To buy a sportscar?

SomersetDreams · 04/06/2022 06:22

In these tough times, is it ok to buy a sportscar. I was never a fan of cars/ particularly materialistic but one has caught my eye and it would be for a special occasion/ in honor of a family member (- trying to find reasons to justify purchase :) )

Its also an investment ...

Would you spend on this? (it was love at first sight!!)

I treated myself last year to a sports car. Always wanted one so pleased with it. BUT I have a problem dh has decided it definitely suits him better now I hardly get to use it😫I suggest you hide the keys op. And enjoy it my lovely

MrsTerryPratchett · 04/06/2022 17:28

Depends what it is.

Can you find an 'investment in you' which doesn't fuck the environment for everyone else?

🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄 speak to Putin, The USA in general and many other massive countries before you judge our person on buying a nice car. What a twatty and ridiculous comment.

If it’s a V8 supercharged, I assume it’s a Jaguar F- Type, so lucky you! They are such beautiful cars.

I’ve had a few interesting cars down the years (Mazda MX-5, BMW Z4, Mercedes SLK) and I currently drive a BMW M240i Convertible. All very different, all great fun. The SLK was probably my favourite, a superbly balanced combination of performance, comfort, style & a surprising degree of usability (by 2 seater standards, obv…)

I have driven the 3 litre V6 F-Type, and that had plenty of performance, so goodness knows what the supercharged V8 must be like. A handful, I imagine…

Enjoy it!

Do it. Why would it be unreasonable? My little MG was such fun. I loved having it.

Alwaysmovingforward, ironic name for someone stuck in the old ways of transport

Good point.
I have horses as well, so maybe name change to alwaysstuckinthepast Confused

Had this discussion with hubby about 6 years ago. He'd always wanted one, coming up for retirement etc etc. I thought long waiting list so he went to 'look' and came home with one. I can't get in or out. It is so uncomfortable, even my son sighs with relief at not having a numb bum if he has been out in it. He wrapped that one round a roundabout. Bought another. Now he's just recueved a 6 month ban. Only get one if you can control yourself.

Theoldwrinkley · 04/06/2022 18:27

It won't be an investment.

Orpheline · 04/06/2022 18:28

Buy it!! I still have mine 30 years later. Had no idea it would become a classic

SomersetDreams · 04/06/2022 19:24

Just go to local dealerships and test drive what takes your fancy and you wil soon find your dream car :)

Ignore the killjoys.

I love my sports car and enjoy driving it.

It gives me a lot of pleasure and also to other car enthusiasts when I offer to take them for a ride in it.

I've done a number of "chauffeuring" duties for friends to take their children to prom "in style" and used it to raise money for charity by offering rides to car enthusiasts and delivering the bride/groom to their wedding for a donation etc.

TheOnlyAletheia · 04/06/2022 21:09

I bought my MX5 when I divorced. ExDH always had the best cars when we were married. I got the practical car to transport children and dogs in. He was quite cross when I bought it and asked why I had bought such a “stupid car”. Do it do it do it 🤣

BobbinThreadbare123 · 04/06/2022 21:18

Buy it buy it buy it! I have a stupid little rocket of a car. I love it. I have no children so I guess that negates it, for the po-faced among us. I feel joy every time I start the engine. I do get ~45 mpg from mine if I am nice on the roads, which it's not specifically designed for 😆

Shade17 · 04/06/2022 21:22

I have 10 cars currently, mostly modernish classics from the 90s and 00s and they are definitely appreciating investments! You sound like you’re buying something newer so may experience some depreciation but fuck it! Buy it and drive it hard!

Escarpahell · 04/06/2022 21:29

Ah, this thread brings back memories! I bought my "midlife crisis" car back in 2016. A 4.5L V8 Porsche Cayenne S.

Fucking loved that car, even though it was ugly, old (2005), thirsty and cost a fortune to keep it sweet. Hmmm.

Maybe I identified with it???

Sadly had to sell in 2020 so that we could eat but I don't regret having it, enjoying it and regularly breaking the law in it.

OnceAgainWithFeeling · 04/06/2022 21:35

Arbeity · 04/06/2022 06:42

Get it! But you definitely won't make any money on it, so don't think of it as a financial investment. What are you thinking of getting?

The sports car I bought 16 years ago is now extremely rare and worth about twice what I paid for it.

Guy in my street bought a brand new Porsche earlier this year. Dealership just begged him to sell it back to them for £15k more than he paid for it.

Can be fun and an investment, either short or long term.

XenoBitch · 04/06/2022 21:50

Ignore the killjoys, and enjoy your car.

BobbinThreadbare123 · 04/06/2022 22:01

Enjoy this song - Fuel by Metallica

While you burn all that petrol 😁

Momicrone · 04/06/2022 22:23

Yeah ignore the kill joys, fuck the planet, we all need to drive more

MiniTheMinx · 04/06/2022 23:24

I had a 1997 BMW 3 series, 3L convertible. She was beautiful. I've now got a boring but reliable Saab convertible that apparently is going up in value. Its boring though. My dream would be a 70s fast back Mustang or this
gmauthority.com/blog/2020/01/1970-pontiac-firebird-trans-am-listed-for-250k/amp/ 😀if only I could afford it.

I say go for it, much better than a wardrobe full of poncy handbags.

Blossomtoes · 04/06/2022 23:27

My bloke had a Saab convertible. It was like driving a sofa. I hated it.

Sunbird24 · 04/06/2022 23:32

I have a silly little sports car, I love driving it, and it does significantly better mpg than some of the bangers driven by colleagues.

OnceAgainWithFeeling · 04/06/2022 23:35

Momicrone · 04/06/2022 22:23

Yeah ignore the kill joys, fuck the planet, we all need to drive more

building supposed eco-cars are pretty catastrophic environmentally, you know.

SomersetDreams · 05/06/2022 05:52

Fuk it! Buy it and drive it hard!

Yes m'aaam absolutely I will!
