To buy a sportscar?

SomersetDreams · 04/06/2022 06:22

In these tough times, is it ok to buy a sportscar. I was never a fan of cars/ particularly materialistic but one has caught my eye and it would be for a special occasion/ in honor of a family member (- trying to find reasons to justify purchase :) )

Its also an investment ...

Would you spend on this? (it was love at first sight!!)

Do it, even if it's for only a year. It's so much fun!

Surelyitscoffeetime · 04/06/2022 08:04

Do it! I’m intrigued now as to what the car is?

nearlyspringyay · 04/06/2022 08:07

Honaloulou · 04/06/2022 06:42

No, I don't have a car. And I really think that buying one specifically that uses more resources than needed is selfish.

🤣🤣

billysboy · 04/06/2022 08:09

My word theres some life suckers on here !

Buy it OP and enjoy it without feeling any guilt , so many upsides if it makes you happy that outweigh all the naysayers and environmentalists

I bought my OH a Merc SLK 350 for a birthday this year and the reaction has been brilliant from everyone same mpg as our boring car but runs on petrol so is cheaper , but I didnt buy it for its fuel economy

I paid £4.5k for it with a low mileage

Its been a shitty couple of years so why not

TuxedoJunction · 04/06/2022 08:09

We had a sports car for a couple of years. It was great fun and something we don’t regret doing. Every drive felt like an event. It’s now out of our system, and not a purchase I think we would do again given the economic/environmental climate we currently find ourselves in

However if you do proceed to get one, you will need deep pockets. The servicing of these high performance cars can be eye wateringly expensive, plus they need to be fed Super-unleaded petrol. The main thing we found with this kind of car is they need to be garaged when not in use I.e - kept dry and not exposed to the elements. The wet especially seems to encourage eroding of the bodywork (which obviously increases the servicing cost.)

Ratonastick · 04/06/2022 08:18

I have a sports car. Not a crazy one, but a slightly unusual one and one that would be considered a bit of a “bloke’s car”. It makes me smile every time I see it on the drive and makes me grin every time I start the engine. I probably won’t buy another one, but it was something I always wanted. I was a bit twitchy about the environmental impact so I bought carbon offsets via Climate Positive.

The value has held up ok (ie currently at 60% of original price at 5 years old), servicing and tyres are not too bad, fuel is getting eye watering but that’s true for everyone. I do about 10,000 miles per year so it’s ok. Parking can be an arse and will probably be the end of it for me. And I treasure the looks I get as a middle aged woman in my sporty jalopy.

i would say it has been utterly frivolous and worth every single penny!

Can you find an 'investment in you' which doesn't fuck the environment for everyone else?

Oh give over, I'm so sick of the joy suckers on here
I have a sports car with a massive engine
It's a beaut & I love it
Buy it and enjoy every minute

SomersetDreams · 04/06/2022 08:23

I hope you don’t have any children.

Eddiesferret · 04/06/2022 08:26

I did this last year. After 30 years of practical cars that have suited family life - and after I had taught all kids to drive so cannot be bugged for lifts .. I have purchased my 'mid life crisis' . It makes me happy everyday. I love it. Never been interested in cars before. Not particularly interested in them now. Except this one.

Do not hesitate OP . If you love driving as I do - it is just amazing to drive something you love.

SomersetDreams · 04/06/2022 08:26

Its also bit of a blokes car but hey girl power.
It is a thing of beauty and i never thought i'd be interested in the engineering and technical stuff.

I also thought of maybe letting key workers use it at some point as a treat and thank you but not sure how that would work with insurance etc

Go for it. I had the option back in 2020 and bought the sensible hatchback instead, which to be fair is useful for the trips to the dump, b&q and picking dd up from university but I see that model (was same price as my car) and think I want a fun car! We only live once

Do you have children? Because people are much worse in terms of emissions than anything else.

NeededAction · 04/06/2022 08:31

Bahahaha.

i was gonna say OP, I have no kids and no car - have my “lack of environmental destruction” for your sports car!!

Schwarz · 04/06/2022 08:32

Do it!!

I I have a "blokey" car, but when she starts up the sound of the engine makes me smile every time. I also always look back once I've parked because I just love it so much 😂 it's not very economical (3L petrol, 23mpg on a good day) but it brings me so much joy. Life is too short not to do what makes you happy!

MissDollyMix · 04/06/2022 08:33

Go for it OP! I hope it gives you many years of happiness. I used to have a sports car pre dc. I loved it. It had beautiful leather seats and the handling was just sublime. Now I have the worlds most boring, practical family car and it makes me feel sad every time I get in it.

HowIsItMarchAlready · 04/06/2022 08:33

Pricklesinperil · 04/06/2022 07:37

You love it, you can afford it, it will bring you joy - buy it OP and have a fantastic time!

THIS!

billysboy · 04/06/2022 08:37

I think we are all behind you OP but intrigued as to your choice of sports car

Good luck to you

CockingASnook · 04/06/2022 08:38

I did exactly this last year with what is fairly desirable model of car. Life is too short and uncertain so I scratched that itch. I love it and it has gone up in value by about 10% so it’s effectively free motoring (to be fair, many secondhand cars have gone up in value). It’s a very reliable model, has got long service intervals but tyres cost a fortune. If it’s a Porsche, do it. If it’s Italian, probably best not to!

Stickytreacle · 04/06/2022 08:38

Buy it and enjoy! Everyone has an environmental Impact, but the effect of a car vs having children, air travel etc etc will be minimal, I couldn't get het up about it when there are coal burning countries spewing out fumes. Have fun!

RainbowToes · 04/06/2022 08:41

Buy the car....go have loads of adventures in it!!
You'll love it.

SomersetDreams · 04/06/2022 08:43

No kids.
I planted loads of trees and did lots of conservation work so I guess I have 'contributed'.
