To be annoyed she fed us out of date mince?

Just had tea at my friend's. She cooked a pasta bake which was nice, then on the way out (leaving through the kitchen) she picked the mince packet up and laughed. Asked what was funny and she said "oh, this should have been used yesterday!"

I'm a bit annoyed with her, because I've been having stomach troubles (currently being investigated for an ulcer and IBS type symptoms) and as a result I'm pretty careful with what I eat. I'd never use mince past its date either.

Have loads planned for the next few days too so I'm really hoping it doesn't disagree with me!

Pretty sure it wouldn’t have been nice if the mince had gone off.

Cheesechips · 04/06/2022 19:45

Ridiculous. As long as it smells and looks ok it's fine. It's not like it's a week out of date.

ihatethefuckingmuffin · 04/06/2022 19:46

Haha I used to repackage foods with dates on because of an anal ex. Or buy products without the excess packaging and really freak him out.

toogoodforthisworld · 04/06/2022 19:52

It's a best before date. Most things are good after that. Like another poster says- it's doesn't suddenly go poisonous or bad at midnight.
Highly unlikely this would give you a bad tummy - but stressing about is probably will.. x

YANBU. You don’t feed your guests out of date food, especially meat.

Yuck.

Oh give over.

QuestionableMouse · 04/06/2022 19:55

I'm sorry but all of you saying if it smells fine, it's safe - that's not true. Or at least that's what we were taught on the food safety/hygiene course I did, which is why I worry.

@ihatethefuckingmuffin pasta is one of my safe foods. Worst things are anything acidic, apple, and dark greens like broccoli. And this is the first meal I've had in ages that I haven't cooked for myself!

@Cherryblossoms85 yep, 40mg a day. It's helping, still have days where I'm just not right though! It's awful and I'm sorry you're going through it too. Did you have Covid before your symptoms started? That's what seems to have triggered mine.

Mince is one of those few things that small so obviously off if it is.

I've thrown mince a day within date before of of its smell.

I've used mince 2 days past it's date before because it had shorter date than I realised and didn't occur to me that 3 days after a delivery it would be out of date so didn't check!

ShirleyPhallus · 04/06/2022 19:57

You literally said yourself it tastes nice. If mince is off it tastes absolutely rank.

If you have stomach issues you should make it known to the host beforehand so they can cater appropriately. Not really fair to have issues they’re not aware of then complain afterwards.

She is 100% aware of my health problems!

Best Before : date flexible. If it smells OK it's fine to use as long as its cooked to 65 degrees or above (75 if reheating)

Use By : exactly as it says. Even only a couple of days over, bin it

You will be fine

Sweepingeyelashes · 04/06/2022 20:00

Well you're probably going to be fine. That said though it's poor to serve out of date food to guests and if you suddenly notice you keep your mouth shut if they've eaten it. That said, mince will go off faster than other meat because of all the cut surfaces right through the mince compared to say a piece of steak.

ChagSameachDoreen · 04/06/2022 20:01

Grow up.

Cherryblossoms85 · 04/06/2022 20:03

@QuestionableMouse I've not had COVID to my knowledge. It's just been getting steadily worse since about November. I'm hoping for some sort of review when I go back at the end of the month, I'll happily pay for private.

coffeecupsandfairylights · 04/06/2022 20:04

You'd know if it was off - it would absolutely stink.

Honestly, you'll be absolutely fine. Stop worrying!

QuestionableMouse · 04/06/2022 20:05

It was a use by date, not best before. 😔

I'm not precious - will (or did, before the plague) eat stuff past the best before but I do stick to use by dates pretty strictly. If I have something that's going to go over before it'd get used, I'd chuck it in the freezer then use it from frozen.

coffeecupsandfairylights · 04/06/2022 20:07

It was a use by date, not best before.

It's irrelevant - how do you think the manufacturers know when food will go off in advance, to the precise day? They don't - it's just guesswork.

It's miserable, isn't it? My appointment should have been this week but has been pushed back again as the doc is off sick. 😔

How do you think people coped before dates on food were a thing? You sniff it, it’s fine, you use it.

FlipFlopShopInHawaii · 04/06/2022 20:11

Do you think the mince knows what date it is, and once it hits midnight it goes off?
Cinderellamince?? 😜

Seriously, you'll be fine. It wasn't a week out of date. Like a PP said, most likely any tummy troubles will be caused by anxiety from worrying about it.

BarbaraofSeville · 04/06/2022 20:16

Food hygiene rules taught on courses are ridiculously conservative. It's really not the case that food that is one day past the date will cause issues. It almost certainly won't.

If the meat looked, tasted and smelled OK, then it was OK.

coffeecupsandfairylights · 04/06/2022 20:20

Food safety courses are about cooking in a professional kitchen, though - the standards have to be higher and way more strict than for home cooking.

rnsaslkih · 04/06/2022 19:39

It's likely that it was fine and you will be fine, but I do think it's rude to serve that up to a guest. OK to do it in your own house, but I wouldn't give it to someone else, especially without informing them first.

She didn’t realise until after, so how is it rude?

Vikinga · 04/06/2022 20:24

I always smell and look at food before cooking. But she didn't realise and I'm sure you'll be fine.

Bobbins36 · 04/06/2022 20:24

OMG 1 Day? A&E now 😂😂😂😂

diamondpony80 · 04/06/2022 20:26

If it tasted nice then it was fine. As a host I would be a lot more careful about what I feed my guests though.
