Why do you love The Royal Family?

pedropony76 · 05/06/2022 18:39

I previously posted this on The Royal Family board but only received one response so wanted to post here for traffic.

For those that love The Queen & The Royal Family, can you actually explain why?

I often see MNetters saying ‘Oh I love The Queen, I love this member and that member’ but no one ever says why. I came across the video of Stacey Solomon saying she doesn’t get why the country is so obsessed with this family as it could be any one of us born into royalty and I totally agree.

For me, when I think of The Royal Family, I instantly think of colonialism and how many of the jewels on the Queen’s crown has been stolen from different countries. I understand not everyone thinks like this but why do some love the members of this establishment as if they’ve done anything to better your life? I’d love to hear people’s views. I’ve tried to have this conversation in real life but everyone I know couldn’t care less about The Royal Family so I’m none the wiser.

Here’s the Stacey Solomon clip for any who haven’t seen it before

I can't usually be assed with the royal family as people but do think that constitutional monarchy as a concept is a good thing and something we should always keep.

Dead inside and cynical as I am, I sobbed last night watching the Queen and Paddington bear! I think it's because she has transcended being human and is now our nations moral compass, era-defining bookend and common to us all. Anneka Rice was on radio 4 this mor ING talking about how, in the absence of another moral leader, we are clinging to the Queen like a limpet because we like what she stands for - humility, dignity, service and a quiet humour.

Thats what I think, anyway.

Ohhelpicantthinkofaname · 05/06/2022 18:45

i wouldn’t say I love them but, do you really want president Boris?

I’ll choose old queenie over that any day.

Joystir59 · 05/06/2022 18:46

I don't love any of them, but I am fascinated by the ceremonial rituals of royalty.

Schwarz · 05/06/2022 18:47

I quite like the queen - I think she's a fab example of duty and service to the country, I think she represents us as a nation well at other events and occasions with foreign dignitaries etc. I do think the royals are lucky in some ways, but also not in others. I'm happy we have a royal family rather than a constitution and president style situation! Other people disagree but I don't think it's worth the arguments it tends to start (they often get a bit nasty too I think) when people start debating the royals.

UrsulaPandress · 05/06/2022 18:50

I haven’t watched your clip as I couldn’t give a rats arse what she thinks.

I don’t ‘love’ the Royal Family. I love history and continuity. Sir Keir Starmer wrote a great piece in the Telegraph the other day which perfectly encapsulated my feelings.

HTH

goady much?

MindYourHeadDoggy · 05/06/2022 18:53

I love the fact that I’m not a forelock-tugging Brit who has to pay for them.

nokidshere · 05/06/2022 18:54

I'm ambivalent about the royals generally and I don't know anyone who is 'obsessed' by them unless you count the gutter press.

Why does it matter if some people love them and some don't? You could say the same about everyone in the public eye really, they will always have their fair share of lovers/haters.

And lord knows the British public are largely stupid, if they had to vote for a replacement we'd probably end up with Mr Tumble or someone similar as president 😉

Topgub · 05/06/2022 18:57

I dont.

I dont understand why anyone does.

They've done nothing to deserve their wealth or privilege

I resent having to pay for them

megacat · 05/06/2022 19:00

I find something quite comforting about the Queen and her presence through my entire lifetime. Each Christmas Day speech, addressing the nation during covid and other uncertain times, it's a bit like having your grandma there to tell you it'll all be ok. I know that sounds silly but that's my personal take.

I don't think I'll feel the same when Charles takes the throne. I'm not a huge royalist by any stretch but I enjoy the pomp and ceremony and events such as this weekend.

gotthis · 05/06/2022 19:02

I am disinterested in the RF as a concept, but I will admit to a real affection for Diana. I remember the AIDS panic and homophobia as a teenager in the 80s. When the clip of her holding a dying AIDS patient's hand came out it really changed attitudes and compassion. There are also really touching clips of her interaction with sick children, or amputees. I know she was also from a privileged background, but I don't think her compassion could be faked.

TheHateIsNotGood · 05/06/2022 19:03

I really like and respect Older Ladies that wear hats and yellow suits when many are keen to be uncheerful.

Actually I really like anyone, young or old, man/gent, lady or whatever, wearing whatever colour clothes they like whilst also wearing a hat.

Paticularly when so many are sharpening their claws against whatever peeves them but chooses to rail against The Hat People instead.

Topgub · 05/06/2022 19:05

People keep saying the queen has done so much for us.

What?

What has she actually done for her 'subjects'

QuizzlyBear · 05/06/2022 19:05

I agree. I just don't get it. I think that the institution just continues the British mentality of forelock tugging and of believing that those with posh accents are somehow our 'betters' (by virtue of their birth and inherited wealth).

It's how we ended up with Boris, after all.

TheHateIsNotGood · 05/06/2022 19:05

Darbs76 · 05/06/2022 19:06

I’m not a mad royalist but I do like the royal family. I just love the pomp and pageantry, I love London and I adore St James park which sits in front of the palace. I had an amazing night last night on the mall and I agree with poster who said there’s something comforting about the Queen being there.

DemBonesDemBones · 05/06/2022 19:07

Well I like the Queen better than I like Stacey Solomon 🤷‍♀️

oviraptor21 · 05/06/2022 19:07

I don't love them.
I do think they are a good thing and have yet to see anything that would change my mind.

Rosieposy89 · 05/06/2022 19:08

I don't, they are parasites.

DaykinD · 05/06/2022 19:08

You do know it’s not president boris or the queen? Also how lucky you are it’s not king Andrew coming next? If he was born first he’d be king regardless!

HazelNutterButter · 05/06/2022 19:08

I don’t. They’re enormously privileged for no real reason or purpose. It’s all theatrical.

I can’t stand the bowing and deference that isn’t earned.

People always quote the tourism value of having a royal family, but people would still flock to the old palaces for the history even if the monarchy was abolished.

MayBeee · 05/06/2022 19:08

I think the UK does pomp and pageantry the best , and that the royal family are at the heart of it .
We are lucky that the country has wonderful ancient buildings that have largely been looked after and our history goes back a long way.
Do I love the royal family ? No .

Trainbear · 05/06/2022 19:08

Duty. Unswerving loyalty, reliability and the ability to say lots, by not saying a lot.

Badger1970 · 05/06/2022 19:10

I love the tradition, the history, the prestige. The Palaces, the jewellery, costumes. When you watch events like Trooping the Colour, you realise that we're exceptionally good at pomp and circumstance in the UK.

Going forwards, I think future Royals have a fine line to tread between duty and celebrity. It would be such a shame to lose something that as a country we do well, and it shows that billions have watched the Jubilee events over the world.

somewhereovertherain · 05/06/2022 19:11

I don’t, a good symbol of everything that is wrong with this country.

Pretty good at rape and murder to get that wealth
