To say I love summer but I can't wait for the darker days

I usually love summer but the last few weeks I've found myself wishing for darker days. I wake up in the morning and the sun/ light is beaming in. I might as well be sleeping outside. I want cosy snuggles in my duvet with snow outside. But I also want to feel the sun on my face.

I still have my winter duvet on my bed!jumper is still on,I even contemplated wearing my Woolly hat this morning, summer has not arrived!

TulipsGarden · 07/06/2022 11:04

Good god no! I love waking up to daylight, it makes getting up so much easier. I hate hate hate dark mornings.

GlitteryGreen · 07/06/2022 11:10

I agree OP!

We have a blackout blind but on a velux window so if we open the window even a crack the light comes in so early.

I do like having more time in the evenings to be outside but I think I like it best when it gets dark about 7 :)

Summer in England lasts about 3 weeks

Summer in Scotland is 3 days, if you're lucky. That's why the "cosy snuggles with my famalam" brigade grind my gears SO MUCH. They have the overwhelming majority of the year for their twee cosy shite. Yet pop on here complaining about light streaming in and dark nights when their problem is easy to solve with an eye mask or blackout blinds.

Lack of natural daylight in winter is not such an easy fix, is it?

I was In Edinburgh last week and the weather was glorious. Came back to Liverpool to a cold and dull day

LuckySantangelo35 · 07/06/2022 11:19

Plus if you were desperate for “snuggles” you could still do that in summer, it’s hardly like it’s boiling hot in the uk

tigger1001 · 07/06/2022 11:20

"how could people not like this stuff?!"

As someone who suffers hayfever, which although bad enough now has definitely lessened as I have got older, the trees, grass and flowers are the enemy. When I was a child it was torture. My eyes would almost swell shut if anyone near me was cutting their grass. I still dislike the smell of freshly cut grass now.

@IllDoItButOnlyForTheAttention

lots of us (most of us actually) don’t have trees and birds and fields etc on their doorstep. But nothing stoping you taking a trip out on a weekend to a country park or whatever and enjoying these things

Thank you for the tip 😆

I just wrote and deleted a bit of a rant about the logistics of days out to country parks on useless underfunded rural public transport. Deleted because I definitely didn't come here to whinge.

Just to point our that tripping through the cowslips and laughing gaily with merry friends under starry skies on beaches is not everyday life for many. Whatever 🌞

Pyewhacket · 07/06/2022 11:23

I'm still waiting for summer !!!!.

mypinkslippers · 07/06/2022 11:25

I actually have always preferred when it gets darker earlier. I just find it comforting for some reason. I think it makes me feel safer.... I don't get depressed about it, I like it. When it goes dark at half 4 I like it, I don't mind being out in it either.

LuckySantangelo35 · 07/06/2022 11:28

I find exercising a lot easier in the summer too

ClaudineClare · 07/06/2022 11:31

There won't be much cosy snuggling this winter if we are all too skint to put the heating on!

tigger1001 · 07/06/2022 11:37

I think it will be the opposite- people won't put the heating on but instead will turn to blankets on the couch etc.

It's not something we normally do, but have bought blankets and hooded blankets to put away for winter so we won't have to put heating on as much

Yes this is how I feel!

Maestoso · 07/06/2022 11:59

I love the light evenings, but then I have horses and no arena or lights so need daylight to ride. I hate the dark, for me it's a waste of time. All those dark hours when with daylight I could be out enjoying myself. You can close your curtains and stay indoors any day you like if that's what you enjoy!

Bonjovispjs · 07/06/2022 11:59

Bloody hell, cold, dark nights and mornings are so miserable, we have that for months on end throughout winter, the best thing about summer is that we don't have to tolerate that, I genuinely don't understand how anyone can love them!

Zazdar · 07/06/2022 12:30

I’d be happy if was 30 degrees and light until midnight year round.

10HailMarys · 07/06/2022 12:38

I don't mind light mornings but I really dislike light evenings. I'm kind of a night owl generally and I don't like nights that feel the same as day time. I don't fully hate summer or anything, but it's definitely my least favourite season.

Struggling to see why some PPs seem so furious with the OP for not liking summer. It’s not like someone moaning about summer is going to lead to the season being formally abolished. People who hate winter moan about it all the time. People are allowed to like different things.

Agree. It's bizarre to be that cross because someone else doesn't like summer. People getting genuinely offended that someone used the word 'cosy' and begging them not to 'wish the summer away' as if that somehow means we'll all wake up tomorrow and find that it's November. Properly weird.

People are not 'miseries' for disliking summer. It's no more wrong than disliking winter. A chill in the air and a nice new winter coat really put a spring in my step, but I don't get all snappy with people who complain about the cold and say 'roll on summer' because I can just, you know, totally accept that it's a completely harmless opinion that doesn't affect me.

PickAChew · 07/06/2022 12:47

I hate heat but prefer it to the cold, dark, clammy weather we have, at the moment. A week into June and the garden chairs have only been sat on by wasps and pigeons.

Even in NE England, it doesn't get fully dark in June but we can't see the glow in the night sky for the bloody clouds, so far.

And I doubt if anyone is looking forward to their fuel bills for the coming winter.

BlueKaftan · 07/06/2022 12:54

What is this summer you speak of?

Chaoslatte · 07/06/2022 13:12

Get blackout curtains - ours are from Argos and are perfectly fine - but make sure they are pencil pleat rather than eyelet otherwise light just comes through the eyelets 😑

NightmareSlashDelightful · 07/06/2022 13:17

I prefer warm weather (not humidity) but generally, I’m much more stylishly dressed in the autumn and winter.

ChloeHel · 07/06/2022 13:23

I am with you OP. I have summer SAD. I’m currently sat in my bedroom with the curtains drawn. I hate everything about the summer and get so excited when Autumn is finally here.

I don’t enjoy hating summer in the UK and wish I could enjoy it, but my mentality won’t allow it. It’s weird because I don’t mind the nice weather if I am on holiday. Ah the human brain.

bluebull · 07/06/2022 13:26

I need to invest in some blackout curtains as well as my 3yo keeps on waking up very early and being cranky all day. Yes I also hate this aspect of summer but I love the long days.

LadyCatStark · 07/06/2022 13:29

YABU, we haven’t had a summer yet and we’re in for a very long winter!

Zazdar · 07/06/2022 12:30

I’d be happy if was 30 degrees and light until midnight year round.

So would I.

The first of those situations is why I'm quite happy in Greece at the moment.
