To say I love summer but I can't wait for the darker days

I usually love summer but the last few weeks I've found myself wishing for darker days. I wake up in the morning and the sun/ light is beaming in. I might as well be sleeping outside. I want cosy snuggles in my duvet with snow outside. But I also want to feel the sun on my face.

Summer is my least favourite season but things that make it almost enjoyable are:

  • Getting in shape before summer, keeping feet in good condition all year long

  • Comfortable sandals I can walk in

  • Great sunglasses

  • Linen and cotton clothes that I look good in whether I feel bloated or haven't shaved my legs, there are outfits I know will feel good in

  • AC or really great fan

  • Plenty of ice in the freezer

  • Light tog duvet and 100%cotton bedding

  • Blackout blinds

  • Sunscreen that doesn't sting, cause pimples or feel sticky or leave a white cast

  • Staying indoors between 11am and 3pm or if I must be out wear a wide brimmed hat and keep to the shade

  • Forgetting eye make up and focusing on lipstick more

I honestly feel suffocated when it’s so dark all of the time, it’s a horrible feeling. I feel like it’s just completely unnatural to only have sunlight for 8 hours a day.

Swayingpalmtrees · 07/06/2022 09:06

Summer is my most favourite time of the year!

The flowers are blooming everywhere, the riot of roses and peonies and the scent. Delicate butterflies hovering over lavender lined gardens.

The trees are in full bloom and the lushness of the grass and rolling fields are idyllic full of lambs. I love the lanes lined with elderflower and cowslip and the sun warming the face and bright blue skies! The lift that is bird song every morning, and not having to wear a coat. I feel lighter, happier and full of energy compared to the cold dark mornings of the winter.

Pubs with laughing friends and the sparkling sea with happy families enjoying the beach. Little tots with their tummies out running around, icecream and extra long nights full of fun. Summer evenings that are warm and barmy, and festoon lights twinkling as we stay up later than usual. The romance of sitting under the stars and not being cold. The gathering of friends, loved ones to celebrate eating outside, BBQs, rose, festivals and long for holidays to distant lands.

What is there not to love!

My heating came on yesterday. In JUNE. JUNE!!! Darker days and snow can fuck off as far as I'm concerned.

Give me light and sunshine all year round.

Cosy snuggles in my duvet....... wtf! 🤮

I know. The cosy snuggly crap begins earlier every year.

ManateeFair · 07/06/2022 10:00

I don’t like summer very much in general. I’m just much more of a winter person. I don’t mind it being light in the mornings but I don’t really enjoy light evenings at all. I’d much rather it was dark by 6pm.

Struggling to see why some PPs seem so furious with the OP for not liking summer. It’s not like someone moaning about summer is going to lead to the season being formally abolished. People who hate winter moan about it all the time. People are allowed to like different things.

@Mount2Climb

i don’t know why you’re acting like we live in the Mediterranean!

Most of that stuff would apply if we have 30 degree wall to wall sunshine every day which we absolutely do not!

Uk summers do not mean staying indoors between 11-3 and needing to forgo eye makeup!

Yanbu
The only good thing about Summer is that Autumn comes after it.
Can't wait for September...

This!

how could people not like this stuff?!

Justme10 · 07/06/2022 10:06

I completely agree with you OP!
I want the summer sun and heat during the day but I want my nights and early mornings to be dark.

It sounds lovely, but not everyone is lucky enough to live somewhere so nice and be able to do all of that. I live on a busy road, have no garden, no car and not much money. I'm not complaining - I like my life well enough - but just to point out that it's not "not liking this stuff", it's that that's an idyll that's not necessarily available to all.

It's just as romanticised as the much-derided "crunching through autumn leaves on a cold, crisp morning" and "cosy hot chocolate fairy lights winter" posts people make on these seasonal threads.

LovelyBranches · 07/06/2022 10:18

We have blocblinds -Black out blinds that are completely fitted to the window so they don’t let any light in at all. They are more expensive but the quality of sleep they allow me makes it worth it.

Ameliarosethistle · 07/06/2022 10:18

Blackout blinds sound like a good idea!

Winter will come around soon enough and a considerable percentage of the population will be unable to afford to keep their houses warm and some will have Depression from the lack of sunlight etc. Maybe just enjoy summer!

BorisJohnsonatemyhampster · 07/06/2022 10:22

Jesus H I’m in London and still had to wear my winter coat yesterday and the miseries are already complaining and using that awful twee word ‘cozy’!

Buy an eye mask and blackout blinds or move further north. Barely had 2 nice days in a row so far this year FFS.

etulosba · 07/06/2022 10:28

Am I right to assume that you don’t live in the UK?

Zazdar · 07/06/2022 10:29

Summer evenings that are warm and barmy

That’s just mad.

Sunnytwobridges · 07/06/2022 10:34

BeetyAxe · 07/06/2022 08:21

I agree with you, summer is pure hassle. The days are so bloody long and never ending, it’s exhausting.

Agreed. I can’t wait for the fall.

LuckySantangelo35 · 07/06/2022 10:35

@IllDoItButOnlyForTheAttention

lots of us (most of us actually) don’t have trees and birds and fields etc on their doorstep. But nothing stoping you taking a trip out on a weekend to a country park or whatever and enjoying these things

@Justme10

Why?!

dark nights are such a ball ache

It’s not as nice going for a night out or to the pub or whatever in the cold and dark

Justme10 · 07/06/2022 10:42

@LuckySantangelo35

I just feel like nighttime should be dark, I hate the days feeling never ending because it's still light at 10pm.

I like sunny summer days but I am more of a winter person so maybe that's why Grin

surely you wanna make the most of your days not shorten them!?

Justme10 · 07/06/2022 10:49

But the day doesn't end just because it got dark.
I can still see friends or go to the pub and it would be dark like nighttime should be Grin

@yetanothernamechange90

You are being VERY unreasonable

buy some better curtains

we’ve had an absolutely shit summer so far - cold, grey, raining. Don’t wish the summer away. We have far too many short dark days as it is.

Exactly! We have blackout curtains and my bedroom is pitch black once them and blinds are closed.

Summer in England lasts about 3 weeks and we have had 1 nice day where I am so far. So YABU - you have most of the year to be to grey and dark

Stroopwaffels · 07/06/2022 10:59

Summer in England lasts about 3 weeks

Summer in Scotland is 3 days, if you're lucky. That's why the "cosy snuggles with my famalam" brigade grind my gears SO MUCH. They have the overwhelming majority of the year for their twee cosy shite. Yet pop on here complaining about light streaming in and dark nights when their problem is easy to solve with an eye mask or blackout blinds.

Lack of natural daylight in winter is not such an easy fix, is it?
