To be fed up of rich people/celebs and private jets

LivesinLondon2000 · 02/06/2022 08:44

Just read this morning that Harry & Meghan arrived in the UK on the Queen’s private jet. Why can’t they travel on a normal scheduled flight? It’s not like they’d have been wedged into economy class with a toddler on their laps like the rest of us anyway!

I’m just fed up of reading about the rich & famous gallivanting around the planet in their jets (the Beckhams are another example) when the rest of us are made to feel guilty about climate change and our carbon footprint by taking any flights at all - even when it’s one short haul EasyJet/Ryanair return flight a year and we’re packed into economy like sardines. Why one rule for them and another for us?

OP posts:

Yanbu the rich/elite are a true cancer on the planet.

Far too many people think it is acceptable that a literal handful of people have been able to amass inconceivable wealth to the detrimental of everyone else. While many more are too scared to rock the boat because they have been duped into believing that they too could one day be rich if they just work hard enough.

The sooner capitalism collapses the better imo. Fuck the elite.

How's the weather in the sixth form common room today 😂

WhatsHoppening · 02/06/2022 14:00

I know what you mean OP. It’s not just them- it’s the Kardashian’s flying 15 minutes instead of a 45 minute car ride, it’s all the posters here saying ‘it’s too hot to hang washing out so my tumblers on’. I can’t think about it too much as it’s upsetting. We are trying our best to minimise our environmental impact white trying to navigate incredibly tight finances (often the eco friendly things are more expensive or higher outlay anyway eg washable sanpro). I’m trying to strike a balance and still feel guilty all the time and then it feels everyone else is cracking on with a wonderful lifestyle and not a care in the world. When I walk through our town with all the plastic bunting it’s sweet and I want people to enjoy themselves but that will all just be binned come monday. Hate it.

DdraigGoch · 02/06/2022 14:00

Thedogshouses · 02/06/2022 13:56

And that doesn't make me a hypocrite because I don't care about the environment one jot

Well at least you're honest about your contempt for the rest of the world, I suppose.

I'll stick with taking the train abroad.

Just stop worrying about it. Your sacrifices don't actually do anything at all whatsoever. If you eat meat, even me with my gas guzzler and tumble drier and monthly flights probably am greener than you because I don't eat any meat or dairy and grow most of my own stuff, the rest I get from local produce because its too hot in summer here. I also adopted so didn't add to the burden of population but even so, I don't care. Its not like its going to be an issue for me at 47.

EmeraldShamrock1 · 02/06/2022 14:06

They would have been hounded by photographers travelling publicly.

As for celebrities travelling in private jets blame society for the ridiculous amount of money they make, besides most celebrities who can afford private planes are usually charity supporters and give generously.

WhatsHoppening · 02/06/2022 14:08

@Thedogshouses even if it’s not an issue for you/us surely it is for our children? And future generations even if they’ve not our family? Having a ‘I don’t give a shit not my problem’ attitude is half the problem.

IcedPurple · 02/06/2022 14:29

They would have been hounded by photographers travelling publicly.

If by 'travelling publicly' you mean taking a 1st class flight, possibly using the VIP terminal in LA and being escorted from the plane on arrival in London, then no, they wouldn't.

People much more famous than them travel 'publicly' from LA to London all the time. I'd imagine staff on that route are quite used to celebrity passengers.

I wonder what score their journey got on Travalyst's rating scheme?

Barbadossunset · 02/06/2022 14:38

Personally I do think there should be laws governing private jets. It shouldn’t just be about whether you’re wealthy enough - it should be based on necessity

op can you give some examples of what counts as necessity?
I don’t see why world leaders particularly need to travel by private jet - what’s ŵrong with commercial airlines?

OvaryActions · 02/06/2022 14:41

TaranThePigKeeper · 02/06/2022 09:38

I would suggest that you step away from the Mail and its ilk, stop allowing yourself to be manipulated into irrational hatred for people you don’t know and will never meet, and go and enjoy your long weekend doing something which will make you happy.

Asking why people whose security is at risk don’t travel on public transport makes you sounds foolish and weird. Honestly, stop thinking about this stuff and your life will be so much more fulfilling.

"Asking why people whose security is at risk don’t travel on public transport makes you sounds foolish and weird. Honestly, stop thinking about this stuff and your life will be so much more fulfilling."

I disagree, we don't need to be encouraging people to be even more apathetic.
If OP and others are sick of the disparity and double standards then put those feelings to good use. Keep talking about this privileged family and put your voice behind getting rid of this out-dated monarchy. The more people talking about it, more momentum, more chance of at least a referendum and hopefully abolishing the monarchy.

Im sure they'll still be able to travel however they please mind you with their vast wealth 😅

Agrudge · 02/06/2022 14:53

Meh. If I had the cash I'd fly private . Cant stand people

OvaryActions · 02/06/2022 15:00

@Mally100
"There is a big difference but you are still contributing to the problem. Unless you never, ever fly and walk everywhere then it just hypocrisy."

How is it hypocrisy for OP to want wealthy privileged people to stop lecturing others on climate change?

If wealth was redistributed, then at some point in the future would it not that a similar situation would happens ? Based on some save, some.spend, and some invest,
as for capitalism itself, what's the next best alternative ?

Forinara · 02/06/2022 15:59

There is not going to be any wealth redistribution though. People seem to have no idea of the extent to which the wealth is protected. It is protected in a way which would defy national revolutions as well as international revolutions happening all at once. They may lose their titles but you would never, ever get a penny of the wealth.

JaneJeffer · 02/06/2022 16:03

Play this at top volume and you'll feel better

DdraigGoch · 02/06/2022 16:07

besides most celebrities who can afford private planes are usually charity supporters and give generously.
So did Edward Colston. Presumably once we wake up to the damage that these private jets do to the planet, we'll be dumping statues of the Kardashians in the docks.

starlingdarling · 02/06/2022 16:14

I have no issue with your average celebrity or rich person using a private jet. It does annoy me if they also happen to be the type to lecture about climate change. Like the ones who showed up in Italy for Google Camp... in their private jets and super yachts Hmm

Daftasabroom · 02/06/2022 16:20

@DdraigGoch the entire aviation sector accounts for just 2.1% of global CO2e. Blaming the very very small fraction of private charter flights (and yes, let's gets the terminology right) is totally deflecting from some of the really big issues we face.

And to other posters: long haul emmisions ppm are lower than short haul.

Pedallleur · 02/06/2022 16:29

It wasn't the Queens plant. It will be either hired or be one the RAFs Queens flight so taxpayer funded. Dont think HM is worried about the climate

Pedallleur · 02/06/2022 16:29

Queens plane

This ^^ puts it into perspective- no one moans about cruise liners emitting god know how much CO2 or the ravaging of the rainforests and Amazon, or how much China, Russia or the USA contribute. It’s always celebrities and their travel 🙄
I bet that if anyone on here was living that sort of lifestyle they wouldn’t hesitate to do the same.

Considering that only a small proportion of the world's population fly regularly, if at all, 2% sounds quite high to me.

And the even tinier proportion who choose to fly privately, especially transatlantic, are responsible for a massively disproportionate amount of carbon emissions.

Probably their head of 6th form. Only a kid could write something like this in earnest. I don't want to share my wealth. Why should I? If I earn more than a person on benefits its partly luck and mainly qualifications and ladder climbing and dedication to my career above all else. So why do I have to subsidise other people. I have healthcare and would never use the NHS, I have enough to see me through till the end of my life easily. There's a reason I left the UK and its angry jealous little people like that who put us off returning and paying tax. I certainly don't want to subsidise someone so full of hate and bile who presumably doesn't have any money.

Confrontayshunme · 02/06/2022 08:50

His mum was essentially murdered by people wanting to get photos of her to sell. I am as green as they come, but even I can see why he wouldn't want to be stuck in first class with two small children unable to leave or get away from crazies. I mean, the daily fail buys photos of Prince George riding his bike while walking the dog. Can you imagine what they would pay for photos of Lilibet?!

Erm no, his mother was killed because she chose not to wear a seat belt.

Teflon syndrome.

Giraffesandbottoms · 02/06/2022 17:52

I have flown with a member of a foreign royal family before. From Heathrow. On a normal airline (was Virgin). You go to “The Windsor Suite” which is a private room in a private part of the airport (there’s a couple of different ones). You arrive by car. You go through a private security (the royal family member doesn’t) and then you are taken separately to the plane. You get on when everyone is already on and go to your place in first class. You then leave the airport before everyone else.

there is no reason whatsoever that members of the royal family are not able to do this, any of them. But yes, if they are going to charter jets they need to shut up about it.
