To think the monarchy is regressive and should be abolished?

The principle of the monarchy, that they are superior people because of the family they were born into/married into is completely regressive and embarrassing for us as a country.

All the hoopla around the jubilee is cringe worthy

Would we get a bank holiday on abolition day plus one each year on republic day?

SleeplessInEngland · 01/06/2022 13:38

The monarchy is utterly riculous but I've softened on its existence recently because if it was absolished we'd have to create a written constitution and I simply don't trust those in power right now to write and vote through good one.

Jeansgoals · 01/06/2022 13:38

Fuck em all.

Hopefully! And we could celebrate British people who have actually achieved more than staying alive for a long time (with the help of servants and superior healthcare than anyone else in Britain)

That is a good point, christ knows what we'd end up with if it happened now...

Imagine Boris in Buckingham Palace.

(Ok not really but he would be elevated to Presidential status wouldn't he and probably have some kind of White House establishment)

IHateWasps · 01/06/2022 13:42

YANBU. It should have been abolished before now.

toastofthetown · 01/06/2022 13:42

The royal family is in a bit of difficult situation existentially, as the reasoning that they are innately more special by virtue of their birth doesn’t really fly any more. But then if they are just as average human beings as everyone else, why do they hold such a powerful and privileged position?

CapMarvel · 01/06/2022 13:43

The idea that the head of state of a country is there purely because their mum shagged their dad is utterly absurd.

The point being that we could vote to get rid of President Boris.

StripeJacket · 01/06/2022 13:47

I don't like the idea of President Cameron/Blair so I think it's best to stick with what we have.

I would prefer them to keep out of politics and lecturing is like hypocrites on the environment, they should cut ribbon, give awards and shake hands with people at times of national crisis, we have politicians we vote in and out thank you.

There's no guarantee that he would be voted out or, indeed, that any replacement would be a decent President. Whoever it is, they will certainly have perceived increased power and status.

But he would have been elected in. We have regular elections to vote in a replacement if we don’t like who is representing us.

With a monarchy it’s a total crapshoot as to who is representing you, and there’s nothing we can do about it if you don’t like them. I think this view is largely because the Queen for most of her reign has been inoffensive. But William and his family often fly together, and Harry doesn’t seem to have any interest in the monarchy so it only takes one plane crash for King Andrew to be next in line to be our representative on the world stage.

You will just be swapping one group of narcisistists for another.

orwellwasright · 01/06/2022 13:51

I'm ambivalent. It's a confusing issue for me. It's certainly regressive and inegalitarian to have a hereditary head of state.

But I'm not sure I'd trust the electorate to vote anyone better in, frankly. And how do you keep it non-political?

I'm definitely getting more republican as I get older. Having a monarchy just endorses the growing social inequality in this country.

StripeJacket · 01/06/2022 13:52

I recently discovered the beauty of the House of Lords, law makers who do not have to fear the mob and being voted back in.

It's not perfect as long as they stick to their jobs I am happy for them to stay. The Royal family have a job it is to stay out of politics and stop being hypocrites over the environment please.

WallaceinAnderland · 01/06/2022 13:54

But he would have been elected in. We have regular elections to vote in a replacement if we don’t like who is representing us.

That's what we've got already and look how that's working out. A Presidency would make little difference. Get rid of the Monarchy by all means, if that is what people want but do it in the full knowledge of what you are replacing it with.

ForestFae · 01/06/2022 13:54

I don’t like it either.

standoctor · 01/06/2022 13:56

I personally do not know any one of any generation who thinks it is embarrassing to have a royal family.
No one says they are superior.
Queen does a great job as an ambassador for the Uk and it makes us different from most of the rest of the world
1000s tourists are attracted to the UK by its history much of which is tied up with royalty.
Go to Windsor Castle Buck Palace Kensington Palace and see how much tourists love it.
What is cringeworthy is people who are full of envy and hate and have no respect for the history of the country they live in and its institutions.
If you do not like it here and you are embarrassed you are free to leave.

ForestFae · 01/06/2022 13:58

You can love the country and the history but not like the idea of the royal family.

IanOsenfrote · 01/06/2022 13:58

I think that after the queen has passed away, the whole thing should be abolished. I can't see any need to replace them with a president or suchlike.

To be fair to the queen, she has not put a foot wrong in 70 years and that is quite an achievement but the monarchy is an outdated concept now IMO.

Tourists come to see the buildings and the history. I bet few have actually seen the queen herself.

MoodyMooToo · 01/06/2022 14:02

You are entitled to your opinion. I would definitely not like to see them abolished. I love the pomp and glory and very proud to say we still have a monarchy.

ClocksGoingBackwards · 01/06/2022 14:02

I like the monarchy, but that doesn’t mean I believe they are superior human beings to me. They’re just in a different position in life to me, just like countless others.

I think having a monarchy gives us more voice, not less in politics. And as I have very little faith in the democracy that brings us war, austerity, the brexit shit show and people with Rishi Sunaks bank balance, I’d rather stick with the system we have.

Mommabear20 · 01/06/2022 14:03

I love the monarchy and the history and so wish to keep it, but I'd majorly reduce the 'senior' royals to the monarch, heir apparent, and the next heir and the next etc. so just the Queen, Charles, William and his kids. The rest should all work for their money and pay for their properties, possessions, and weddings themselves with no input from the tax payers.

CapMarvel · 01/06/2022 14:04

WallaceinAnderland · 01/06/2022 13:47

But he or any other elected could be voted out, or removed via some form of democratic process. In theory anyway.

If Charles turns out to be a shit head of state there is no mechanism for his removal.
