) has short hair and loves going to the barber - cuts it better, no small talk expected and it's £15 rather than £40!!

Weird.
My DS started going to the barber with his dad from when he was about 3 and on his own from when he was 11.
They cope with any length hair and it is much cheaper than a hairdresser.

It sounds like your dh feels quite strongly about it so I would personally just let him take him to the barbers and sort out his haircuts going forward. I take my ds, aged 4, to the barbers but I've never really cared much about his hair style so long as it looks fairly neat.

My sons have been going to the barber since their first haircuts. But I don’t think it’s a big deal, as long as your son is comfortable. I don’t think barbers know how to cut long hair though, they’re far better at clipper cuts. The way your husband behaved regarding this is not ok.

Also, wherever he goes, don’t go in with him

Inchail · 10/06/2022 11:04

Ours went to the barber when they were little for short back and sides
Now they're teens they go to a hairdresser because they want something more interesting
Not helpful, I know!

It sounds to me like you are worried your DS may have his hair style changed, and you’d hate him to lose his pretty wavy hair

can you let him go to the barbers, and after that he can choose which he prefers?

my teen boys with lovely hair ended up with skin fades and buzz cuts , which is probably exactly what you dread, but I thought it was important to let them choose

maybe, psychologically, you need to let go of your little boy for a bit and give him some autonomy?

NeverDropYourMooncup · 10/06/2022 11:12

Is it possible that your husband's plan is to get him to a barber to impose a short back and sides on your son?

erinaceus · 10/06/2022 11:58

Can you suggest that he try the barbers once then decide? Would that suit all of you?

SparklyLeprechaun · 10/06/2022 12:14

Fairly ridiculous reason for an argument. DS is 14, I haven't had a say on which barbers he goes to or what style he gets for at least 2 years now. He just asks for money and comes back with his hair cut. If he doesn't like the cut he goes somewhere else next time.

Not all barbers are trained at cutting longer hair.

We stopped going to the barbers because my DSs have longer hair requiring scissor cuts rather than clippers. One of the two barbers had training for longer hair so it would end up taking ages as we had to wait for him, then the DSs to tag team. With ASD and the sensory input it was too much for DS1 and we now go to a hairdresser who cuts from home.

If the barbers do the hairstyle required, that's fine but not all do.

SeaDogs · 10/06/2022 12:22

Why not try the barber? He'll want to stop using your salon eventually so you may as well give it a try. It will most likely to be quite a bit cheaper. If he gets a bad haircut then you can think again but the risk of one bad cut is no big deal.

Cameleongirl · 10/06/2022 15:24

Re. Barber’s being cheaper. Yes, they are, but the one DH and DS go to also offers the full works-hair wash, head massage, etc. and my DS opts for them every time. He likes being pampered!

DH complains that DS’s hair cuts always cost more then his ( of course, he could tell him not to have those extras but he likes spoiling him abit). 🤣
