To say I love summer but I can't wait for the darker days

I usually love summer but the last few weeks I've found myself wishing for darker days. I wake up in the morning and the sun/ light is beaming in. I might as well be sleeping outside. I want cosy snuggles in my duvet with snow outside. But I also want to feel the sun on my face.

Spot on, Delatron.

Probably the same people who are wound up about the holiday advert with "it's the most wonderful time of the year" soundtrack - they cannot fathom WHY a warm summer holiday is more wonderful to many than a gloomy and cold winter.

I don’t think that’s why people dislike that advert/find it annoying. They’re simply pointing out that the song about kids jingle-belling and caroling out in the snow in christmases of long ago isn’t the best or most obvious choice for a summer holiday advert. Same way it would be odd and stupid for John Lewis to set their Christmas advert to Cliff Richard’s Summer Holiday,

mydogisthebest · 08/06/2022 09:13

I love being woken up by the light. Don't even close my curtains. Summer I get up around 6.30am. In the winter I struggle to get out of bed by 9am.

I hate hate hate hate hate dark morning and evenings/afternoons. So depressing.

We have about 9 months of cold, wet, grey days in the UK. This year so far has been pretty miserable.

Meraas · 08/06/2022 10:18

Sort out your sleep hygiene, OP.

I hate that advert but I love holidays!

I just don't like the use of a Christmas song throughout the whole year because for me listening to Christmas songs is part of the excitement and festive feeling. Using it all year ruins the charm for me.

For those that don’t understand.

Imagine in this county you had the weather you don’t like for at least 9 months a year (possibly more). It was over 25 degrees for most days, hot, sunny...

Then for a mere few weeks you finally got some respite. It cooled down and you got your precious dark and dreary and cold. Imagine all those that enjoyed the heat started moaning, saying it’s too cold? It would be annoying even if it didn’t impact you. It’s hard to fathom after months and months and months of all that hot weather they love why they couldn’t just tolerate the very brief change for a few weeks until it goes back to the weather they prefer for another 9 MONTHS.

But them not tolerating it makes no difference to these who love it - no matter which way round it goes.

Im lucky I suppose in that there is something for me in each season, but the flip side is there is something I dislike too.

Temperature is something that is often a big bone of contention. What one person finds as pleasant someone else will be too hot and someone else will be too cold. None of them are universally right or wrong - they just all feel it differently.

For me, I love the light nights. But struggle to sleep when it gets too warm and sticky. Houses here are designed to keep heat in rather than staying cool.

I love being able to get outdoors more in the summer months, but in a year where my hayfever is bad that's not possible and it can be really miserable.

I hate having to work in the summer as would much rather be outdoors in the nicer weather, but am stuck in a hot non air conditioned office hoping that having the window open creates enough of a breeze to cool it down, while also trying to navigate the inevitable "it's too draughty with the window open"

People are allowed to enjoy different weathers and they are also entitled to say when they are not enjoying it.

I agree. I've only heard that advert as it's on in the background so couldn't have told you what it was advertising but hate the fact I'm hearing a Christmas song all year round.

part of the excitement and festive feeling

And lots of us do not experience that "excitement" or "festive feeling" and associate the most wonderful time of the year with sunshine and holidays.

11c and raining in Glasgow today. Summer?

But it doesn’t matter what you associate with a wonderful time. The lyrics of the song aren’t about every person’s subjective opinion of a wonderful time of the year. The lyrics are about kids caroling in the snow and glories of Christmases past and kids jingle belling. The song is about Christmas time, not summer. No matter how much you think summer is the most wonderful time of the year.

Justme10 · 08/06/2022 12:09

I don't think there's many people saying they wish it was wet, cold and grey 12 months of the year though.

I know for myself I want the summer weather but I just don't want the sun to rise so early and set so late.

ilovesooty · 07/06/2022 09:57

I know. The cosy snuggly crap begins earlier every year.

It does. It really pisses me off, we barely get a summer and there are people moaning about the three months we do get - presumably the same people who fly off on holiday for the sun.

@Mount2Climb

i don’t know why you’re acting like we live in the Mediterranean!

Most of that stuff would apply if we have 30 degree wall to wall sunshine every day which we absolutely do not!

Uk summers do not mean staying indoors between 11-3 and needing to forgo eye makeup!

I agree ! Honestly think poster is nuts or not in the UK lol

Don't get me wrong, I LOVE a summer holiday and it definitely is one of the most wonderful times of the year!

But I just don't like to hear a Christmas song all year round when they are usually reserved for a specific period and it's nice (for a lot of people) when you hear your first Christmas song of the year to mark the start of the run-up to Christmas.

It’s nearly mid summer and barely been warm. 🙄.

This .

I'm still waiting for summer

Staying indoors between 11am and 3pm or if I must be out wear a wide brimmed hat and keep to the shade

Am I right to assume that you don’t live in the UK?

I'm in the U.K. and would avoid sitting out/being out for long at those times
I burn within 10 mins at 10am in summer, so unless I'm slathered in spf 50 head to toe and under shade, yep I'm avoiding it

Delatron · 08/06/2022 15:13

If I could go out between 11 and 3 without a coat or umbrella at the moment I’d be happy. I’ve not taken the covers off my garden furniture for weeks. It’s June FFS.

Swayingpalmtrees · 08/06/2022 18:14

As a treat to celebrate the fact we might actually have a normal summer, I bought some beautiful flowery glasses and a pitcher for the table outside to match my summer flowers and at this rate I am not sure it will ever be used. My roses are being battered to death - petals everywhere. The wind and the rain has been chucking it down and most of my flowers are waterlogged.

How can anyone in their right mind be wishing sunny weather away?!
I am honestly feeling depressed we are nearly half way through June!!!

Swayingpalmtrees · 08/06/2022 18:16

I resolutely stood in my flipflops today and a summer skirt as the rain lashed down, and people were walking by in ski jackets, hoods up !! 😂 I really wish I was joking! They were looking at ME with something approaching incredulity....in June!

Mount2Climb · 09/06/2022 07:15

@LuckySantangelo35 @anon2334 @I'm sure it depends where in the UK you are.

I'm in London and there's been a few horrid humid summers. Taking public transport in the summer is hellish.

I find the UK is (understandably) ill equipped to deal with hot weather so it's possibly more uncomfortable at lower temperatures than in hotter but heat-adapted countries (siesta, different business hours, fans/AC common place, different style and material of architecture, dry heat instead of humidity...etc).

UV sunlight is terrible for the skin, you don't need to be in the Mediterranean to stay away. You can sunburn in the UK, too. I wear factor 50spf everyday.

@ConfusedByDesign I feel the positive effects and confidence from eating well and working out in as little as a week so start now I promise you'll feel better after a month of self care even if you don't reach your target there will be a huge improvement in how you feel.

Adamantspants · 09/06/2022 07:28

I adore Winter. Summer and sunshine makes me depressed. I have the opposite of SAD. People think I am weird and compared to the majority, I probably am but roll on Winter.

I'm in London and I'm from abroad and no the summers here are not med like at all. When you have 6 months of 32+ and humid months yes a humidity that the even the UK doesn't have and until recently some homes didn't have air con them come back and tell me that. The UK is unpredictable and heatwaves don't last months a x months. Weeks yes, last year was a joke of summer lol

It was 11c yesterday morning in Glasgow with rain lashing down. 11c is admittedly a fairly mild day in winter, but it's not summer skirt and flip flop weather, is it?

Kanaloa · 09/06/2022 11:23

Regardless of whether it’s June or not it’s no wonder people were looking at you askance in flip flops and a skirt in the pouring rain. People dress for the weather, not the month. Why are you acting like the people dressed normally for the rainy weather are the weird ones and not the person choosing to go out in summer clothes just because it’s June regardless of the actual weather. Complete lack of common sense.

veggiesupreme · 09/06/2022 13:13

If you can't wear your flip flops in June then when can you?! This is the summer. Not asking too much to be out of coats for a few weeks a year

Yeah but surely you don't just wear them regardless of the actual weather?😕

Sadly in the UK we know weather is never guaranteed regardless of the month....'it's June' means nothing!
