To be fed up of rich people/celebs and private jets

Just read this morning that Harry & Meghan arrived in the UK on the Queen’s private jet. Why can’t they travel on a normal scheduled flight? It’s not like they’d have been wedged into economy class with a toddler on their laps like the rest of us anyway!

I’m just fed up of reading about the rich & famous gallivanting around the planet in their jets (the Beckhams are another example) when the rest of us are made to feel guilty about climate change and our carbon footprint by taking any flights at all - even when it’s one short haul EasyJet/Ryanair return flight a year and we’re packed into economy like sardines. Why one rule for them and another for us?

I don’t actually have an issue with celebs, royalty, rich people etc travelling on private jets. It has always been and always will be that some people have more money than others, yes the current distribution of wealth is unfair but I’m not sure there will ever be a way to make it fair. People with money will spend it on luxuries, let’s face it a huge number of us would do the same if we had that sort of cash.

What I have a MAJOR issue with is said celebs / royalty / rich people travelling on private jets and then lecturing the plebs (ie normal people) about climate change (H&M are particularly guilty of this).

I would very happily support a law that banned anyone from talking about climate change concerns if they’ve ever even once benefited from private air travel.

Bouledeneige · 02/06/2022 09:44

Yes its a bit rich given their virtue signalling. It makes you realise that we aren't all in it together, some people are so cosseted and insulated from the lives of others. Like dancing in their huge mansions during Covid telling people to be strong.

But on entirely a different note I've been thinking recently about how during Covid we have all got so dependent on deliveries - from food, to clothing, to make up and toiletries and household items. We are going to have to stop this as its terrible environmentally and for the planet. Not that I'm thinking Harry and Meghan need to rely on their Tesco delivery.... they have staff for that.

JudgeRindersMinder · 02/06/2022 09:46

I can’t find anything online to say that it’s the Queen’s jet. They travelled by private jet, yes, but not one belonging to the Queen <splitting hairs>

What I CAN find is that she sent cars to pick them up at the airport, you know like normal people do

GirlInACountrySong · 02/06/2022 09:47

Can anyone point me in the direction of these 'rules' ?

kickingupdaisies · 02/06/2022 09:48

Hypocrites, go around lecturing on the planet and getting a private jet all the time!

true. like PW and PC telling us how to save the planet.

Yes, it’s astonishing how much less offensive people find this than the Sussexes doing the same thing, isn’t it? I wonder what the difference is 🤔

Puzzledandpissedoff · 02/06/2022 09:56

The Queen doesn't have a private jet; it's a fine point I suppose, but she uses RAF-owned aircraft or leases them from BA

It's true that their style of transport's more damaging than flying commercial, but as ever they'll all go right on doing whatever they can get away with

CathyorClaire · 02/06/2022 09:57

Why can’t they travel on a normal scheduled flight?

Because that would mean mixing with the plebs.

Let's not forget Harry booking out an entire first class train carriage to avoid the horror.

I agree with you, OP. Wagging a petulant finger at the peasants for their annual two weeks in Benidorm while hopping on a private jet every few weeks doesn't sit well and that's before we get on to the 'sustainable travel initiative' which has just been rebooted.

the80sweregreat · 02/06/2022 09:59

Yep, they then have the nerve to moan at us all about climate change. They should just stay quiet.
Hypocrites.

TheKeatingFive · 02/06/2022 10:00

The royals have always flown in private jets while lecturing others on the environment. No one seemed to care too much about that until Meghan did it. 🤔

TheKeatingFive · 02/06/2022 10:02

But yes, they should all be called out for it. The problem is that they don't have much to talk about that's relevant to the modern world, so they've landed on the environment as a 'safe' topic, which works okay so long as everyone ignores the raging hypocrisy.

"But on entirely a different note I've been thinking recently about how during Covid we have all got so dependent on deliveries - from food, to clothing, to make up and toiletries and household items. We are going to have to stop this as its terrible environmentally and for the planet. "

Whilst I would agree it's not good to have a series of vans transporting a small item from an Amazon delivery , surely it's better for one Sainsbury's van to be delivering around several households rather than everyone driving their own cars to the supermarket and back?

Badbadbunny · 02/06/2022 10:06

emuloc · 02/06/2022 09:40

It is still flying though. The mode of transport is still the same. Honestly does anyone really expect them to get on a commercial flight? this is the Queen's jet, that she wishes her grandson, his wife and their children to use. Maybe she in her wisdom, knows what she is doing.

The commercial alternative would be flying anyway and almost certainly there'd have been empty seats up in first class.

By flying private, that's and EXTRA flight that wouldn't have happened otherwise. The private jet would hardly have gone to America and back empty just for fun, would it?

Hence, 2 transatlantic flights of a private jet that was easily avoidable, so extra pollution for no good reason at all. Even worse when H&M preach about climate change! It's the hypocracy!

BattenburgDonkey · 02/06/2022 10:07

It’s not one rule for them, you are allowed to fly on a private jet too, you just can’t afford to or choose not to!

All the royals do this at some point, Megan hasn’t been to this country in a few years so it’s not much worse than people who fly economy several times a year is it. But of course because it’s Harry and Megan and not some other proper royals someone has to have a problem with it. Just stop obsessing about them and get on with your own life. And yes I saw you threw in a couple of other token celeb names, but your problem is obviously Harry and Megan.

Dashel · 02/06/2022 10:08

I think all private jets should be banned unless there are extremely special circumstances. I don’t care if it’s royalty or a singer, the damage to the environment is too great from one or two people using a plane to travel across the globe.

Simonjt · 02/06/2022 10:08

I find prince william worse when talking about the environment while he chose to have three children. People who are incredibly wealthy are often hypocrits.

I can see however for some people there is a safety and privacy issue on chartered planes, just as there would be by using first class on the train.

I have travelled on private jet once, I can see why people like it, it really is very very nice.

But do those households stay in all day on delivery day, thus not using fuel and no vehicle emissions from their parked up car?

Or do they go out anyway, maybe drive right past Sainsbury on their way to/from an out of town retail park, or cinema, or to visit relatives, or whatever., where they could have simply stopped off to do their shopping on the way back?

Puzzledandpissedoff · 02/06/2022 10:09

Spot on - but I can't agree that "nobody" cared until Meghan did it; some of us were highlighting the hypocrisy long before she even came on the scene

Kendodd · 02/06/2022 10:09

I agree. Especially if they bleat on about climate change.

twilightcafe · 02/06/2022 10:10

YABU
I have no desire to be a terrorism target, therefore I would not want to be on the same commercial flight as H&M.

Kendodd · 02/06/2022 10:11

Confrontayshunme · 02/06/2022 08:50

His mum was essentially murdered by people wanting to get photos of her to sell. I am as green as they come, but even I can see why he wouldn't want to be stuck in first class with two small children unable to leave or get away from crazies. I mean, the daily fail buys photos of Prince George riding his bike while walking the dog. Can you imagine what they would pay for photos of Lilibet?!

This poster has a point though.

I suspect someone living in a third world country who doesn’t have access to a car or public transport thinks the same about you “galavanting” around in your comfortable car or bus, etc. I doubt they’re posting bitter posts on the internet about it though. It’s not a race to the bottom.

Exactly!

Ok, But they are not the only people who have done this. The Op seems to have a problem with them though.
