To be annoyed she fed us out of date mince?

Just had tea at my friend's. She cooked a pasta bake which was nice, then on the way out (leaving through the kitchen) she picked the mince packet up and laughed. Asked what was funny and she said "oh, this should have been used yesterday!"

I'm a bit annoyed with her, because I've been having stomach troubles (currently being investigated for an ulcer and IBS type symptoms) and as a result I'm pretty careful with what I eat. I'd never use mince past its date either.

Have loads planned for the next few days too so I'm really hoping it doesn't disagree with me!

Fgs op, get a grip

Tee20x · 04/06/2022 21:11

Doubt the bacteria know the difference between a couple of hours - would you have eaten it if it was cooked at 23.59 the day before? Stop worrying!!

SmartCarDriver · 04/06/2022 21:13

I'll say Hi now, it's probably your last night .....

Such a shame, death by mince that's 12 hours past sell by date...

waitingpatientlyforspring · 04/06/2022 21:14

🤣 food doesn't know dates. The food industry adds a safety barrier in so one day? You will be fine!

Easilystartled · 04/06/2022 21:14

You’ll be fine op. Bb dates are always waaaay on the conservative side. If it looks ok and smells ok, it’s ok.

Theredfoxfliesatmidnight · 04/06/2022 21:20

I think the words you were looking for were "Thankyou for cooking me dinner"

bellac11 · 04/06/2022 21:22

We bought some salami yesterday, use by date is next week, opened it and it smelt very obviously not right. Threw it away

I eat things weeks and weeks past their use by date if they are ok.

OH on the other hand is a nightmare, everything is 'rotten', 'stale', 'mouldy', even when they are none of these things.

I'd love for use by dates to be removed.

Theluggage15 · 04/06/2022 21:23

What on earth do use by dates have to do with your stomach issues? If food’s off it’s off. It’s appalling that this country has so much food waste, good food being chucked out because of ignorant idiots with no common sense.

lap90 · 04/06/2022 21:23

Nothing to be annoyed about it's perfectly fine.

Fatarseflanagan09 · 04/06/2022 21:24

I remember my granny had a meat save, a cabinet with a mesh door to keep flies away, it was kept in a cold pantry, obviously it wasn’t left there for days on end but we’re still here to tell the tale.

Chasingclouds100 · 04/06/2022 21:25

I would react exactly the same as you to be fair - I am very careful with out of date meat, and the thought turns my stomach…but I’m sure all is ok so please try not to worry xx

The empty packet being left out for so long is more likely to do you any harm than the meat that looked, smelt and tasted fine... and the packets not going to do you any harm at all.

chunkymandarincoulis · 04/06/2022 21:36

MInce is one of the few things that I wouldn't eat once it is out of date.

I personally don't have much food waste at all. I freeze a lot of stuff so it doesn't go to waste.

I'm wary because I've been sick a lot. I really don't want a stomach bug.

SmartCarDriver · 04/06/2022 21:52

@QuestionableMouse you won't get a stomach bug from one day out of date food, what makes you think you will?

maddiemookins16mum · 04/06/2022 21:52

YABU. However who leaves the mince wrapper out on the side for so long after opening it.

Mariposista · 04/06/2022 21:56

One week over, you would have a point. One day? In other words a few hours - totally ridiculous

SallyWD · 04/06/2022 21:58

I often eat things several days past their sell by date. If it smells and tastes OK you're fine! One day is nothing. Be thankful that she cooked you a nice meal.

NorthernLights5 · 04/06/2022 21:58

She would have smelled it was off on opening the pack. I once opened a pack of mince, well within date and it smelled awful with an almost sweet smell to it.

Forgothowmuchlhatehomeschoolin · 04/06/2022 21:59

Used to work in a butchers and if meat looked OK, we didn't take any notice of the date on it.
Can't imagine this will be an issue and l feed out of date food all the time to dh and dd.

Discovereads · 04/06/2022 22:00

YANBU OP
And for all those saying it’s fine if it looks and smells fine are wrong. Food can look and smell fine but still be off enough to make you very sick. In fact the majority of people sick in hospital with food poisoning will say “but it didn’t look or smell off….”

Theluggage15 · 04/06/2022 22:07

You’re talking nonsense about meat @Discovereads if raw meat is off it’s obvious to anyone with a brain.

Herejustforthisone · 04/06/2022 22:31

monicagellerbing · 04/06/2022 19:35

Mince one day past it's date is absolutely fine, you're being slightly ridiculous

I agree. But I’d omit ‘slightly’.

Squishymallow · 04/06/2022 22:40

I’m paranoid to the point of obsession with chicken but even I’d eat mince one day out of date.
