Nursing should be re-named?

Was pondering over this recently, is calling “nursing” is a bit old fashioned? You now need a degree to be a nurse, and they often are pretty much doing junior doctor jobs. Calling it something else that recognises it’s academic demands, and also more inclusive to males wanting to work in the field…something like Healthcare Medic / Healthcare Practitioner/ Assistant Medic…. Or similar, you get the idea….

-YABU, it should be kept “nurse”, it’s traditional and has roots in “nursing an infant” ie breastfeeding (that reflects the caring nature)

-YANBU it’s old fashioned, insulting to people with degrees and esp males.

I’m very proud to be a Nurse! I have a degree and definitely don’t find the term “nursing” offensive, I also work with nurses who happen to be male too and none of them are offended by the title as far I’m aware. If anything, the title “Nurse” needs to be protected!

@Topgub wow, your last comment really is horrid. I hope the nurses I work with have never looked down on me like you seem to on FY1s.

Yeah I think this poster might be sour. My guess is fed up of years of nursing and seeing many cohorts of young junior doctors come through and progress.

countbackfromten · 02/06/2022 18:27

@holid the really sad thing is that it doesn’t reflect the overwhelming positive interactions I have had over many years, different wards and different hospitals. There are burnt out people and bad apples in all roles but I still think the good far outweighs the bad. I couldn’t do what the nurses do and I take my hat off to them. But it is about respect and working together!

Topgub · 02/06/2022 18:27

@Notallangels

Interesting you think not fawning over Dr's is disrespectful and bullying.

Nurses are also highly skilled and extensively trained with a wealth of knowledge and experience.

For every annoying nurse who you think is bleeping unnecessarily there is an fy1 who doesn't have a clue and can't be trusted to make the right decision.

Bagadverts · 02/06/2022 18:27

I’d settle for the staff who help patients get clean, feed and take them to the toilet being properly acknowledged as vital. When I’ve been a patient sometimes everyone seems so busy treating that really basic stuff gets left behind.

Testina · 02/06/2022 17:55

Insulting to males?
The very fuck?!!!
Care to come back and explain that one?

Absolutely!!

countbackfromten · 02/06/2022 18:30

@Topgub I haven’t seen anyone write that and given my mum was a nurse I would challenge anyone who did. I love working with all members of the team and respect the different roles. But you do seem to be particularly down on poor FY1s and attitudes like that can make it such a miserable experience instead of a positive start to the career they are working in.

Saying there are FY1s who "don't have a clue and can't be trusted" is exactly the disrespect I'm talking about.

Miles away from requiring nurses to "fawn" over doctors.

The attitudes expressed by some nurses on this thread are unsurprising but saddening. Those of us who've worked in the NHS have met these nurses many times.

Doctors diagnose the patient's condition and create the treatment plan. It is a leadership role. If some nurses can't handle following that plan and accepting leadership, they should consider going to medical school.

GoodVibesHere · 02/06/2022 18:14

I kind of know what you mean OP. The term nurse conjures up an old-fashioned image of women tucking in bedsheets. Nursing has moved on so much and has morphed into something so much more than it used to be.

Nursing has moved on, but the job title doesn't need to change. Lots of jobs evolve, but the job title remains the same. What needs to change is the public perception of nurses as people who wipe bums and make beds.

Topgub · 02/06/2022 18:32

@holid

I'm not sour. Or fed up.

What an odd thing to say.

I just dont hero worship doctors

Nursing is a separate role to being a doctor.

Do I think nursing has more if an impact on overall pt care than doctors do?

Yeah, I do.

They spend more time and provide more hands on care than any other speciality.

I dont think nurses do the same role as doctors but I do think they are under appreciated in terms of skill and knowledge

Your instant dismissal of the nursing role said a lot

So maybe you should look at your own posts before calling someone else sour

Georgyporky · 02/06/2022 18:32

Slightly OT, but what is a male Sister called?

oakleaffy · 02/06/2022 18:32

What the actual Fuck?!!!

Steelesauce · 02/06/2022 18:33

holid · 02/06/2022 18:18

I mean we'll have to agree to disagree.

Although I'm curious as to what conditions staff nurses (the majority of nurses) are diagnosing and treating?

Well I'm a nurse in a nursing home and regularly email the GP and say 'they have this and I need you to prescribe this for it' which they just do happily. So I'd say I diagnose and treat regularly. This is because we have a good working relationship with the Gp and they trust our experience and knowledge. Nurses and doctors are very different but should work in harmony, not against each other!

Georgyporky · 02/06/2022 18:32

Charge Nurse

To be honest we have done away with the title Sister

Perplexed0522 · 02/06/2022 18:36

On the ward I work, our F1’s need a lot of support and guidance when they come in to our ward as part of their rotation, but we don’t expect anything different.

They’re new to the staff, the ward, the illnesses, the treatments etc, of course they need help to settle in.

We do things for them if they struggle to do it themselves and answer their many questions etc but we are a team and we work together.

So yes, although they do rely on us heavily at the start of their rotation (we generally have to tell them what we want and what we need them to do) we enjoy seeing them blossom as time passes.

It’s just human decency to help each other out regardless of job role or status.

It’s all about the team work.

Topgub · 02/06/2022 18:36

@Notallangels

Ah.

No.

I'm not led by doctors in any way. I'm an autonomous practitioner in my own right

Our team works collaboratively and we create treatment plans as an mdt in a holistic manner.

I think you're a few decades out of date with your approach.

Saying there are FY1s who "don't have a clue and can't be trusted" is exactly the disrespect I'm talking about.

🤷‍♀️

its true. * *just like there are some awful nurses.

Pretending no doctor was ever shit is daft

Pottedpalm · 02/06/2022 18:37

SaskiaRembrandt · 02/06/2022 18:00

Every nurse I've ever met would strongly disagree. They became nurses because they wanted to nurse. They don't need a makeover.

Sadly not all. I have encountered some truly dedicated nurses but also witnessed some lack
of care which was shocking. Elderly people left ringing bells for far too long and spoken to dismissively. Not much ‘nursing’ going on.

PrawnToast5 · 02/06/2022 18:38

they often are pretty much doing junior doctor jobs.

Quick! Recant this before the FY1s get here 😂

I really don't believe you're working in a hospital where treatment plans are part of a collaboration between nurses/physios etc without any consultant oversight or doctor decision making.

This isn't funny and needs to be stamped out.

Topgub · 02/06/2022 18:39

@countbackfromten

As I said, not down on them. Just realistic.

Anyway it was the instant omg don't dare say nurses are anything like doctors!! That got my back up.

anditgoesonandon · 02/06/2022 18:40

I never made a connection between nursing an infant and nursing the profession, most likely because the common term to use these days is breast feeding. I don't see any reason to rename a profession that has been known by this name for generations.

Toddlerteaplease · 02/06/2022 18:40

I'm a nurse and proud to be one. Though I think when I say children's nurse, people think imma nursery nurse.

Topgub · 02/06/2022 18:40

@PrawnToast5

Too late!!

🤣
