To buy a sportscar?

SomersetDreams · 04/06/2022 06:22

In these tough times, is it ok to buy a sportscar. I was never a fan of cars/ particularly materialistic but one has caught my eye and it would be for a special occasion/ in honor of a family member (- trying to find reasons to justify purchase :) )

Its also an investment ...

Would you spend on this? (it was love at first sight!!)

You love it, you can afford it, it will bring you joy - buy it OP and have a fantastic time!

Couldn't agree more!!

I'd say no for environmental reasons. If you have the money, spend it on something in the house.

Yes because most stuff in our homes doesn't require oil to produce and is then shipped halfway around the globe...

CockSpadget · 04/06/2022 09:02

Absolutely not BU. If you can afford it, and it will bring you joy, crack on!

alwaysmovingforwards · 04/06/2022 09:05

Honaloulou · 04/06/2022 06:35

Can you find an 'investment in you' which doesn't fuck the environment for everyone else?

The most damaging thing anyone can do for the environment is have kids...

Even having a pet causes more Co2 than a car.

Branster · 04/06/2022 09:06

Why are you trying to justify your own purchase OP?
If you really want it, can afford it and you will use it with great joy then buy the car for yourself.
Forget the environment and times of need for others. It's your own money and your car. Nobody has anything to do with it.

v8 and supercharged :)

Lovely.
Sounds like a Mercedes?
Or even an Aston Martin??

BathshebaAndGabriel · 04/06/2022 09:12

Do it!

What is it??

I would sell my Granny (if either were still alive) for a DS.

BathshebaAndGabriel · 04/06/2022 09:15

And my beautiful teenage boy (who is a man of few words) has said “Mum, I’ll build you a 911 when I get some money”

Can you post a picture of car??

SomersetDreams · 04/06/2022 09:22

Maybe start the Mumsnet Super Sports car Ladies Club?? lol

I did exactly this last year with what is fairly desirable model of car. Life is too short and uncertain so I scratched that itch. I love it and it has gone up in value by about 10% so it’s effectively free motoring (to be fair, many secondhand cars have gone up in value). It’s a very reliable model, has got long service intervals but tyres cost a fortune. If it’s a Porsche, do it. If it’s Italian, probably best not to!

I had a Porsche Boxster and loved it . Never had Italian though .

heavyistheheed · 04/06/2022 10:27

At the moment no one can say if it's an investment or not.

DH bought a fancy car two years ago, put 20k miles on it and last week sold it for 15k more than what he paid for it. Car market at the moment is mad!

I say buy the car Smile

VintageCarClubber · 04/06/2022 13:07

If you can afford to buy and maintain the car without becoming destitute, buy the car and enjoy it.

Clearly I'm biased, because I have a classic mini and I have used it on charity fundraising events to raise money for charity.

Whatever you end up buying, I'd bet there's a whole community of car lovers just waiting to welcome you to their group. I've made so many friends as a result of my love of this little car.

Ignore the joy suckers and do what you love.

Momicrone · 04/06/2022 13:13

Alwaysmovingforward, ironic name for someone stuck in the old ways of transport

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 04/06/2022 13:17

I've got one. I'm disabled and sooner or later I'm going to need a boxy wheelchair transporter. Until then this gives me brief times where my disability is irrelevant.

Absolutely I often think those that complain about co2 from car ownership would be better off directing their ire at the conception, larger families or pet corner sections. It dwarfs into insignificance compared to that.

Momicrone · 04/06/2022 13:27

And what about people who don't have kids, cars or pets?

That’s a good point about cars being a ‘leveller’
I remember being weeks overdue with dd, looking muted mobility and loving being a functional adult same as everyone else ‘behind the wheel’
Go for it OP. I came on to slate you but it sounds reasonable.

bluehaze · 04/06/2022 13:33

I’m thinking of doing the same but don’t know where to start. Any advice woukd be great.
go for it OP! Hope it brings happiness 😊

absolutelynotfabulous · 04/06/2022 13:33

C'mon @SomersetDreams we HAVE to know what this car is. Not a TVR is it? Big throbby purry V8 engine?

When I had a sports car my cousin was visiting and she was due to have a hip replacement in the very near future. She came in the car with me so that OH could travel with her daughter to give directions, my cousin said it was the most comfortable car she'd ever sat it! Because the seats are so low and one's legs are straight out rather than bent at the knee it made it better for her. I would drive 4 hours across country and arrive feeling great whereas in the family saloon I'd arrive feeling very stiff.
Go for it!

Lottieskeeper · 04/06/2022 13:45

Go for it @SomersetDreams you only live once.

You had me at V8, but supercharged too. Go on tell us what is this little beauty.

rosyvalentine · 04/06/2022 13:48

I say go for it OP! I love sports cars and had one myself until DS arrived. My money is on a Jaguar F Type or an Aston Martin Vantage. Please tell us! 😊

CockingASnook · 04/06/2022 16:56

I’ll add that it’s essential to do really careful research. Go on the owners’ forums and ask what the common issues are. Sometimes specific engines have known faults and will kill the value of the car longer term. Personally I wouldn’t touch a British sports car (TVR, Jaguar, Astons) as there’s greater potential for it to be a money pit and they’re just not as reliable as Porsche or perhaps BMW. But there are definitely decent ones out there. Get it properly inspected by a mechanic.
