To be shocked by the leavers jumpers

Itsmytreehouse · 01/06/2022 14:48

My dd is leaving primary school this July and we have been sent a link to order leaver jumpers.
The design has their school name and year on the front in large letters and on the back their teachers name and class mates names (including surname) with hand written messages of good luck printed all over.
I might be over reacting but I’m seeing it as a safeguarding concern that these kids will be wearing them around showing their name and school in public. (They’ve been asked to wear them to school for all next term as part of their leavers production outfit)
Should I point this out to the school or forget about it?

Blimey! If this worries you, how do you function in life?
forget it. Move on

Symingtons · 03/06/2022 08:32

What if a parent chooses not to buy this? (Because they can't afford it, or simply don't like it). I'm not sure I would have when my children were 10/11 years old!

Ifeelsuchafool · 03/06/2022 12:21

No, no, no to full names. Ours actually only had their school nicknames on them not even their full real first names. Not necessary and a huge safeguarding issue. If they'd had their real names on them mine wouldn't have had one. Simple.

PeachyPeachTrees · 03/06/2022 17:40

Should just be first names.

Why is advertising nicknames such a good idea, if you are the sort who thinks a child’s real name is dangerous to advertise in any way?

TigerLilyTail · 04/06/2022 00:06

if a creepy guy is on the bus behind a 12-year-old girl who he thinks is really pretty and he overhears a friend call her Hanaleigh. He thinks that’s an unusual name and notices there’s a Hanaleigh Watkinson on her hoodie and she goes to Truman Primary School. So he googles Truman primary School and sees it’s in Whittington Town and he finds a listing for Watkinson living in Whittington Town at 65 Edgeware Drive, so basically within a few minutes he knows this girls full name, what school she goes to and where she lives. I suppose that isn’t creepy at all.

Having nicknames on I would think was even riskier as knowing a child’s nickname will often make them think they must be known to someone so they are more likely to go with someone who says “hi flash” to them. It suggests familiarity

Making known the name of the child wearing the jumper isn't the main issue though (for the age group the OP is discussing). The issue is that a jumper with full names and school name discloses where all those children go to school. This is a huge safeguarding concern for a small minority of children.

Anyway, as discussed previously on this thread, whether each of us is personally happy with their child's full name being on a jumper also isn't the issue. Would I be concerned with my own child's full name being on a jumper - no. Would I be concerned if my child's school put full names on a jumper without parental/guardian consent? - massively It suggests the school are oblivious to safeguarding issues and GDPR and it would make me wonder what the hell else they are doing.

We’ve done leaver’s hoodies for years. This time is the first year a parent has made a fuss and now we’re only allowed first names.

Don’t be that parent.

Do be that parent...this is primary school not year 11.

By that argument, nobody should ever wear a school uniform, as that provides identifiable information as well.

Some children don’t wear identifiable uniform outside.

My school tie lived on my desk. When they brought in jumpers it was drummed into me jumper had to either be under a zipped jacket or in my bag.

And, as has been said several times, it’s not just the risk of that child being seen. The chances of my father spotting me on the short journey to and from school were small. The chance of him spotting my name on my hoodie would have been small. The chance of him, or a family member, spotting my name on one of thirty hoodies dotted around the town and villages locally would have been considerably higher.

Its an absolutely unnecessary risk.

Porcupineintherough · 06/06/2022 07:58

@JustLyra if he knew your name already then reading it on the hoody for a school you no longer attended wouldn't really have helped very much.

RealBecca · 06/06/2022 08:10

Surely they need parental consent? I wouldn't give consent for my childs full name and picture to be printed on a jumper. School are accountable. PTAs do their best but school shouldn't be giving over full names without consent.

Well it would have massively narrowed down the area for his search, and the hoodies in the OP will be worn for the rest of the year. And many posters have stated that their schools (and multiple schools I worked in) do the hoodies early in the year so the kids wear them.

Foggydayz · 06/06/2022 14:14

Our school has a large intake
As a parent it takes forever to find your own kids name, even if you really really try. Minuscule print, 100 odd names. Yes - it is odd, to share school name and Kids names, but it doesnt identify which of the 80 odd kids is mine. It is fine! And it is lovely to have this after 2 years of covid

letsnotdothat · 06/06/2022 14:43

Not sure if your DC’s school is the same but at mine you could tick a box to state that you didn’t want your child’s name on the hoodie. I don’t think anyone is going to actually glare enough at the hoodie in public to take down the children’s names on it and hunt them down.

The relevant word here is 'IF.' It sounds an unlikely scenario.
Most children are abducted by either someone already known to them, or by a random stranger, who doesn't know or care what their name is.

It’s highly highly unlikely that a primary school hoodie will have that many names on it
