To be fed up of rich people/celebs and private jets

LivesinLondon2000 · 02/06/2022 08:44

Just read this morning that Harry & Meghan arrived in the UK on the Queen’s private jet. Why can’t they travel on a normal scheduled flight? It’s not like they’d have been wedged into economy class with a toddler on their laps like the rest of us anyway!

I’m just fed up of reading about the rich & famous gallivanting around the planet in their jets (the Beckhams are another example) when the rest of us are made to feel guilty about climate change and our carbon footprint by taking any flights at all - even when it’s one short haul EasyJet/Ryanair return flight a year and we’re packed into economy like sardines. Why one rule for them and another for us?

The Queen doesn't have a private jet, they've used their own. It's only quite recently that one has been available for ministers, otherwise aircraft just get chartered from BA. It's increasingly common for Royals to undertake tours using scheduled flights now though.

But yes it does feel a bit futile to cycle to work when the likes of Abramovich generate more pollution in a year than I will in my entire lifetime.

@TaranThePigKeeper
A couple of friends of mine are part of campaigning groups. Interestingly, they are constantly accused of being preachy and one of the main things people say to them is ‘why should I bother stopping my annual flight when celebrity x, y or z (insert name - doesn’t have to be H&M!) travels by private jet everywhere?’

The more people who join those groups, the greater the groundswell will be, and the sooner you’ll get what you say you want. So join them! And then you’ll be able to preach from the moral high ground. It’s how we made drinking and driving unacceptable.

People are way too interested in and influenced by what ‘celebrities’ do, and we can only change that by killing off the outlets which deliver gossip and tripe to people’s phones, by not engaging with it. I wouldn’t take advice on how to live my life from anyone who just happens to be in the public eye. It’s a bit embarrassing that so many would. I think not posting vitriol on Internet forums would be a good start.

And don’t forget that some jobs require international travel, so you won’t cut out air travel completely. And other people need to travel by air to see their families. You wouldn’t want to stop them from doing that, would you?

I think all private jets should be banned unless there are extremely special circumstances

Is it just private jets you want banned, or any private plane such as, for example, a 4 seater propeller plane?
What would the special circumstances be?

rnsaslkih · 02/06/2022 11:15

I don’t mind them taking private jets. Perhaps they feel that they would be watched and photographed on a normal airplane. But having taken the jets, I do NOT want to hear them preach about climate change.

Similarly if they are going to live in a 14 million dollar mansion, crack on, it’s a free country but I do not want to hear them preach about inequality.

TarasHarp55 · 02/06/2022 11:16

The ops talking about rich people in general, she only mentioned H&M because she'd just seen them. Stop with the paranoia thinking everyone's out to have a go at them. Even if she was so what, they make themselves targets for criticism by their actions, Harry in particular.

SoggyPaper · 02/06/2022 11:17

If I could afford to travel by private jet, rather than do the whole standard airport and scheduled flight thing, I totally would. Honestly, it would make the whole thing so much less dreadful. Especially with a toddler involved.

No danger of that happening though. Or much flying anywhere really Or driving (because I don’t have a car either).

And no moralising at people about the environmental impact of their choices either. That’s really the annoying bit.

Barbadossunset · 02/06/2022 11:18

I’m 50 and I’ve only flown four times in my life, because it makes me so sick

Taran - do you mean it makes you sick in that you are sick of the environment damage done by planes, or sick as in ill?

LivesinLondon2000 · 02/06/2022 11:21

@TaranThePigKeeper
Yes agree that joining a campaigning group is generally a good idea but you need to be fairly thick skinned. And maybe one that aims to stop reporting what celebrities get up to might be more effective!

I certainly don’t want to stop air travel completely. My family live overseas. My DH is English though and we live in London. I don’t see my family often but yes I need to fly if I want to do that. In fact I’ve been told on more than one occasion that I was selfish to marry someone from the UK knowing that it would mean my needing to fly home to see my family and that I should have stayed in my home country if I cared about the environment!
So I am definitely not as preachy as many and I apologise if I came across that way.

I dont know whats more sickening, harry going on about green issues then flying on his grans private jet or the multitude of mnetters pleading the case for him.

Sick as in ill. But I am glad that it means I am contributing much less to climate change. I also work permanently from home so I drive very little except for site visits.

Mally100 · 02/06/2022 10:43

As PP say, your 'necessary' two chickens look like two houses to someone else

Quite. Op, your short haul economy flights make you no better than those private flying people. You are still part of the problem and hypocritical.

To say that someone going on a short haul economy flight with a couple of hundred other people is as bad as one couple, their children and staff travelling on a long haul flight is ridiculous.

Every single person in the world is part of the problem of global warming, except those who live in such appalling condition that they have nothing. It's a matter of degree.

I haven't flown for years, not because of global warming but because I've had not reason to. But I drive a car and there's generally only me in it, although I very rarely make long journeys.

I'm worse than the non car owner who walks or takes the bus, but not if they fly a couple of times a year.

I think it's unrealistic to hope that people like members of the royal family might travel on commercial flights and probably not practical from a security aspect.

However, it would be less annoying to see them make 3000 mile journeys with a plane all to themselves if they didn't have the temerity to lecture the rest of us on global warming.

LakeTiticaca · 02/06/2022 11:23

I think it more about the likes of Meghan and Hazza lecturing others on climate change than actually flying on a private jet. If I had millions I would do the same, wouldn't we all?
People moan about the rich/celebs etc living in posh houses and driving posh cars but ask yourself the question: If you were born into money or made a lot of money, would you give it all up and live on a smacked estate in a shitty flat?
Would you hell!!

PineappleMandarin · 02/06/2022 11:24

I take your point but could you imagine them just sitting there in the departure lounge? It wouldn’t really work would it.

balalake · 02/06/2022 11:24

This seems like a Duke and Duchess of Sussex bashing thread.

I'd sooner be criticising government ministers for trips which are largely PR exercises, than a journey for a one-off event for the Royal Family.

LovelyYellowLabrador · 02/06/2022 11:26

Saw some graffiti theta read the real enemy travels via private jet not dinghy !
and I thought how true

also with the people that travel by private jet
dont you dare lecture us about carbon footprint yes I’m looking at you Harry and Megan !!
thats the reason people don’t like them not because they are racist !!!

They are not nearly as interesting to the paparazzi as they want others to believe. It's a standard rung on the crazy ladder of LA celebrity - need a jet, need ten bodyguards, need five nannies.
It explains the hiring of top tier bodyguards who previously protected presidents, the house with a million bathrooms and all the other distasteful 'image inflation'. Anyway, I don't want to start a new battle with "the Mansion Family" who will robotically leap to defend them regardless of the validity of the criticism.

sst1234 · 02/06/2022 11:34

Wonder when the next lecture from Harry and Meghan will be on the perils of climate change.

LivesinLondon2000 · 02/06/2022 11:34

@PineappleMandarin
No I don’t think they’d be in the departure lounge queuing to use the loo or waiting for a coffee at Pret 😂
But they could be in the VIP lounge and go through the special security area for VIP passengers. Airports seem pretty secure to me but I’m far from an expert on security arrangements - maybe it’s not sufficient for them.

There are a number of lesser celebrities in LA who have managed to genuinely build great wealth out of seemingly thin air. It is like a corruption of the Law Of Attraction. If you have a small amount of wealth to initially invest in image inflation and getting yourself seen alongside genuinely successful people non stop. If you succeed then you will eventually be regarded similarly and become absorbed into the $$$ club. There are bestselling self-help type books available about it. What works against them is their previous reputations and her age.

Maybe not, for lots of reasons. But crack on making your not so sly digs. You are fooling no one.

It always amazes me too. The millionaire couple living in a multi million dollar mansion must be in a clear need of defending, the poor loves.

It wouldn't happen. Airports have private lounges for VIPs/Royalty etc.

It's well known that the Queen used to fly on Concorde. She didn't wait in the same departure lounge as other passengers and entered/exited the airports via VIP doors/areas.

"Slebs" also get lots of freebies and that's been the case for decades! I remember watching a documentary about one of the London "posh" hotels in the 1920s who put on "free" parties to the "luvvies" of the day, basically for the publicity and marketing opportunities of attracting even more "luvvies" into their hotel in the hope that some would actually pay for rooms/meals/drinks on future occasions. Of course the modern alternative is firms sending goods to social media "influencers" or cruise firms offering their best suites to slebs as a freebie for the publicity shots etc!

AltaNova · 02/06/2022 11:57

They arrived on a private jet from Santa Barbara to Farnborough - definitely not the Queens private jet. The same private jet Meghan took to Texas a week ago.

LuluBlakey1 · 02/06/2022 11:57

I am sick of all celebs. Most are talentless, ridiculously over-paid, have little or no taste, and contribute nothing to society. I m sick of hearing about them, seeing their over the top privileged lifestyles when so many hard-working people are struggling.
I loathe the way they are admired, feted, ever action and outfit hung onto and talked about and copied by ordinary people when they are pretty awful really. Katie Price, the big blond woman from TOWIE, Amber Heard, Johnny Depp, film stars, footballers and WAGs (the worst), reality tv performers . I hate all of it.
Some of them, including the above, are absolute deadlosses, can't get another paid job and are thicker than mince- Loose Women.
It makes me despair the way people fawn over celebs. I can't understand how people can be interested in any of them and are not embarrassed to be empty-headed.
