To think the monarchy is regressive and should be abolished?

The principle of the monarchy, that they are superior people because of the family they were born into/married into is completely regressive and embarrassing for us as a country.

All the hoopla around the jubilee is cringe worthy

Standoctor
“Queen does a great job as an ambassador for the Uk and it makes us different from most of the rest of the world”

Not that different - there are twelve sovereign monarchies in Europe alone. That’s before counting any countries in Asia, Africa or the Middle East, many of whom also have the equivalent of royal families. We are neither different nor special.

Imagine how much wallpaper for the palace would cost.

This is brilliant 😂

The argument against the Monarchy makes no sense. Yes a President would be elected but democratic elections gave us Boris Johnson as PM. Yes the Queen has the job by birthright but has done a very good job for over 70 years now. Surely the result matters more than the process?

Maybe in 20 years things will be different, if Charles and/or William turn out to be terrible monarchs and politicians start doing a good job, we can think about abolishing the Monarchy. But in the current climate, with the current bunch of useless politicians, it's a terrible idea.

Wtaf? Where did you get the idea from that UK elections are democratic? Because they don't shove a gun in your face at the polling booth?

Do you not think that continuing to allow these terrible politicians to feather their own nests is an even more terrible idea?

Electoral reform wouldn't be a bad idea, but that's not likely to happen soon.

Why this ridiculous belief that British people can't create a better political system? Everyone just fixated on the post-Boris race to the bottom?

If we could, why haven’t we? It’s beyond belief that anyone would look at the current shitshow produced by “democracy” and think we need more of it.

Florenz · 01/06/2022 16:35

"Do you not think that continuing to allow these terrible politicians to feather their own nests is an even more terrible idea?"
I don't which is why I don't want a president which would be yet another politician.

darisdet · 01/06/2022 16:40

If you want to improve our democratic political system and introduce electoral reform then a hereditary head of state has no place in that, or really shouldn't...

toastofthetown · 01/06/2022 16:47

I genuinely don’t understand the argument that an elected head of state might be dreadful, so better to leave it to be a hereditary position where if they are awful the only thing we can do is wait until they die and hope their children do better.

ElephantsFart · 01/06/2022 16:49

They all need to go when the queen dies.

Charles is a hypocrite regarding the natural environment, supporting young people and farming. See this today as an example:

I like the monarchy, but that doesn’t mean I believe they are superior human beings to me. They’re just in a different position in life to me, just like countless others.

I think having a monarchy gives us more voice, not less in politics. And as I have very little faith in the democracy that brings us war, austerity, the brexit shit show and people with Rishi Sunaks bank balance, I’d rather stick with the system we have.

Erm, all of those horrors have taken place under the system we have...

ElephantsFart · 01/06/2022 16:50

We need electoral reform for sure, but that’s not an argument for keeping hereditary positions in society. We must aim for better.

Where do you get the idea from that the royal family is anything but interested it it’s own well-being? They are more than happy to pressure government to make or stop making changes that suit their own interests. The queen isn’t some benign sweet old lady. She and the people around her are as shrewd and calculating as any politician.

MasterBeth · 01/06/2022 16:51

The monarchy is an appalling anachronism: a family of hereditary rulers whose place in society is owed to the fact that hundreds of years ago, their warlord forebears stole the common land for themselves, told us they were superior to us and still we tug our forelocks to them? It's beyond crazy.

Blossomtoes · 01/06/2022 16:52

Precisely. So what’s the rationale for more elected greedy politicians with their noses in the trough?

I’m a royalist. I’m proud to live in a country that has a constitutional monarchy. Because it shows we are pacifists when it comes to running our country. Every country that doesn’t have a monarchy has a violent and bloody history of revolution and genocide that got them to that point. They are the regressive ones because they killed millions to get their Democratic “Republics” and for what? We have a democracy just like they do. All the same and in some cases better human rights than they do. But we achieved it bloodlessly. Without killing millions of innocents to do it. So the monarchy should stay. It’s a badge of honour on how we have gone from a feudal government with serfs to a democracy with universal suffrage without murder and violence.

Oh my sainted aunt. Your precious monarchy killed and enslaved millions of innocents. Do a bit of reading.

Sathnam Sanghera's "Empire" really should be compulsory reading for every British person. The ignorance on here is amazing, at times.

You think it's to do with how many of them there are? Besides, if having a monarchy supposedly is an antidote to being ruled by 'greedy politicians',how do you explain the current lot?

The solution to the problem that people often vote for arseholes (or to the problem that there are currently not even enough non-arseholes to vote for) is not to pin your hopes on one family of people you can't vote to get rid of, whether they are arseholes or not.

Oh my fucking goodness. Where do I start?

We literally chopped our king's head off to become a republic. We had a fucking civil war.

Are you trolling or are you really this stupid??

Every country has killed millions of innocents outside their country regardless of whether a monarchy or not. I specifically stated in the running of our country as in our own citizens. They matter too.

I wonder if there's ever been a survey of IQ and/or education levels in monarchists and republicans.

So the last civil war. 1642 - 1649. Care to comment on that?

And then we had a restoration because a republic was worse. Jesus, even mince pies were banned.

The biggest indicator now for voting allegiance and stance on issues like this is level of education. And the flag-shaggers don't come out too well...

It was on a far lower scale than the French Terror, the Chinese Cultural Revolution, the Soviet Revolution, the Spanish Revolution, the US Revolution, the Mexican Revolution Etc. In addition, civil wars happen in all countries regardless of government type so they aren’t an especial feature of monarchies.
