To be annoyed she fed us out of date mince?

Just had tea at my friend's. She cooked a pasta bake which was nice, then on the way out (leaving through the kitchen) she picked the mince packet up and laughed. Asked what was funny and she said "oh, this should have been used yesterday!"

I'm a bit annoyed with her, because I've been having stomach troubles (currently being investigated for an ulcer and IBS type symptoms) and as a result I'm pretty careful with what I eat. I'd never use mince past its date either.

Have loads planned for the next few days too so I'm really hoping it doesn't disagree with me!

If you have Time BS could it be the pasta? Or the onions and garlic? DD has severe IBS and these things are disastrous for her.

Pasta is fine for me to eat usually. No garlic or onions in it!

I'm guessing I feel crap due to a combination of the mince/fat and the tomato (which I've been okay with in small amounts 😣)

So why don't you tell people your dietary needs?

If you read the thread, you'll find out that my friend knows my dietary requirements - I don't eat mince in general much so didn't think it would be a problem.

What was actually in it?
If it was just mince and tomatoes I'd end that friendship...

No, it was nice 😂

Mince, peppers, mushrooms, pasta, cheesy breadcrumbs and the (herby) tomato sauce.

@QuestionableMouse - as I said yesterday, I have IBS, and my gastroenterologist has put me on cholestagel tablets, to ease the diarrhoea.

According to him, people with IBS don’t reabsorb the bile acid secreted by their liver, that enters the small intestine, to aid digestion there. In most people, this acid is reabsorbed by the small intestine, and never makes it any further, but in those of us with IBS, it doesn’t get reabsorbed, and when it reaches the large intestine, it causes irritation and inflammation, which causes the diarrhoea.

The cholestagel binds to the bile acid, and stops it causing irritation in the large intestine. I’ve been on it for about three years now and, whilst I do still get some diarrhoea, it is so much better than it used to be. Maybe your GP would prescribe it for you, so you could see if it helps at all?

@QuestionableMouse can't see where you mention you don't eat mince much? Although much doesn't mean you can't tolerate it.

Seriously it’s 1 day, you’ll be fine

Thank you, will ask about that!

It's reflux/heartburn/GERD that's causing me the most problems at the moment. I'm on 40mg of omprezalone already and I'm usually very careful about what I eat. Friend offered to cook and it's been an age since I had something I didn't make myself. Seriously regretting it now but at least I know to avoid mince and any tomato based stuff (and probably peppers, though I don't tend to eat them anyway)

If she'd said it should have been used two weeks ago I'd have agreed - but 'yesterday' that is a total overreaction!!!

You are being beyond unreasonable. You can tell immediately if meat is off. None of my products from the butcher's come with a use by or best before date. Neither does my fish from the fishmonger. You might want to educate yourself on how to tell if food is off. You'll stop a lot of wastage which is a massive problem in the world.

Please read the full thread. I've explained a few times that my own food waste is very minimal and I'm not responsible for any food waste but my own so I'm not getting guilt tripped there.

YABU about the best by date. You would definitely smell & taste if it was off.

It sounds like your anxiety is contributing to your issues - mind & gut connection is real.

DelilahBucket · 05/06/2022 22:28

I did read the full thread. Not sure why you think you are being guilt tripped by a stranger on the internet. You picked out bits from my post and ignored the rest. People have said you are being unreasonable. You've insisted you weren't. So why ask in the first place if you know you are right? And yes, snubbing meat one day past its use by is you contributing to food wastage because you are projecting your fears onto others.
