To feel uncomfortable about well-off women with new Ukrainian women cleaners?

A lot of my well off acquaintances have new Ukrainian female cleaners and I feel very uncomfortable about it. They talk quite openly about wanting to support the women but have made no attempt to understand the women’s professional backgrounds and I feel it’s both virtue signalling but also somewhat inappropriate. I know the government has put nothing in place to support these trained professionals back into work but to me this smacks of virtue signalling while using vulnerable people as cash in hand staff. AIBU?

Yes the government can pay for English lessons for phillipino nurses when they need to why not Ukrainian professionals?

Stop with your middle class angst! What's wrong with cleaning, unless of course you think you are better than a cleaner which most decent people don't so there isn't a problem.

Middle class handwringing over a well qualified person having to clean?
Clearly no one is forced to clean, should they not want to.
Probably quite a good hourly rate, too.
The handwringing implies that the handwringer does have indeed perceive Cleaning to be low status.

Totally agree, apart from I wouldn't trust Boris Johnson to do my vacuuming. I don't think he would know how to work a vacuum cleaner!

Bojo would likely attach the nozzle to his Person, and forget to hoover under the sofa

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with being a cleaner. I am uncomfortable when people pay cash in hand for this work. And I am uncomfortable that several of my friends have told me that they are doing this to help refugees - if they really wanted to help shouldn’t they be paying them through an agency or similar?

Do you realise that cleaners who work for agencies generally get minimum wage from the agency. Independent cleaners make way more. I feel you are back tracking to try to justify your position but I think your position is flawed. If people were paying a pittance or I'll treating the women then yes I would agree with you. But paying standard rates to do a job is not unethical or taking advantage

My village has three Ukrainian refugee families. I recently put an ad up on Facebook asking for someone to feed my cats while I was away. I usually get a local teen offering so pay teen rates. I was contacted by all 3 Ukrainian women and 4 teens. 1 Ukrainian woman wasn't happy with the rate and wanted more but I couldn't afford more so we agreed amicably not to take it forward. Another offered to do it for free because she misses her cats. I gave the job to her but I've paid her the usual teen rate. I don't think these things are black and white.
