To think the monarchy is regressive and should be abolished?

The principle of the monarchy, that they are superior people because of the family they were born into/married into is completely regressive and embarrassing for us as a country.

All the hoopla around the jubilee is cringe worthy

Anyone who is pro monarchy and celebrating the jubilee is implicitly stating that they think that myself, my partner and our children are a lower class of person, inferior, to a certain special family.

😂This statement is so ridiculous it's funny.

AlternativePerspective · 01/06/2022 14:29

because countries with presidencies are doing so much better….

zimbabwe, Iraq, Russia, the US, to name just a few.

we already voted Johnson in, why would we do differently just because he was president?

When something goes wrong we already look to the government to fix it. We don’t say “what is the queen doing about this?”

So how, other than not having palaces and castles, do people really think that abolishing the monarchy is going to change the country?

WallaceinAnderland · 01/06/2022 14:29

I also think people think they will be better off financially without a Monarchy but all those buildings will still need to be maintained, all those treasures preserved. The existing royal family family cannot just be thrown out and expected to earn a living when they have exceptionally security needs, etc. It could eventually happen but not immediately.

Hundreds of jobs would be lost and any money saved would go to government for them to decide how it is used. Maybe it could pay off a percentage of state debt but materially, nothing will change for the general public except the new Prime Minister/President will step into the position of privilege and wealth.

AlternativePerspective · 01/06/2022 14:32

Imagine how much wallpaper for the palace would cost.

TheNumberfaker · 01/06/2022 14:33

We wouldn’t need to have an executive type President like they do in France/USA, we could have a more ceremonial type like in Ireland/ Germany. I think it would be a good compromise for the Queen to be the last monarch, then Charles to have a fixed term of 5-10 years as ceremonial Head of State whilst a new constitution and all the processes were worked out. Wouldn’t it be amazing to live in a country where Mary Beard, Onjali Rauf, Marcus Rashford or Stacey Solomon could be our Head of State?
The time, money and attention that is wasted on the Royal family is absolutely immoral.

darlingdodo · 01/06/2022 14:36

ChaToilLeam the same applies to quite a few presidents around the world in the 21st century - I don't think Putin, Trump, Bolsonaro, Orban, etc are particularly law abiding, non brutal and honest Grin

AlternativePerspective · 01/06/2022 14:37

What about Alan sugar? Would you want him as head of state?

Or Wayne Rooney?

I mean if you’re opening up to anyone to the be the head of state then you might want to be careful what you wish for.

It’s that kind of thinking that ended up with Donald Trump in power.

What will change is we will have a head of state who is elected and not there simply by the ridiculous method of birthright.

That's it. It's pretty straightforward.

If you are determining head of state by succession the same argument applies. You can get a bad one and unlike with an elected head of state there is no mechanism to get rid of them.

Not all monarchs are polite grannies who go around opening trainlines. In the past they had quite the track record of removing people's heads for looking at them funny.

That's essentially it!

Yes. Fuck them all off in a non-violent way. Except for the pervert - he can roast on a spit in hell. 🔥

I find the view INCREDIBLY disgusting - on a par with trans activists denying women's rights or fascists openly promoting racism.

If, in a world-ending situation, your family plus 100 healthy, fertile 20-something couples and the queen arrived at the nuclear bunker at the same time, who do you think they would let in?

Your lot or a 96 year-old woman who has, at best, 5 more years of life left?

If you ever find yourself in that situation, remember to bring your radiation pills with you, cos it ain't your lot that will be getting to safety.

Florenz · 01/06/2022 14:46

It's quite simple, who makes the better head of State, the Queen, or Boris Johnson. Because if you abolish the Monarchy, you end up with a politician as head of State instead. And Boris Johnson could become President just like he became PM.

MrsTerryPratchett · 01/06/2022 14:46

Go to Windsor Castle Buck Palace Kensington Palace and see how much tourists love it.

Versailles and the Summer Palace in Beijing on the other hand, not a single person visiting. Empty, like a ghost town.

It's regressive and I didn't like them when they weren't involved in trafficking. If you think about it, the Queen is an accident of birth. We could as easily have got Andrew as King. That would have been GREAT for tourism. Of a certain kind I suppose.

Sharrowgirl · 01/06/2022 14:49

I like having a monarchy, thanks. Crowns and palaces and jubilees and gold carriages and state openings of parliament. It adds colour to our national life.

Otherwise it’s just a bunch of grey men in grey suits in grey cars. Dull, dull, dull.

Plus the history. The coronation ceremony hasn’t changed for a thousand years. Living history, right there.

Not everything is about bloody money and abolishing the monarchy won’t make you any richer.

You do realise the Queen won’t live forever? And with the royal family as it is now, King Andrew isn’t unimaginable. Except unlike President Johnson, there’s nothing anyone could do about it.

Sharrowgirl · 01/06/2022 14:51

Not to mention, any power they have is entirely symbolic. They can’t actually do anything or change anything. In fact, they probably have less power than you or me as they can’t vote, can’t protest and can’t express an opinion about anything.

darisdet · 01/06/2022 14:52

Money hasn't been cited as the main motivating factor by most, in wanting to abolish the unelected monarchy, on this thread.

It's a nonsensical comparison.

Just because Liz seems like a decent old lady who doesn't really meddle too much, you probably wouldn't have enjoyed living under say Mary I, what with her habit of executing anyone who didn't fancy being a catholic.

The point is that our head of state should be someone put there following a democratic process, not that we all think Boris should be the sodding president because obviously only idiots would want that.

Fair enough, sweaty overweight men in bathing suits in green Bentleys more your kind of thing.

Jason118 · 01/06/2022 14:55

The monarchy is in the same boat as religion. If neither of them existed and you tried to implement them, people would think you are mad.

Mamamia7962 · 01/06/2022 14:59

I am in my 50s and no one has ever come up to me and said they are embarrassed that this country has a royal family!

JanisMoplin · 01/06/2022 14:59

I think the monarchy is a disgusting institution. Sorry, I won't be leaving the UK. We will see how it does when William comes to the throne and starts preaching to everyone about reducing their carbon footprint.

In the meantime, return the Kohinoor.
