To be annoyed she fed us out of date mince?

Just had tea at my friend's. She cooked a pasta bake which was nice, then on the way out (leaving through the kitchen) she picked the mince packet up and laughed. Asked what was funny and she said "oh, this should have been used yesterday!"

I'm a bit annoyed with her, because I've been having stomach troubles (currently being investigated for an ulcer and IBS type symptoms) and as a result I'm pretty careful with what I eat. I'd never use mince past its date either.

Have loads planned for the next few days too so I'm really hoping it doesn't disagree with me!

I'm sorry but all of you saying if it smells fine, it's safe - that's not true. Or at least that's what we were taught on the food safety/hygiene course I did, which is why I worry.

@ihatethefuckingmuffin pasta is one of my safe foods. Worst things are anything acidic, apple, and dark greens like broccoli. And this is the first meal I've had in ages that I haven't cooked for myself!

@Cherryblossoms85 yep, 40mg a day. It's helping, still have days where I'm just not right though! It's awful and I'm sorry you're going through it too. Did you have Covid before your symptoms started? That's what seems to have triggered mine.

So the pasta bake didn’t include any tomatoes?

easyday · 04/06/2022 20:32

Goodness I feed my kids out of date food all the time! If it looks snd smells ok no problem. I would be more circumspect with pork and chicken maybe.

ProclivityForPyrotechnics · 04/06/2022 20:37

@QuestionableMouse next time you should definitely inspect all of her food just in case she tries to poison you?

Giveitall · 04/06/2022 20:38

I’ve eaten yoghurt 3 months out of date.
Tasted just as good, no ill affects.
Those dates are ridiculous half the time.
If it smells ok , use it.
if it tastes ok, eat it.
Too much global food waste. Time to get sensible.

ProclivityForPyrotechnics · 04/06/2022 20:39

@QuestionableMouse or never leave your house to go to hers ever again, invite her to yours forever onward from now on or just end the friendship right now.. Hmm

Blackmagicqueen · 04/06/2022 20:41

It’s 1 day and not a week. I always think dates can be wrong anyway as I’ve had meat in date that’s been off before and vice versa, it is the smell that gives it away. If your friend didn’t notice it must have looked and smelt fine. Honestly if anything affects your stomach op it’ll be anxiety, you need to try and relax 😀

justasking111 · 04/06/2022 20:44

I'd lay off the tomatoes with your tum my guts are like yours it's miserable gets very boring

Flump1234 · 04/06/2022 20:44

Use-by dates are one of the biggest cons of our age. People need to learn to use their eyes and nose again, as we did for centuries.

MountainClimber22 · 04/06/2022 20:45

Yabu it would be fine.

MountainClimber22 · 04/06/2022 20:47

I find meat in my fridge all the time a few days passed its sell by date and cook it. Would be a waste to chuck it and touch wood, I've never been ill from it.

BingeBitch · 04/06/2022 20:49

It’s not like she did it deliberately is it? She noticed after she used it. She made a mistake, let it go.

IvorCutler · 04/06/2022 20:52

You’ll be grand! She’ll have known if it was off when she opened it/cooked with it!

mycatisannoying · 04/06/2022 20:53

As others have said, it'll be fine.

BringBackCoffeeCreams · 04/06/2022 20:54

Do you think it turns bad on the stroke of midnight of its use by date? You're being ridiculous.

Weirdly, as long as they're very well cooked, a small amount of tomato is fine. I couldn't eat loads but a bit is okay so far.

God you sound neurotic. One day over 🙄.

Opus17 · 04/06/2022 20:57

🙄

rocketfromthecrypt · 04/06/2022 20:58

It was, what, 17 or 18 hours 'out of date'? It will absolutely not cause you a single problem. If you decide that you're going to be ill and obsess over it then you'll probably drive yourself into a state of feeling unwell, but that's nothing to do with the mince.

Wolfiefan · 04/06/2022 21:00

Grim!
Best before dates are very much just a guide. I would not use meat last use by date. Freeze if necessary.
And no. You can’t smell everything that could make you ill. Of course you can smell if it’s rotten but that’s all.
I wouldn’t eat there again.

Dunnoburt · 04/06/2022 21:01

Totally unreasonable!.......id give it at least 5 days before I tested it on the cat!

ouch321 · 04/06/2022 21:05

If it was a week I'd understand why you might be a tad wary but a day is 99% fine.

onlythreenow · 04/06/2022 21:06

When I was young we didn't have dates on food. Somehow we managed!

Frazzledmummy123 · 04/06/2022 21:07

I would say you'll be fine if it tasted and smelled fine. Though I don't know why your friend pointed it out. If I had accidentally served guests food that I noticed was a day out of date, I'd keep quiet.

Ahurricaneofjacarandas · 04/06/2022 21:07

We accidentally fed our entire family chocolate spread that was almost a year out of date on pancake day.... nobody has died yet 🤣🙈

lalaley · 04/06/2022 21:08

What the hell? I can't believe people's replies? I'd always be cautious with meat especially and certainly wouldn't dream of feeding out of date food to guests!
